THANKSGIVING PROCLAMATIONS.
The following proclamation has been is
sued by President Hayes for the observance
of & day of general thanksgiving t
At no recurrence of the season, which the
devout habits of religious people has made
occasion for giving thanks to Almighty Lroit,
and humbly invoking His continued favor,
has the material prosperity enjoyed by our
whole country been more conspicuous, more
manifold or more universal. .During the
past year also unbroken peace with all for
eign nations, general prevalence of domes
tic tranquility, the supremacy and security
of the great institutions of civil and religous
freedom have gladdened the hearts of our
people, and confirmed their attachment to
the Government, which the wisdom and
courage of our ancestors so fitly framed, and
the wisdom and courage of their descendants
have so firmly maintained, to be the habita
tion of liberty and justice to successive gen
erations. Now, therefore, I, Rutherford B. Hayes,
President of the United States, do appoint
Thursday, the 27th day of November, inst.,
as a day of National thanksgiving and pray
er ; and I earnestly recommend that, with
drawing themselves from secular cares and
labors, the people of the United States do
meet together in their respective places of
worship, there to give thanksgiving and
praise to Almighty God for his mercies, and
and devoutly to beseech their continuance.
In witness whereof, I have set my hand
and caused the Great Seal of the United
States to be affixed.

In accordance with an established custom,
which has been observed annually far a long
period of time, I, W. V. Thayer, as Execu
tive of this State, do hereby appoint Thurs
day the 27th day of November, 1879, as a
day of thanksgiving.

Seal of the State of Oregon this the 10th

THE NEW t ISTKRJi.
The following is the report of the com
mittee to whom was rt-ferred the matter
of improving the cistern at the intersec
tion of Second and Madison streets, ex
cept the itemized expense.-.:
To the ilngor and Comiuou Council of the
City of Corvallis:

was referred the matter of improving cis
tern At the intersection of Second and
Madison Streets beg leave to make the
following report, to-wit: That they
Lave improved the same in the following
manner; after having the water pumped
out au'd the timbers and planking front
the iuslde removed, we then proceeded to
tiavc the same rounded out. and walled up
with an eight-inch wall of good hard brick
and lime mortar, arch turned in same
manner, and a cast iron rim and lid plac
ed iu ceiUcr. The bottom of same is laid
with two layers of brick on a side the first
is grotted with lime-mortnr and second
layer with cement mortar. The entire
surface Is plastered one coat with lime
mortar to make a smooth surface, then a
coat of good cement with light cement
wash over the same. Tlis size of cistern
is: circumference, 43 feet; height, 12 feet,
including arch which is 4 feet. Its capac
ity, about 14.000 gailions. It has been
tilled with water and so far has shown, no
signs of leakage.
Wedding Cake. We frequently receive
wedding cake, of all style? and make, but
never, until the past week, received any
that was three yeai's old. Mrs. Peak
(daughter of Mr. Thos. Russell, of Alsea,)
and her husband celebrated the third anni
versary of their marriage on the 22d ult.
Upon the occasion of their marriage Mrs.
Peak made three fruit cakes, and the third
and last was cut on the late anniversary.
This cake, a sample of which is now before
us, seems just in its prime, and is reallv
splendid. Many thanks to Mr. & Mrs.
Peak for their kind remembrance of the
editor of the Gazette. May they live to
enjoy many happy anniversaries of their
wedding day, and life be "all a golden
dream."
Installation. At a regular meeting of
Excelsior Lodge, No. 9, I. O, G. T., held
last Friday night, in this city, the following

ley, the live correspondent of the San Fran
cisco Bulletin, whose racy letters are read
with so much interest throughout, this coast,
took his departure from Corvallis yesterday
morning. He has made hosts of friends for
himself and the sterling paper he represents,
during his sojourn in Benton connty, where
he will always find a cordial welcome.
" May his shadow never grow less.
Pleasant Trip. We came up last Tues
day morning, from Salem, on the Occident,
a very pleasant steamer. The state rooms
are tastefully furnished and the berths are
very wide. The following gentlemanly offi
cers were in charge of this staunch craft :
Capt., Miles Bell ; pilot, J as. Gist ; parser,
W. N. Holmes ; engineer, Chas. Jennings ;
steward, Geo. Goward. The Occident has
had her low water wheel laid aside and now
uses the one adapted to deep water.
Warehouse Burned. Mr. W. A. Wells
came up on the boat yesterday morning,
and informed us that the mammoth ware
house on the railroad track, at Albany, was
destroyed by fire about 12 o'clock Wednes
day night, owned by Gaston St Ferry. Or
igin of fire unknown. Insured for a large
amount.

" Female tramps " are all the excitement
in Portland, now.
Miss M. E. Holden, of Astoria, is visiting
friends in this city.

Mac Crow, of the Yaquina stge line, was

day, with a load of Yaquina salmon, which
went oil like hot cakes.
The Hooks have secured the services of
Brenner's celebrated string band for their
grand ball on the 21st inst.
T. W. B. Smith, of Willamette precinct,
has moved to town fur the pnrpose of send
ing his children to school this winter.
The boats are making regular trios to this
place now, and. in all probability, will con
tinue to do so for the rest of the winter.

The Corvallis sawmill has taken the con

Mr. Geo. Mercer, of this city, has been
dangerously ill for some time. We are glad
to learn that he is now considered out of
danger, and slowly convalescing.
While in Portland, last Saturday night,
Bro. Palmer, of the Telagram, furnished
complimentaries and accompanied us to Pin
afore, after which we looked iu upon the fe
male walknts.
The little steimer Nellie, which has been
making daily trips between this place and
Albany, made her last trip, for the present,
last Saturday, as the river is high enough
for the larger boats to run,

Ernest White, son of Rev. T. B. White,
of Albany, died at his father's, last Tues
day, of typhoid fever. His funeral took
place on Wednesday. No school at Corval
lis College on that day. The president and
protessors attended the tuneral.
Tlon. D. M. Thompson, one of Albany's
most esteemed and prominent citizens, died
last Saturday night and was buried, with
Masonic honors, on last Monday. Members
of the Order from different parts of the
state were in attendance.
F. S. Matthews still keeps up his lick at
the Chemeketa Hotel, Salem. Billy Hun
ter, formerly of the American Exchange,
Portland, is now acting as solicitor. Char
lie Weeks will soon accept a position on the
westside railroad.

The streets of Independence are being
graveled.
Several persons are sick of typhoid fever
at Dallas.
The Polk county court house has been in
sured for $3,000.
Three Chinamen were immersed by the
Baptist pastor at Salem recently.
Farmers throughout the valley are busy
putting iu grain.
The bridge across the Suntiam river at
Mehama is about completed.
Pleasant Surprise. Last Thursday ev
ening Miss Pawlona Clark, formerly of this
city, accompanied by an elder brother, ar
rived at Mr. D. G. Clark's, iu Albany.
They came without annoucement, as a sur
prise to the folks, and arriving while
" Dave " and family were at prayer meeting,
they had to "amuse" themselves for about
an hour on the " outside " of the house.
The surprise was complete and mutual.
Meeting Closed. The revival meeting,
which had been in progress in the Lewis
neighborhood, closed on Thursday of last
week. Rev. W. C. Kautner conducted the
services. He informs us that there were
sixteen conversions and eighteen additions
to the church membership. A Sunday
school was also organized. Ilev. Kantner is
an indefatigable worker in the cause of the
Master.
The New York I'liction is still un
settled. Republicans claim the su -cess
of their entire State ticket, and
ihe Democrat a concede nil except
Lieut. -Governor anil Treasurer. The
official count, which hean on Tues
day, will he necessary to determine
the result as the two officer named.
A Large Enterprise. During the past
week quite a change has occurred in the
proprietorship of the Plummer fruit dryers
in this valley. A company has been formed
consisting of Waliis Nash and Mr. Ree l
man, of the English colony at Corvallis,
and Nathau Whealdou, of Benton county,
and they have bought the manufacturing
right of the drier in this county from Jones
& Sill, and have also purchased the Benton
and Lane county rights. Next season they
will put out canvassers and introduce -a
great many driers throughout the three
counties, and our people will then be able to
save their fruit crops Mr. Sill has been
employed by the company and will engage
in the canvass next spring. Heretofore
there has been a difficulty in finding a ready
market for the dried fruit, but this will now
be. remedied. The new company has rented
the old Alden fruit drver in this city, and
will buy all the fruit offered for sale and
store it at that place, after which it will be
shipped direct to England. We are glad to
see monied men like Mr. Nash taking hold
of this enterprise, as its success is thus as
sured, and its success guarantees to our far
mers remunerative prices for their fruits,
which, heretofore, has rarely been market
