J a m e s G o r d o n M i n e .— This mine is sit uated about five miles east o f Baker City, and about four miles west of the Virtue Mine. There has been considerable work done by the parties, residents o f our city, who own the quartz ledge—they have a shaft sunk to the depth of eighty or one hundred feet, well timbered. A short time since they had seventy ton o f average rock from this mine worked in the Virtue Mine M ill, and sent the bullion to San Francisco to bo minted. On last M onday they received their returns, and lound that the seventy ton of rock crushed yicl ded them the nice little sum of $1814, or at the rate of $26,34 to the ton. The owners are well satisfied with their mine, and will continue to improve and work it. The ledges, as a general thing, in this county, as they are opened ar.d developed, are proving themselves to be richer than first appearances indicated. R a c e H o r s e s . —On last Monday Jake Bomar and Pony Y oung, of B%ise City, ar rived in our city on their way to the W al la W alla races, with six race horses, as follow s: Em m a McCormick, B illy Nutts, Weasel, Amit, Rosa Mansfield and Lusby. They áre all good horses, and if the W alla W alla folks are not careful they may find them troublesome. Messrs. Bomar and Young know what their horses can do, and are the men to back their judgment. The Sturgill brothers had started for Boise City to run against Em m a McCormick, but met her at M iller’s Station, so they turned back and arrived in our city last Monday evening. Mr. Bomar bad been informed that the Sturgill brothers had gone to W alla W a lla , or he would not have left Boise City. N ig h t L u n c h .—Mr. W m . J. Hartman, the landlord o f the Hotel De France, is now at home in this establishment with his wife as lan dlady. Everything is run ning sm ooth, and his many customers are well satisfied with his efforts to please them- He has added a new feature to his popular establishment—he is now prepar ed to furnish lunch or supper at all times of n igh t, consisting of all the delicacies to be obtained in our market. * L iv e ly B u s in e s s .—We have called in at Pap Levens’ several times lately, and always find him and his clerks busy put ting up goods sold by him . They propose to carry freights through at one-half the rates now charged. Let us see how this will woak. The 0. S. N. Company freight grain through from Wallula to Portland, a distance of 200 miles, at the rate of $3 a ton. To carry this freight, they em ploy three different steamboats, and two rail roads, requiring fi ve sets o f hands. Now the new compa ny wihtout the facilities offered by the railroads, propose to carry the freight at the rate o f $3 a ton. At the Dalles they will have to make a portage o f at least ten miles. To freight over, these portages alone will cost more than $3 per ton, and then it will be the poorest business in which a man with a team can engage. F or the reasons here given, we deem the scheme impracticable, and suggest that the matter be well considered before putting up a cash capital of $65 , 000. A measure of this kind was up before the Grangers of thisvalleyat their meeting lastsummea, and by them voted down? It was then deemed altogether too visionary to mer it the attention of farmers, and the judgment then expressed we deem altogether correct. One of the mainsprings o f this movement, is we are correctly Informed, is Joe Teel, a manwhos character is not calculated to inspire confidence. The idea that he would carry out au engagemrnt in good faith, will be laughed at by thos who know the man, and hence we suggest that our loaders be cautious before in vesting the’r means in the enterprise. As a matter o f course, we in common, with all others desire c h a p freights In fact, cheap transportation is with us a necessity, and the country can never be come entirely prosperous until this desideratum is secured. The establishment of a line o f second class boats on the river and bull teams on the port ages will never bring about this result. All such schemes amount to little more than child’s play, and are unworthy the serious consideration o f grown up men. The real solution o l the difficulty is the opening o f the Columbia Rivor by means ot locks and dams at the Dalles and Cascades When this is done, boats can load up wheat at Wallula and de liver the same at Asforia at a cost not to exceed $3 a ton and make money at that Any other preposi tion is a mere delusion, and the people who invest money in these illusory schemes are quite sure to be swindled.
