Heri- kle, becoming tired of city life, bought the Henry Bell place, atljoining the city: Al though a small place, not more than thirty acres, perhaps, Mr. Henkle is making it very productive, hv farming it richt. Last week we noticed a squash from his garden. at H. E. Harris' store, weighing 82 pounds, If it is as good, in proportion to its size, as lom3 of the smaller ones we tested, it can't be beat on the coast. Mrs. H. seems per fectly at home, as she caii raise her chick ena, ducks, pigs, etc., make her own butter and enjoy all the advantages of the happy farmer's wife, while only about ten minutes ride from the busy hum of the city. They are nicely located in their old days. Their big farm, eight miles distant, was too far from town to suit them. The settled expression of determination that mantles the lace of a man who is just starting out to have a tooth pulled js only equalled by the subdued look that creeps over his features as he pauses with his hand on the knob of the dental-room door, turns quietly around, and tiptoes back through the hall, out doors again. Very interesting meeting of the Blue Rib bon Club at the Evangelical church last Saturday evening. President Arnold deliv ered a very interesting address on the prop er work of temperance organizations. The reading by Mrs. VV. C. Kantner was excel lent, while the music was better than usual. The attendance was large. Too feeble to seek assistance the stranger fell exhausted upon the sidewalk and swoon ed. A gentle lady held his hand in hers when next he opened his eyes upon the world and with a sweet voice she said, "you are among friends, be quiet." A Sad Bereavement. The Portland Standard of last Saturday says : Frank, eld est son of Judge B. V. Bonham, died at his parents' residence ou Thursday of diphthe ria. The young man was just verging into manhood, leing 20 years of age, and was universally liked by all who knew him. Mere words fail to convey the sympathy felt for the stricken parents in this their second bereavement, it being but a few -weeks since they buriel their second son, an I their daughter is now dangerously ill with the game disca3C. Excellent Work. Last Friday we ex amined set of heavy draught harness made by Mr. S. Hemphill, for Mr. Clias. Deu niuk, W this county. The workman ship an 1 stock were of the first quality and while strong anl durable, were nice enough for carriage harness. Mr. Htmp hill's saddled arid harness are handma le, of the best stock, and hence his rapid sales. He deoeuds more oti durable, than tine fin ish. Ditching. Mr. O. C. Taylor, inventor and proprietor of Taylor's celebrated ditch ing machine, who dune considerable Work for the farmers of Benton county last win ter, is again in the field, and proposes to do ditching on easy terms : lie will wait until after next harvest for his pay, is desired, or make a liberal reduction for cas-h. Mr. Taylor does ills' work thoroughly and at a reasonable prite, and all who contemplate draining land should secure his services. Editorial Change. The Itoseburg Star of the 2ath inst., siys : Mr. C. L. Mosher, of the Benton County B!a le, is expected to Arrive in Roselrar.; next week. The Corvallis saw mill has received an order fox lumber to build the Westside B.R. depot W. B. Carter and wife, and H. W. Yin cut and wife, went to Portland Monday to attend the Mechanic's fair. A young man named Roberts, from Alsea valley, was lodged in the county jail last Monday, charged with incest. Mr. P. M. Abbey, mine liost of the Bay View houe. Church Sunday School of this place is now in successful operation, with Prof. Ladru Royal superintendent. Dr. F. A. Johnston, assist; lit, .has. Ewart, secre tary. Miss Ida Catou, librarian, and Mrs. W. T. Chapman, organist. Mr. Dans worth, of Yaquina Bay, and Mr. Baldwin, of Alsea, who have been en caged the past summer in the construction of bridges on the West Side railroad, re turned to this place last week en route home. Sherril, of ITarrisbnrg. has commenc ed suit against Linn county for the sum of 9,000 for damages sustained by himself and family a few months ago when a county briilge broke down while they were crossing it in in a hack. Nesmith's place : The lo cation of this dlace is as got, 1 as that of any town in the county, being the center of an agricultural country that cannot be sur passed. Col. Nesmith will si on have for sale several lots in the new town, the site of which is on the west side of the road, the land adjoining on the east having baen d e l ed to the railroad company for warehouses, etc. The n ?w town will no doubt soon grow to a place of considerable import nice. HillsWo Independent : Mr. Tompkins, who lives on the mountains above CJIeueoc, dug a well recently some fifty feet in depth, an:l found plenty of water, which l isted f-r several days. Last week, whi e working in the vicinity of his newly fmnl wa'er, Mr. T. heard a rumbling noise hke distant thun der, and glancing in the direction of his well, was surprised to sea the earth, tree3, logs and all disappearing from view for sev eral feet around his treasure. For a mo ment tuMkras thunderstruck, when it gradu ally flaslied through his miiid that the bot tom of his well hail fallen out. Upon in vestigation such proved to be the cass. It is barely possible that this strange action of nature will bring to light another Mammoth Cave. At all events the bottom ot the well is rat, and Mr. Tompkins will not undertake to repair it. In CorvaUis, at the residence of her bro ther, Andrew Emreck, October 18th, 1879, Elizabeth Troxel, wife of Frederick Troxel, aged 41 years, 10 months and 15 days. The maiden name of the deceased was Elizabeth Emrick. She was born in Illin ois, December 3d, 1838, and in 1844 her pa rents moved to Iowa and settled in Jeffer son county, where they resided until 1851, when they moved to Appanoos county. In 1859 they started across the plains to Ore gon, and on the second day of July, on the bsnk of the North Platte river, she was married to Frederick Troxel, and they came on to Oregon and settled near Rosebnrg, and removed from there to Benton county in 1862, where they have resided until her death. Her aged mother and infant son had not been gone quie one month, when she wti called to go. She leaves a husband and seven children, besides other relatives and friends, to mourn her loss. Her funeral was preached by Rev. W. T. Chapman, af ter which her remains were deposited in the family burying ground, near Philomath. Gone to a land of purs delight.
