For the B edrock D emocrat . l o v e . There is something that is given By the God, above in Heaven, Something that we all do own, Even when we are alone. 7 hat this is, go and ask the bee. As it flitters o’er the lea; Go ask the squirrels, as they bound » ®r the trees as o ’er the ground. Ask the lark on its way Even ask the night, the day, Ask the flowers, beautifully fair, Ask the maid with golden hair, a b u P*°u8hboy in the field. Ask the mo’ her, whose heart is sealed, Ask the father, whose mind of care, Has brought to him his whitened hair, Awk the u8he« in the Bea, What this diadem may be; Ask the hills, the mountains high, Ask the wind as it goes by, Ask sweet nature in her dream, Ask the clearly flowing stream, Ask the glittering, bright sunbeam, Ask the clouds, up in the sky, Ask the years that are flitting by, Ask the angels, wondrous fair, As thev hover in the air, Ask all creation, in her glory, And in one word, she’ll tell the story, What this is, from above, She will answer —L ove . An interesting case has lately been tried in Illinois to test the right of Trustees of public schools to enforce a uniform course of study for all pupils. The case as reported pre sents the following facts: Miss Post was a member of the junior cluss in the High School of Durand town ship, Winnebago county, for which class bookkeeping was a prescribed study. The mother of Miss Post objected to her daughter studying bookkeeping under the plea that her health would not admit of it. For this refusal, alleged as an act of dis obedience, the young lady was ex pelled the Hehool, and it was averred in the testimony that force was used in puttiug her out. Alter such pro ceeding the step father of Miss Post applied to the school directers for her reinstatement, but they refused ex cept on condition that she should study bookkeeping. The parents were persistent in their refusal, and they then songht redress in the courts. A verdict was was rendered for the plaintiff under the direction of the Judge, the teacher for the trespass committed in the act of ex pulsion being mulcted in the sum of $130 damages. The Judge held that although it is the duty of the School Boards to make reasonable regula tions for the conduct of publicsclicols and to prescribe a certain coui'se of study, parents and guardians have a right to select from the studies pre scribed the special ones they desire their children or wards to pursue.— An intimation was, however, made by the Judge that no study could be rejected from mere whim or perver sity, but only on fair and reasonable grounds. The Judge also laid down Hie law that the refusal of a pupil, nnder tbe direction of parent, to pursue a certain study, does not war rant expulsion. T h e “ C h e e p in g ” of R a il r o a d s .— Tbe “ creeping” of railroads lias at traded some mention of late, and while we do not attempt to explain it, we offer a point on tlio fact that on lines running North and South the Western rail “ creep” faster than the Eastern rail; that is, this strange moví ment of the rail towards the South is more marked iu one rail than in the other on the same track. Furthermore, it has been noticed that on such lines the Eastern rail wears out the fastest. Both of these poiuts, we think can be explained by the motion of tbe earth as it turns from tlie West towards tbe East. Every thing that bas free motion is drag ged after the whirling globe; every wind that blows, and every tide that moves feels the influence, and our train going North and South is pull ed over towards the East, and natur ally presses the Eastern rail more heavily». The Western rail, being relieved of its share of weight,— “ creeps” more frequently and quick ly. It is also noticed that the wheels tíiat run on the Eastern rails wear out the fastest, and we but think that the earth’s motion is the true cause. The practical of this is, that the Eastern rail aud wheels should be stronger.— ÍScientific American. P o s t p on em en t! LEGAL ADVERTISEMENTS. 4th b r a n d G ilt C o n ce rt!
