We have a large number of sub scribers who are one, two and some even three years in arrears for their paper. To such we will here say that we do not in the future intend to furnish them the D emocrat for nothing and pay their postage for that privilege. We claim the right to publish a list of those who are more than one year in arrears and the amount due, and when we do this we shall place such accounts in the hands of a proper person for collection. We are tired of, and ashamed to dun any more, and intend to let others do so for us, with cost ad led. We will not pay postage for those who never pay for their paper. C o ld W e a t h e r —The Walla Wal* la Union of Nov. 21st says, “ During the week we have had the coldest weather of the season, thus far. There is no snow iu the valley, but there is plenty of it in the rr.oun* tains, and that is one reason why the air in the valley is so cold. Every night it freezes quite hard, but as yet the ice has not been more than one inch in thickness on still water. During the day the sun shines gen erally, but not warm enough to thaw the ground or melt the ice. Those who have been making their calcula tions with a view of doing then- plowing this Fail have thus far been considerably disappointed. All the early part of the season the ground was too dry. When the rain came there was but a few days of good weather and it began to freeze so hard at night that it did not thaw out enough during the day to enable the farmers to do much plowing. Un less the weather shall soon change and become more favorable Fall sown wheat will be very scarce next harvest.” priations to make good dificiencies. It is said that the Post Office Deo rartment will require $1,000,000 ad ditional for the single item of read justment of the pay of railroads for the transportation of mail matter. It was estimated that the money neces sary for this readjustment would be $500,000; it proves that three times that amount, $1.500,000, will be re quired. Those who have read the exposures in T h e S un of the enor mous postal frauds perpetrated un« der Creswgll will not be surprised at this news, which, however, is not pleasant for tax payers in these hard times. But for a real, rousing deficiency, wait, untill Secor Robeson puts in his little bill for unauthorized ex penditures. A Portland (Me.) dispatch says Speaker Blaine, in a letter to the Portland Press, in response to a par agraph on him as a probable candi date for Senator, states decidedly that he would, under no circum stances, accept the Senatorship. He says: “ I am engaged by, and have accepted a candidacy and election to serve the people of Kennebec District as their Bepresentative in the Forty forth Congress, and from that duty I could not be turned, even were the Senatorship offered. Of that I have seen no indicatio n” He speaks in eulogistic terms of Hamlin and frankly expresses his deliberate judgement that Maine would best consult her best interest and honor by returning Hamlin to the Senate; but denies that he has used or in tends to use any influence in his fa vcr. The Press, in editorial com ments, comes out strongly against Hamlin. The Scotchman furnishes the fol lowing illlustration of the camel and gnat religion of son\e ot his country men. A traveller says: “ Sunday morning at the hotel at Dumbarton I had just got up and ruDg the bell for some hot water for shaving. A waiter answered my call. “ I want some hot water, if you please,” I said. “ And for what do you £want watei? “ For shaving I said.” Ye canna have hot water oil the Lord’s Day for sic a thing as shaving,” said the waiter horror struck at the idea. I insisted again, but with the same ef feet. “ Na, na,” said he, “ ye canna have it.” Necessity is the mother of invention, ’tis said, and this aroused mine. I thought if I could arrange this order in such a way that it would not effect his religious scru pies he would bring it directly. I therefore proposed that I should take some toddy, and told him to bring me the material for making it, consisting of whiskey, sugar, and boiling water. These he brought without the least demur. I gave him the whiskey, which he drank, and I used the hot water.” “ A W o r d o f .Toy in. E v e r y W o rd ,.” E lemingtom , Hunterdon Co., N. J., June 26, 1874.—Dr. R. V. Pierce, Buffalo, N. Dr. Pierce, however, does not wish to place his Golden Medical Discovery in the catalogue of quack patent nostrums by recommending it to cure every disease, nor does he so rec ommend it; but what he does claim is this, that there is but one form o f blood disease that it will not cure, and that disease is can cer.
