The public cordially invited Rev. J. Bowersox, Pastor. The Republican Ratify. Last Satur day evening being the time previously fixed that Senator Mitchell would speak in Cor vallis. The Republicans also fixfcd the same time to ratify the recent Republican victor ies in Ohio and Indiana, and the occasion was one that made itself felt on the politi cal circles of Corvallis. A large delegation from the Garfield and Arthur Club of Al bany were present in uniform; about 7:30 a large number of Republican voters carrying lighted torches and headed by the Second Brigade Band marched through the street stopping at the Occidental Hotel, where they were joined by the speakers of the evening, and thence to the City Hall which by this time was well filled by an expectant crowd. The Garfield and Arthur Glee Club then furnished some excellent vocal music, after which, Senator Mitchell was intro duced and for two hours and a half held the audience as if spell bound. The large au dience room and the gallery of the City Hall were tilled to their utmost capacity, as well as the aisle, and very many persons were compelled to go away for want of room. A high compliment to Senator Mitchell's speech was a large number of per sons remained standing throughout the whole two and a half hours ; after the con clusion of the speech a procession was formed bearing torches ; this procession was the largest ever fn Corvallis, reaching over three blocks in length, and the torches were all carried by men over twenty-one years of age and not by small boys. The utmost de corum and good order was observed during the whole demonstration, but the Republi cans showed by more ways than one the en thusiiistic confidence they felt in the final re cult of the impending election. Benton county is good for Garfield and Arthur on the 2d of November next. Another Pioneer Gone. Benjamin Freeland, a native of Maryland, a resident for many years of Indiana, and since 1S53 a citizen of Linn county, Oregon, died on Fri day evening last at the residence of his son, Dr. B. R Friedland, in Albany. Father Freeland, as he was familiarly called, was a soldier in the war of 1812, and has ever taken an active interest in the welfare of liis country. Having seen his children's children to the fourth generation, he died in full possession of faith in the world's Re deemer, being in the 87th year of his age. Thus one by one the veterans pass away. The Eomon Electric Light nas thus far proved a failure as. a practical light for family use, and the owners of gas stocks breathe more freely and see renewed divi dends near at hand, but the Oregon Kidney Tea has been a success from the first, ply ing large dividends of restored health to all those afflicted with back ache or any dis ease of the kidneys or urinary organs, and carrying consternation to the pockets of ri val concerns with worthless nostrums to ell. Taylor and EL Ledgerwood, of this city, were returning from Philomath, abont 1 1 p. in., and when about three miles west of this city one of the wheels of the buggy missed a culbert in the road and immediate ly upset, the horses became frightened, started to run and the result was a general smash ; both young men were slightly but not severely injured, and the buggy consid erably damaged. Democratic Speaking. On Tuesday evening Hon. N. L. Butler, of Polk coun ty, spoke at the Court House to an indiffer ent audience. Mr. Butler is not the oest orator in the State but is a man of good common sense, and his address was about as good as any Democrat who has been in town during the campaign ; but his hearers were few, owing, perhaps to lack of adver tisement. His speech was a repetition of the old story, and was quietly received. Politics heating. Republicans jubilant. Politicians putting in their best licks. Highest cash price paid for wheat at T. J. The Democracy mH it fusion in Maine and confusion in Indiana and Ohio. M. M. T. Ellis, County Clerk of Polk county, was in Corvallis the first of the week. J. T. Tayler has been appointed Agent for the Aetna Life Insurance Company. The Pride of Commerce cigar at the Cor vallis Household Store. The best in the city. The Kings Valley Garfield and Arthur Club meets to-morrow. They have a mem bership of over forty. Miss Nettie Pitman, who has been at tending Rocford Siminary in Illinois, return ed home last Saturday. A Cauthorn & son are building a new warehouse for agricultural implements ad joining their store building. A number of our citizens went to Port land on Tuesday to" attend the Republican ratification meeting held in that city on that evening. Hon. D. J. Holmes, of Polk county, was in town the first of the week. He contem plates moving to our city to live. Mrs. S. A. Hemphill and Little Mack re turned from an extended visit to friends in the Eastern States last Saturday. Ed. C. Phelps of Newport was in the city on Wednesday and favored us with a call. Ed. has one of the finest nurseries in Benton county. If you want good bargains in hardware, glassware or tinware of any kind call at Mason's Bakery. These goods are being sold below cost. There will be services at the lower Dis trict school house on next Sabbath at 11 a. m. and 3:30 p. m. by Rev. F. P. Davidson. All are invited to attend. One of the commendable features of the Redublican ratification meeting in Corvallis last Saturday evening was that immediate ly after the demonstrations were over those who participated, went quietly and soberly home, and did not spend the remainder of the night in disipation. Mechanic's Fair. The Mechanics Fair at Portland has been a grand success in every way. The articles exhibited are said to be very fine and well worthy of special notice. There were a great many people in attend ance from the interior of the State. Take it altogether we believe that the managers of the fair may congratulate themselves on having made the exhibition a grand success. OBITUARY. Mr. Thomas Thrasher, an old and res pected citizen of tins enmity, died jBi long and painful iMiess, at his daughters, Mrs. Harris Simon, on Butte creek, Uma tilla county, Oct. the 9th 1880, in his 70l,h year. Mr. ihrasher came, to Oregon iir an early day from Missouri and settled in Linn county, where he lost his wife ; after which he removed to Yaquina Bay where he lived for eleven years. He was engaged in mer cantile business while on the Bay for a num ber of years, but his health failing him he was compelledto retire from active fte. In the hope ofregaiffing his health he went'tast of the mountains, but Mb hopes were never realized and he peacefully passed away from earth to his final home surrounded by kind and sympathizing friends, who did all they could to alleviate his sufferings and smooth his dying pillow. Mr. Thrasher was a kind husband, affec tionate father, true friend, good citizen and honest man ; he leaves a host of friends to mourn the loss. He was one of the early pioneers who helped to fell the forest and build up the Great West. One by one those early pioneers are passing away, and soon all will be sleeping beneath the clods of the valley, f eace be to his ashes. Missouri papers please copy. A Friend, IPicked and Killed. On last Saturday afternoon the little son of Ben. Pierce of this city, aged about 7 years, was kicked by a horse, striking him in the stomach. Al though the accident did not seem serious at first, yet the little fellow complained of con siderable pain, and about midnight was ta ken much worse and about 1 o'clock Sabbath afternoon he died. is now canvassing tor and revised eWtion work. Fried man, at Buena Vista, was totally destroyed by fire. The store and goods was valued at $14,000 and insured for $7,000. Furniture a total loss. The fire occurred about 10 o'clock, and is supposed to have been the work of an incendiary. Nw Book. Mr. L. Morrill is engaged in canvassing this city in the interest or a new book entitled "The Royol Path of Life," which is a very fine work, and one that will be read by all classes with interest. Harris. of this city, recently called our attention to a squash in his store, raised on Mr. Wm nenitifl s place, on uaK ureeK, about one mile west of town, which weighed 101 pounds. This 13 pretty good weight and shows what our climate can do. Arm Amtuated. Mi. E. L. Bryan, re siding near Tangent in Linn county, and for several years a resident of this county, jot his arm caught in a circular wood saw in Albany last Wednesday and so badly injur' ed it that amputation was necessary, and the operation was performed by Dr. Alexander on that day. Wanted. A few more cords of wood either oak, ash or maple, at this office, on subscription to the Gazette.
