The Mustering Out.
Where the Oregon boys will be mus
tered out is the exclusive topic of con
versation on the streets. The report to
day that they had voted unanimously to
be mustered out in San, Francisco was
received here with some eatisacti m on
account of the big saving, and the gen
eral sentiment that Portland was trying
to get them for a f how. The headingin
the Oregonian today "Want No Recept
iou" waa an insuit to their manhood.
Reception has nothing to do with it. It is
a matter of business. They will particu
larly rejoice at a reception from their
own people, which they will receive en
thusiastically. Mrs. Capt. Phillips received a dis
patch from Capt. Phillips this morning
announcing his safe arrival and that
they would probably be mustered out in
San Francisco, also requesting her to
join hiin there, which she will probably
do.
It is gratifying to learn that all the
men arrived safe and well.
Hon. T. J. Stites returned this noon

Corvallis.
From the Times.
John Vineyard was in town .Monday
evening. The visit was important in
that it was the first Mr. Vineyard had
made Corvaliis in several months. He
was a trusty a large part of his time at
Salem and by good behavior shortened
his term of service something like fonr
months.
AJF. Hersbner has temporarily closed
his Corvallis store, and will, in a few
days'opena summer establishment in
the Booth building on Nye Creek. The
family went over yesterday to occupy
the cottage, and Mr. Hersbner will fol
low with the stock of groceries today.
James A. Cauthorn, whose final re
covery from an attack of rheumatism
that kept him on lib back for seventeen
months, was a delight to his friends, is
not quite so well as usual. He came
down the last of the week from Hugh
Finley's where he has been rusticating
for a couple of weeks. He is now at the
home of Mrs. Purdy, end is not as well
as usual, being threatened with an at
tack of pneumonia.
The Shaw company has been playing
in California, Oregon, Washington and
Idaho for six years, but has hitherto ac
counted Corvallis too small a town to
visit. Mr. Shaw on arrival laid aside $75
that he expected to be loser in Corvallis,
but the company went away with all ex
penses paid and several dollars ahead.
Accordingly Corvallis is to be added to
the company's regular route, and will be
visited sgain next season.

A Case of Small Pox.
The folloaiog is from the Telegram, of
laat evening:
"Another case of smallpox was dis
covered in the city this morning npon
the arrival of the Southern Pacific train.
The man came from Harrisbnrg and is
so badly broken out with the disease that
he was even refused admission to the old
St. Vincent hospital, which is being ut
ilized for contagions diseases exclusively.
City Physician Wheeltr immediately
took the patient in charge, and had him
removed to the pesthouse.
"The new arrival at the pesthouse is
Richard Barrett, a young man about 28
vears of age, whose borne is at Harris-b-jrg.
He came from Harriaburg this
mon ing, but fortunately there were but
few pasaengeis oo thecar with him. Dr.
Wheeler thoroughly disinfected and fum
igated thecar npon its arrival, and also
vaccinated as many of the passengera as
he could find. He aoea not look for any
spread of the disease from exposure.
"Barrett came from Seattle on the 17th
of last month, and it is believed that he
brought the disease with him. With him
there are now four pat ents at the pest
house. Two have been discharged cured
and three more will be ready to leave iu
a few days."
Water Works Improvement. The
Water Company have about completed
I the fine new flume at the Magnolia Mills
" as though miik tor Keeps, a
carload of twelve inch pipe has arrivea
and will be laid on First street. Another
car load of six inch pipe has been bought
and will be laid at an early date. The
lower pumps have been overhauled and
the npper pumps will also be improved.
It is evident the Water Co. has faith in
the town to spend so many thousands
just now.
