Last Friday two extensive Chinese dens, or wash-houses, were removed to the immediate vicinity of the Gazette office one across the street, hi front, and the othi r three or four doors below. The fumes from these places, next summer, will be fearful, Unless some mflfc effective system of sewerage is adopted. If we must be cursed with such dens, can't we have an ordinance requiring them to be either oil the river or some of tne hick slrects? Why al ow them to monopolize front street, and thus breed contagion ! THE DONE-YARD. Gazette : Since my Liberal Bachelor. Hon. W. f!. Curtis, Ed. Gazette : Since my return from Eastern Oregon I have been met by numer ous inquiries concerning what 13 known in its own country a.s the "bone-yard." Per hatts some of the readers of your paper might be interested by a sketch of this won der of the desert. The bone-yard, so called, is a kind of marsh on the desert east of Silver Lake and is ab -ul five miles long by one wi le. Curtis is spoken of as the most liberal do-nator. Portlasd Callers. Cept. S. M. Don nell, special agent and adjuster of the Cali fornia Fire Insurance Company, and A. IS. Gamble, D puty revenue collector, gave us a pleasant call last Friday. The Captain was looking after insurance business, and was well pleased with Corvallis. Hon. P, A. Chenoweth has been appointed local agent Af the company, at this place. Mr. Gamble was looking after U. S. Revenue matters. We noticed that cigar and tobacco dealers were exceedingly l.usy in "cancelling stamps" soon after his arrival. The law in relation to this matter is very strict, and dealers would do well to observe its provisions. rel s. Some of them are halt buried, in my berhai'S. entirely so. Some are bemnnhaj to decay, while others are partly petrified. Some human bone3 have been founll ; one perfect skeleton that measured something over G feet., and oiie j w-bone that would pass over the jaw of an ordinary sized man quite easily. In a collection gathered by Mr. Dillard, of Summer Lake was the upper bone of the leg or arm, 2i feet in length, broken off at each end just above where it began to swell for the joints. This bone measured 12 in ches jn circimference at the smallest place. Alsi a ra lias or curved bone of the arm 2 feet in length ; teeth, resembling the jaw teeth of man, 4 to 5 inches in circumference, and a vertebra, 5 by 7 inches. A shoulder blade was brought into Silver Lake 38 inch es in length, broken off in the thinner part, where it was J of an inch thick. This singular deposit has been visited by some from the Willamette valley, among whom was ex-Guv. Whiteaker, who, I un derstand, brought some specimens home with him. It is regarded as quite a curios ity in its own vicinity, and is, I expect, worth visiting. Pearl. The Yakima Settlers. For the first e since the commencement of the Indian roubles, in this an I neighboring territories, we find the people oi the disturbed section of country depending upon themselves. The action of the sheriff of Yakima county in the late troublss is mu;h to be commend ed. Heretofore during an Indian alarm the everlasting cry has been for "troops, more troops," while at the same time the errantrj towns were crowde I with any number of well-armed men, who thought of everything but doing the work themselves, and con 'tinted themselves by loafing around salooiis and abusing Gen. Hownr.l for not doing im pc ssibililies. The conduct of some of these settlements has btea nothing less than dis graceful, brave men were the exception that, according to logic, proves the rn'e. The actions of our brave fellow citizens in Yakima county are in startling contrasi with other portions of our exposed frontier and proves them to be possessed of courage, judgemrnt and determination to pursue to the death the murderers of their friends and relatives shot down in cold blood at the threshold of their very doors. Let the good work proceed. Walla Walla Stateiman. " LADIES' IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY" REPORT ED.
