On last Friday, a little daughter of J. H. Penn was taken 8ick with what was considered only an attack of sore throat, but, becoming worse, Dr. Farra was called, and he pronounced it a case of bona fide diphtheria. Many tainilies in this city, and through out the Willamette Valley, will ever re member the visit of this scourge three years go. Many family circles were broken up by the dread monster. There was seemingly no remedy to be found for it, and when a little one was stricken down, it seemed that all the grief-stricken parents could do was to make the last hours of their darling at pleasant as possible. We have, iudelibly stomped upon our brain, the memory of one family, which, on the 4th of July, 1877, v.'.w as happy as could be, but before the-4th of August, only one short month, had laid three of their darlings to rest in the quiet shades of Crystal Lake cemetery. They were the pride and joy of a kind and indul gent father who has since gone to join them in the better world above and the centcalization of all the hopes of a loving moths.-, "out diptheria, the unrelenting de won, fastened itself upon them, and the grave claimed them for its own. Many other f amilies suffered as deeply, and some even "t more. May God in His mercy yrant that those scenes of horror may not be re-enacted in this, or any other couimnnity. Garfield and Arthur Clot. On last Friday evening the Garfield and Arthur Club of this city held a business meeting at the C..::rt House to make arrangements for a more vigorous compaign in this county. The meeting was well attended and the ne cessary steps taken to carry war into the enemies camp from this time forward until election. The various committees hereto fore appointed reported progress, and the following additional ones were appointed : Executive committee, J. W. -Rayburn, E. B. McEIroy, John Kolsay, B. W. Wilson and M. S. Woodcock ; on music, F. A. Vin- Vineent, L. Y. Wilson and F. M. Johnson. The last irfSSlioned committee have organ ized a glee club composed of some of the b.;st musical talent in the city and will be ready to furnish vocal m'isie for the public meeting of the club. The Republicans of Be;itou County are alive in this work and for the next five weeks will make their presence felt in political circles. Let the good work go on. Two-Faced. Sister Duniway, of the "New Northwest," in her issue of Sept. 23d, in speaking of the different lobbyists at the capital, is very hard on Mrs. Packard and accuses her of leing two-faced. 'It seems that Sister Duniway, under the impression that she was a woman suffriigist, has been giving her some free advertising ; and now that she finds that Mr3. Packard does not l'dieve in wonvn having the ballot, is con siderably worried. We are glad to note, however, that Sister D. will admit that there are some sino.i t women who do not de sire the use of the ballot box. County Court next Monday. T., will return to Corvallis to-morrow and remain over Snbbath. On to morrow even ing he will lecture at the College Chapel on the life of Aaron Bnrr. This lecture is spoken of as one of his best, and many of our .citizens having expressed a desire to hear it will now have the opportunity. Touching Lines. In last weeks' issue of the New Northwest, appear some very touching lines from Mrs. M. E. Bnrbank, the mother of Miss Eva Bnrbank, who was recently drowned at Ilwacco Beach, and a reply from the pen of Mrs. Duniway. The mother s poem shows that it came from the heart, and Mrs. Duniway 's reply, also verse, exhibits a deep, sympathetic feeling. Married. It is a fact well established by unques tionable testimony that Hall's Hair Renewer renews, cleanses, brightens, invigorates and restores to its original color and lustre, faded gray or discolored hair, cheaply, quickly and surely. The poorest people prefer to buy it and use it, rather than to proclaim in a manner more forcible than words can delineate, through blanched locks or grizzy beard, that they are aged and passing to decay. A very short trial will convince the most skeptical that it does eradicate the scalp diseases whieh rob the hair of its color and life. Fort Scott (Kan.) Daily Monitor.
