The Election. The election is now a
thing of the past ; speculation is no longer
of any avail, we can only deal in facts. The
full vote is not at this time reported, but
enough is already received to fix the re
sult beyond a preadventure. Garfield is el
ected and the country safe.
As had been conceded the Solid South
supported Hancock without a dissenting
State, and in the North the States of Ne
vada and New Jersy and perhaps Califor
nia will also cast their electoral vote for the
Democratic nominee. This, however, gives
the election to Garfield by twenty-nine el
ectoral votes. As yet the report of majori
ties in the different States are not full en
ough to ascetain the popular majority.
Oregon has gone for the Republicans, but
by a smaller majority than was expected.
The reports from Eastern Oregon are very
meager, and in Multnomah county there is
a considerable falling off in the Republican
vote, this is also the case in most parts of
the State. Election day was very stormy
and doubtless many voters remained away
in consequence thereof. The election in
Benton county was as we anticipated, i. e. ,
in favor of the papular candidate, Garfield.
A Murderous Chinaman. On Thurs
day last, says the Silvertou Appeal, Mr.
John E. Woods, foreman on the narrow
guage, and having in charge i pang, dis
charged one of the number, Ah Joe, a pug
ilist. He soon packed up his bundle, in
cluding a tent belonging to Hop Sing, a
diminutive fellow laborer, to which Sing
objected by laying hold of the pack. This
so incensed the burly Ah Joe that he picked
up a club and knocked the other down,
beating him into insensibility ; and had not
Mr. Woods interfered, would have murder
ed his victim outright. After commission
of the drstardly deed, Ah Joe liegan to
mersure ties in the direction of the pcace
sul Santiam. The barbarian crowd stood
mute spectators of the fight, evidently
fearing the savage Ah Joe. The wounded
man lay insensible in his core for three
hours, his comrads refusing to render the
slightest assistance, beyond carrying him to
camp by order of Mr. Woods.
A Sad Accident. While the Republi
can demonstration was in process at Hal
sey on but Tuesday, a sad accident befel
four boys. They were engaged in aiding
in the firing of anvils. One had just
been fired and Clyde McCoy attempted to
recharge it with a can of powder. Some
sparks remained in the anvil, which ignited
the powder and it exploded, severely burn
ing him, Geo. Basset, Brand en, son of
Thos. Branden, and Isaac Blevens. Mc
Coy received the worst injuries, having all
his hair singed. At last accounts they
were all doing well except McCoy, with
whom there was danger of inflamation of
the throat. If that is avoided, he will
shortly be all right.
An Important Decision. The Lafayette
'"Courier" of the 29th inst. says : "Judge
Boise decided, at the term of Circuit Court
in this county just closed, in the case of E.
R. Poppleton vs. F. A. Fletcher et si., that
an agreement in a promissory note providing
for the payment of an attorney fee in case
of suit is institnted to collect the same, is
void and without consideration, and cannot,
therefore, be enforced. This is a very im
portant decision and effects the entire busi
ness community, as nearly all the notes and
mortgages executed within the past few
years contain these agreements. The case
will probably go to the Supreme Court."

Editor Gazette. I wish through your
columns to call the attention of the people
of Corvallis, and especially those in author
ity, to the necessity of taking some meas
ures to prevent that dire disease Diphtheria.
There will be less of inconvenience to the
public, and far less of interruption to the
business of our place, if arrangements are
made to isolate each case as it occurs, pro
viding nurses and needed comforts for the
indigent, than by the neglect of sanitary
and preventative measures to allow its rav
ages to become wide-spread and beyond

Theatre. Frank Cleave gave one of his
popular variety entertainments at Ham
ilton's Opera House last evening to a good
audience. We were not able to be present
during the whole performance, and can
only say that the audience seemed well
pleased. And entirely new change of pro
gramme will be given this evening.
Insanu Mrs. Israel Eddy, of this county
was examined by W. S. McFadden, County
Judge, and Drs. Bayley and Farra, and pro
nounced insane, and taken to the Asylum
at East Portland last Monday.

Miss Lucy Stevens, of Newport, is in the
city.

ually plentiful in the foot hill in this county.
Mrs. Springer of Walla Walla, who has
been visiting in the city for several weeks,
returned last Wednesday.
The cackling of wild geese and the shrill
piping of the crane reminds one that the
gentle Oregon mists are coming on.
Closing out of hardware, crockery, tools

Obershaw, the villain who attempted to
outrage a little ten-year old girl in Portland,
was sentenced to eight years imprisonment

Owing to the fact that the election re
turns were not sufficiently full on Thursday
evening to give a positive statement as to
the result. v e delayed the issue of the
Gazette until Friday evening instead of
Friday morning as usual.
W. P. Keady, ex-state printer, arrived at
his little clam ranch, on the Alsea Bay, last
Tnesdayr He says the peple of that section
are in excellent spirits over the railroad
prospects. The weather fine, aud roads in
very good condition.
The attorneys in the law suits against the
late Democratic State officials have charged
for their services the neat little sum of
000, and the referee $2,500. $8,500 is quit,
a fee to pay for the pleasure of finding out
something we already knew, which is about
all we are likely to realize out of those cases
J. L. Cook who has been for a number
of years a resident of this city died at his
residence in this citv on the evening of the
3rd (Wednesday) and was buried on the
evening of the 4th. the funeral was from
the Presbyterian church tinder the direc
tion of the Corvallis Fire Depatinent of
which the deceased had long been a member.
Accidentally Shot. Rev. Mr. Martin,
who drives the Corvallis and Junction stage,
was accidently shot hile. attempting to
draw a pistol from his pocket, in Jack Hud
son's saloon ; the ball passing down through
his coat tail, striking one of his left fingers,
Inflicting a painful, but not a dangerous
wound.
For California. Miss Grace Hanna, of
this city, started for an extended visit to
California on Wednesday. She will be ab
sent until about April. She will be at
Nordhoff in Ventura county.
Wanted. A few more cords ot wood,
either oak, ash or maple, at this office, on
subscription to the Gazette. We would
like those intending to bring wood to deliver
it soon, so that we can get it housed before
the winter rains set in.
