Joseph Thompson, of Toledo, paid our
-sanctum a visit on last Monday, and from
him we learn the following items of interest:
Tweuty wagons filled with pleasnre seekers
for the Ray were on the road Sunday, and
as great a number the day before.
Samuel Case is building a new store
house and wharf at Newport, and will put
in a new and complete stock of goods as
soon as the building is completed.
More than four hundred persons are camp
ed in anil about Newport, and quite a num
ber of guests are at the hotels, and still the
road is lined with teams on their way to
the beach.
Mr. Thompson has comp'eted the census
of Toledo. Elk City and Newport precincts,

by Rev. H. Borris. of Po-tland. and wit
nessed liy the relatrffes and a few intimate
friends d the contracting parties. It was
our good fortune to be present on this occa
ion, and it is seldom that we have the
jriviles.'e of attending a more enjoyable af
fair. 'The bride was dressed in white si'k.
with the usual tlowin:; vail an 1 orange flow
ers an I looked simply lovely. The ceremo
ny was lieautiful an 1 impressive.
After the marriae ceremony the compa
ny repaired to the dining room where two
hours was spent in the discus ion of the
dinner that did credit even to the we'l
know n hospitality of the hostess. A num
ber of toasts were offered wi'h pleasing and
appropriate remarks by different persons,
among which the remarks of Mr Moses
Neugass, urging the younsrer members of
the company to follow the example just set
them by the occasion, were very happy.
The party did not brake up until a late
hour of the evening, when all went home
with the best wishes for the future prosper
ity and happiness of the newly wedded
couple.
Thb Cricket Match. Last Saturday
evening the Portland Cricket team arrived
an Corvallis for the purpose of playing a
match game with the Corvallis team on
the Mond iy following. The player were
omposed of fine athletic men, mnny of
whom bad earned quit! a reputation as
4!ayers, and many were the pre lietion? as
to who would be the successful competitors
in the contest, of course the Corvallis team
being at home, had many symoatlmera. but
the Portland boys seem ; 1 confi lent, and both
parties went to the field confident of success.
The game commenced at 10 a. m. . the Cor
vallis team having the b its, an I on the first
inning run their score up to 1 11 runs. The
The Portland team then took their turn
with the bats but misfortune seemed to be
in store for them at every move, some of
their best player lieing pnt out on the first
run, and at the end of their Hrst inning they
had only scored 15 runs, they then, under
the rules of the game, took the bats for the
second inning ami were more fortunate, but
only succeeded' in running their score up to
58, making in the two innings 73 runs, so
Corvallis was victorious by one inning', and
38 runs. Of the Corvallis team, Mr. Fran
cis was the best player, making 41 runs.
Mr. Gray also made the good score of 28
runs. Mr. Coote, though less fortunate
with the bat, was an excellent bowler and
added much to the success of the game.
The game lasted all day, and was witnessed
by a lare crowd of spectators who took a
lively and enthusiastic interest iu the playing.

Snow in the Cascades. For the benefit
of those who wish to cross the Cascade
mountains, we would say that we are in
formed from reliable sources, that cattle
and horses can now cross without much
trouble, although there is considerable snuw
on the roa l, commencing on Seven Mile
hill, between Snow creek and the summit,
and reaches from there over to a p iut be
tween Crater springs and C'-die creek.
The snow is so deep wagons cannot now
cross, but will prolably be able to get over
by the 20th of this month.
Improvements. Among the many im
provements in our city, we notice the fol
lowing new resiliences in course of construe
tion. The Presbyterian and M. E. Church
are each building a new par-onage, J. C.
Taylor, E. V. Fisher ami J. H. Lewis, each
a new dwelling house. These buildings are
all neat and commodious and will add much
to the general appearance of the city.
Census of Benton County. The census
enumerators of Benton county have com
pleted their labors and filed their lists with
the County Clerk. Many of the facts col
lected by them, they are required to keep
secret, but we have obtained from their
lists the number of inhabitants which
amounts in ail. to six thousand, nine hun
dred and twenty-two.

Miss Ann Graham, of Toledo, is visiting
friends in the city this week.
The census shows Portlands population
to be 20.500, of which 4,000 are Chinese.
A great many of our citizens have been
attending the State Fair at Salem this week.
Louis Belhls, of Roseburg was in the city
on Tuesday and WeduesJay accompanied
by his family.
E. A. Swan, Indian agent from Siletz
passed through town Monday on his way
home from Portland.
Prof. B. L Arnold and B. J. Hawthorne,
accompanied by their families are speuding
a few week at the Alsea.
Benton Bowers, of Grant county, but for
a long time, a resident of Corvallis is in
the city looking after business.
Base Ball match this evenim between the
first and picked nine of the Corvallis club,
on their ground, in the upper part of town.
The Fourth of July cominj on Sunday
this year no demonstrations were made in
Corvallis, beyond the displaying of a few
flags. . ;
A meeting 1f the Corvallis Cricket Club
will be held in the Bind room at 7:39 P. M.,
Friday. Members are specially requested
to 1 present.
The Light House tender Shubrick came
into Cape Folweather last week with sup
pliet for the light house, and came into New
port this week.
New and elegant stock of millinory goods
just received, at Mrs. E. A. Knight's, which
will be sold cheaper than they cau be bouht
any where else in the city.
Mr. (I. Rosenthal and wife, of Olympia,
W. T. was in Corvallis the first of the week
to att -nd the wedding of their brother, E
Rosenthal, on last Sunday.

An oriental traveller descrilies this busy
scene, witnessed on historic shores : "Our
steamer landed on a beach which was the
iNjrt of Antioch, where the disciples were
first called Christians. There was no town
at the water 's edge, no people, no wharf.
The passengers and the mercbanise were
put ashore in lighters, which ran up ino
the sand. A troop of camels, with their
drivers, lay on the beach, ready to tr-nsfer
the gootls into the interior. Among the
articles landed tvere boxes marked 'J C.
Ayer & Co., -Lowell, Mass., U. S. A.,'
showing that they contained medicine and
whence they came. These with other goods
were hoisted on the l acks of camels, for
transportation to Antioch. Thus the skill
of the West sends back its remedies to heal
the maladies of lopulatious that inhabit
those eastern shores, whence our spiritual

Almost a Fike. On Tuesday evening
about 6 o'clock p. M. . a fire alarm was
heard, and soon the house owned by Mrs.
Briggs, in the lower end of town, occupied
by Mr. Spiers, w is discovered to be on fire.
The Hook and Ladder bovs were soon ou
the ground, and the fire was extinguished,
without any serious damage being done.

EXHIBITION.
The Philomath Public School gave an ex
hibition in Kisor's Hall, Friday evening,
June 29th, which was largely attended and
was duly appreciated. The exercises con
sisted of declamations, essays, dialogues,
etc. Excellent music was furnished by the
Philomath Band. Although the exercises
were good throughout there were some that
deserve special mention. The salutatory by
Miss Davidson was delivered in a most ex
cellent manner. The recitation of " Doom
ed Sentinel," by Master Fred Rayburn, was
a brilliant feature of the evening. The tab
leaux " Mysteries of an initiation into a
Good Templar's Lodge," was very amusing,
the goat was perfectly gentle, and the can
didate was taken through. This perform
ance pleased the average Philomathites very
much.
Mr. Becker, editor of the Crucible, was
called upon and ma le some special and gen
eral remarks, and treated the audience to a
hearty lau ,'h, he spoke in very eulogistic
terms of Prof. Thompson and the aoconi
p'ishments of his sdiool. Presents were
conferred by the teacher upon the several
pupils, who, by punctual and regular at
tendance, and application to study merited
