PASSED AWAY.
Mr. H. Brenner, proprietor of the Es
mond Hotel, Portland, died quite suddenly
in his appartments at the hotel last Friday
afternoon at 1 :30 o'clock. About two weeks
before his death, Mr. Brenner was taken
aick with rheumatic fever, and up to the
time of his death was unable to leave his
room. For some days he had been improv
ing and his recovery seemed assured. Thurs
day evening and the day ltefore his death he
was feeling quite weil. He took a sudden turn
for the worse about 1 o'clock, and half an
hour later passed away. The direct and
immediate cause of Mr. Brenner's death
was rheumatism of the heart.
The deceased is well and favorably known
all over the State. He was for some years
proprietor of the St. Charles Hotel at Alba
ny. For the past eight years deceased has
been a resident of Portlaud, being most of
that time engaged in mercantile pursuits.
He was proprietor of the Progress Club
rooms at the corner of Alder and Front
streets, for about two years. Some two
months ago he became proprietor of the
Esmond.
Mr. Brenner was a native of B -hernia,
Germany, and 52 years of age. He caine to
Oregon over 20 years ago and since then has
been a resident of the State. A fond and
devoted wife, and a son Mr. Jacob Brenner
and daughter, Miss Rosa survive. His
family are greatly afflicted over the sudden
and terrible stroke.
Mr. Brenner was an Industrious, enter
prising and estimable citizen, and his death
is widely regretted by a large circleof friends j
and acquaintances. He was sn honored
member of North Pacific Lodge, I. O. B. B. ;
also a member of the Odd Fellows fraternity.
Mr. Brenner was well and favorably
known in this city, having formed hosts of
friends here during his residence iu our
neighboring city, Albany.
A Cutting Affair. On last Saturday
evening, just after dark, considerable ex- ;
citement was created in town, by the report
that a man had leen assaulted and robbed
in the lower part of town. On making in
quiry, we found that Mr. Collins, who lives
on Soap creek had been in town all day and
hail started home, a little the worse for
liquor, and when Jnst below the M. E.
church, on Second street, was assaulted by
two men, supposed to be persons that he
had hail difficulty with a tew hours before.
The result was, that Collins was pretty
severely lieaten, and cut with a knife in
several places about the head and f.ice. It
was quite dark and the assaulting parties
were not recongnized, but no attempt was
made to rob Collins, so the difficulty must
have beeu the result of a former quarrel.
Dr. Le- was called ami after the wounds
were dressed Mr. Collins was taken home, !
and we are informed, is rapi liy recovering.
State Fair commenced yerterday.
Next Sunday is the glorious Fourth.

Prof. Elvin Glass closes his second term
of school to-day.
E. A. Swan, Indian agent at the Siletz,
was in town last week.
The McCnlly makes daily trips between
this city and Salem.
The excursion to Astoria has been fixed
for the 20th of July.
A large number of our citizens adll attend
the Fair this year.
The Willamette is much higher at this
place than usual at this season.
Our citizens were t rated to a genuine
Eastern thunder shower last Tuesday.
Geo. Gerhard keeps the boss chewing gum;
if you don't believe it, ask Miss .
Thanks to Mrs. H. Gerber for a fine lot of
cherries and a beautiful boquet.
J. B. Congle, of Portland, was in the city
last Thursday and Friday.
Only seven " Drunks " in Recorder Bry
son's court last Monday morning.
Dr. F. A. Vincent started for Buena Vista
yesterday morning, on professional business.
The Fourth of July will be celebrated on
the fifth at Salem, in grand style this year.
Yon can go to Salem and return the same
day, for $2 00, until Saturday night of next
week.
Jas. Drake, of this city, has gone to Port
land to have his throat treated by Dr.
Jones.
Dr. A. ML Belt. John Parker and E. W.
Cooper, of Independence, were in the city
last Thnrsday.
Commencement exercises at Philomath

Prof. J. W. Johnson, of thp State Univer
sity at Eugene, is visiting his brother, J. D.
Johnson, near this city.
Will B. Rice, agent of the O. & C. R. R.

last Friday, to bp absent several weeks. Mr.
Hanna will preach at Newport next Sabbath,
July 4th.

Mr. Chas. Prosch, editor of the Seattle Iu
telliueucer paid our sanctum a visit last
Thursisy. Mr. Prosah had lieen traveling
in Eastern Oregon for several weeks past
and paid this section of the count-y a visit
on his way home.
We are informed that the work on the
Yaquina Bay wagon road is now nearly com
pleted, and that a person can easily drive
throngh from Corvdlis to Newport, in a day.
This may lie rather a hard drive, owinsr, to
the distance, but no obstructions in the
road will prevent it.

was ably piloted by Mr. Follet.
3. Steeple Chase Open to all comers.
Florence resulted in a walk ovar for Mr.
Pete Riley, who, we were sorry to see, came
a mucke at the first fence. Mr. Wallis
Nash officiated as Umpire, Mr. Acklom as
Referee and Mr. Headman, as starter.

Annual Confebence. The twenty
eighth annual session of the M. E. Confer
ence will be held in Eugene City, commenc
ing August 19th. Bishop Wiley, of Cin
cinnati, will preside.
Celebration at Alsea. The citizens of
Alsea valley will celebrate the 104th anni
versary of American independence in grand
style, on Monday the 5ih. At a recent
meeting arrangements were completed, and
if the weather remains fair, one of the most
enjoyable events in the history of the valley
will take place. Rev. J. H. Becker, of
Philomath, has been chosen orator; Geo. H.
Rycraft, Reader of Declaration; Willis
Vidito, Marshal ; Rev. Mr. Ellis, Chaplain.
The pic-nic dinner in the grove will lie an J
important feature of the day, and we know i
from experience that the ladies of the val
ley are adepts in the art of cooking. Fol

Grand Lodge of Workmen. A gentle
man, a delegate to the Grand Lodge of
Workmen, a-hic-h was in session at Astoria
last week, took the census of that body by
their affiliation, and found of the delegates
in attendance forty-six in number ; that 32
were Odd Fellows, 19 were Masons, and 12
were both Masons and Odd Fellow, while 7
only belonged to the A. O. U. W. alone.
A Politic-d census showed 35 votes for Gar
field and 1 1 for Hancock, while a vote of
all passengers on the Bonita, including the
above, resulted Garfield 61; Hancock 23.
Cricket Match. On Monday and Tues
day next there will lie a grand Cricket Match
between the Portland eleven and our Cor
vallis eleven, on- the ground west of the
depot The Portlaud team will arrive on
Saturday afternoon, and will be billeted on
the various English houses. This is the
first match of the kind that has ever
Been played in this city, but we hope it will
Be by no means the last X,
Severely Injured. From the Portland
Bee we learn that Walter De Clark, son of
Tillman De Clark, road master on the W.
0. It. R., was severely injured, last Mon
day, by nn adze glancing on a knot. The
adze struck him near the ancle, severing all
the cords of the leg, and it is thought he
will be a cripple for life.
Albany R R, Hotei Mr. J. M. Gross,
formerly proprietor of the Railroad House
at McMinnville, has assumed the manage
ment of the Railroad Hotel at Albany,
which will be ready for the public July 1st.
, Festival. The ice-cream and strawber
ry festival given by the ladies of the M. E.
Church, of this city, last Thursday evening
was a very pleasant and enjoyable affair,
'lhe ice-cream was excellent, and clearly
proved that those who made it understood
their business. A novel feature was the hot
strawberry short cake, which was served
during the evening. There was not a vety
large attendance, but all who did attend
seemed well p'eased.
A CARD TO THE FARMERS-
When the East Side Railroad was being
built, at Albany, some unsofisticated gentle
men were induced by the Railroad Company
to build a ' Mammoth Warehouse" at the
depot the Railroad Company asserting all
the while that noswitch would be built to the
river warehouses. The farmers consulted
their best interests and stored their grain on
the river, whereupon the Railroad Company
built a switctfo the river, thus leaving the
" Mammoth Warehouse" out in the cold
Moral Railroad companies will do what
ever it is their interest to do don't you
forget it
I am considerably of the opinion that the
farmers can cause a switch to be built to
the river this faU by simply storing on the
river. In any event, with the advantages
of competition among steamboat men which
has already reduced freight to $1 50 per
ton, with the advantages of the millers along
the river to compete with the Portland
buyers and with capital ready to buy your
wheat as soon as it is threshed, we can
trust the R. K. company to build A side
track as soon as we are needing it very
