HOME AGAIN We arrived borne on Thursday of last week, at 9:30 P. M., after a two months' ab sence, and were cordially greeted at the Westside train by a hos; of kind, warm hearted friends. Such a greeting' was quite unexpected, hut all the more appreciated and enjoyed by as. To us there is no place like home, and no friends like those who have stood by us for nearly a quarter of a century in Benton county. Although some what benefitted by the trip, we are not pre ared to take hold of the Gazette with that vigor and vim which we desire, or that the varied interests of onr county demands. But we will do the best we can under the circumstances, and trust to kind friends for continuance of their valued aid and sup port. And right here we will return thanks to the several gentlemen who have so kindly tendered their services, and so ably con ducted the Gazette during our absence. Such kindness cannot be measured by d liars and cents. To each we make our most po lite bow, feeling confident that their labors have been appreciated, as evidenced by the continued and increased support given the paper during our absence. It is no easy work, or trivial matter, to step upon the treadmill of journ.ili.-Tn and cater to the va ried tas'es of a reading public; and while - some little local chafing is almost unavoida ble, it is worthy of all praise to note that the paper has been true to the best interests of the county, and those in charge have fully carried out our views and plans relative to the public good. We spent six weeks of our visit in Los Angeles, Cal., one of the oldest towns in Southern California. During that time we visited Anaheim, Orange, Santa Ana, Down ey City, Santa Monica, Wilmington, San Gabriel Mission, Pasadena, Sierra Mad re Villa, and many of the largest vineyards and orange ojhards in that part of the state, among which were those of Messrs, Pose, Wilson, Short) and WolfskiH, and were delighted with the country, climate, etc., but found many discontented, unh.'ppy people, more or less sickness, and much complaint of scarcity of money and hard times. We would advise no one who is well to do in Oregon, or enjoying good health, to make a change without first mak ing a visit thither. Many Califoruians are anxious to come to Oregon and Washington Territory, and we look for large accessions to our population from that state. Southern California is a nice place to winter, and we found a number of Ore gouinns down there. Among thein were ex-Senator Corl ett and wife. J. C. Aius worth and wife, and C. D. Burkhart. We found ample material for a numlier of inter esting letters, 1 ut we left home for the ben efit of our health exclusively, and to escape labor and care, and hence we have not hith erto, nor do we yet feel able to write up our trip. Under these circumstances we know the readors of the Gazette will not expect it of us. Suffice it to say we are glad to get homy and greet our numerous friends in Webfoot, and receive the friendly shake of the hand from those to whom we are bound by the strongest ties. CCRVALLI8 CRICKET CLUB A meeting of gentlemen interested in the formation of the above Club was held in the Band room, on Friday evening last. A. E. Ack lorn was in the chair. From thence we came by the A 1 iron steamship State of California, commanded by Capt. G. Debney; 1st officer, J. M. Fields ; purser, M. M. Bucknara ; chief eng., C. B. White ; stew ard, G. W. Edwards. We had a large pas senger list, and although the trip was quick and the sea comparatively smooth, yet quite a number of the lady passengers were very sea-sick our wife among the number. Capt. Debney is every inch a gentleman, and looks well to the comfort of every passenger on his ship. We went down on the Oregon and returned on the State of California, and take great pleasure in recommending both vessels to the traveling public. Painted. The M. E. church building, in this city, has been greatly improved by a cb it of paint inside. Revs. Chapman and Royal, aided by Rev. J. N. Dennison, man-ipul-ited the brushes. There was a young man of Philomii, Whose mind was so stupidly dense, he Could never see why " She " played "Sweet By and By " When she wanted the j outh to go hence, see? We spent six weeks in Los Angeles, very pleasantly, and would have enjoyed several weeks in riding around the country, with numerous friends and acquaintances there, bad our health permitted. Hope to have more time, next visit. We had the pleasnre ot meeting Mr. Tf B. Hayes, of Wilmington, Cal., who made a visit to Orezon. some two years since. He is son-in-law of Mrs. S. M. Stout, formerly of this county. He is well situated there, and takes life easy. Hon. R. A. Bensell and wife, of Newport, have bn weather-bound in the valley, for a fortnight., Mr. B. has been making good use of the time in working for Yaquina Bay. No sacrifice of time or money is too great for bim to make in the interest of Benton county. A Washington correspondent of the Port land Standard, dated 14th kit,, says: Col. T. Egenton Hogg, of Corvallis, was here for a few days last week, trying to help Gov. Whiteaker and Senator Slater to obtain an appropriation for Yaquina Bay. The same correspondent says Miss Pat ton. Mrs. E. N. Cooke and the pretty Mrs. Helm, of Oregon, were visiting here last week. Correction. Mr. A. D. ScrafFord, a sub scriber to the Gazette, informs us that sev eral material errors occurred in an item in the last issue of our paper nnder the head ing of "Child Stealing." He claims that our reporter was misinformed relative to the facts in the case. Mr. Scraffbrd says the child's mother was the only person engaged in the so-called kidnapping and that she returned the child to this city, at its own request. We regret that anything should find place in our columns calculated to in jure or offend any one but it makes all the differance in the world "how a thing is told." P. S. Since the above was in type, we have received a lengthy letter from Mrs. E. J. Sera fiord, of Albany, giving quite another version of the affair, and denouncing the statements of onr last week's item as mali ciously false and slanderous. Domestic dif ferences are always unpleasant, and we re gret that this matter got into the Gazette, but cannot see that it would help the mat ter to publish the letter which is a scorcher. We trust this explanation will be satisfac tory to all parties, and that the matter will be allowed to rest. Golden Wedding. Last Friday being the 51st anniversary of the wedding of " Uncle Peter " Polly and his estimable wife, their friends planned, and successfully carried into execution, a very pleasant sur prise party. Mr. and Mrs. Polly were in vited to the house of Mr. Shedd for supper, and as soon as darkness came on their friends took possession of their residence and on their return they were greeted by a large number of friends who had brought with them everything that could be thought of in the way of "good eating," and had turned the usually quiet home into oue of joyous mirth. The affair was a perfect sur prise to the parties, and the gathering one of the most pleasant it has been our good for tune to attend for a long time. Four gener ations of the family were present. The ev cuing was spent in conversation, music and a few impromptu speeches by members of the party. After a very pleasant evening all went home happy and with" hopes that Mr. and Mrs. Polly might celebrate many more anniversaries. Fine Lodge. While at Loi Angeles we hail the pleasure of visiting Philadelphia Lodge, A. F. & A. M., and was more than pleased to find our old-time friend G. Q. Stewart, (a Corvallis boy,) W. M. of the Lodge. The Hall is one of the finest and most elegant in the State, and all the fur niture an 1 paraphernalia fully corres pond, while the working of the Lodge, under W. Master Stewart, wonld do credit to much older and more experienced heads. It is no small honor for a young man to be placed in the East, in any Lodge of Masons, but when selected from scores of the old stand-bys of the Order, like he was, it speaks volumes n praise of Granville, and his numerous friends in Oregon may well feel proud of the honorable position he has attained, as a reward of trne merit. Hon esty, capability and diligence in business the best capital a young man can possess. Westside R. R. We returned from Portland by the Oregon Central or Western Oregon railroad, last week, and were agreea bly surprised to find the road in such good order. It was far smoother than could rea sonably have been expected, especially that portion that was constructed during the stormy weather, and literally laid in soft mud. Thanks to J. Brandt, Esq., for fa vors. The managers of this road are doing all in their power to accommodate the pub lic. Blue Ribbon Club meets next Saturday evening, and we expect to have a good time, as usual. Glad to hear that Hon. Jas. A. Yantis is to be with us on that occasion.
