Lawler, the mining expert, who has been camping on the track of the Santiam mines for the past year, and Amos Strong, of Salem, were in Albany today on their way to the mines, where active work will be pushed at once. Mr. Lanier is associated with Mr. J F. Medina, nianoirer and owner of the London Bank of Central America, and other wealthy capitalists, who intend in vesting a large amount of money in de veloping the many resources of 'Western Oregon. A few weeks ago Mr. Arthur Pearse, an English engineer, visited the property, and his report only adds to the favorable mention neretofoie made by leading experts. Mr Lawyer is now ar ranging to commence active work, and it has been entirely due to bis energy and persistence that all obstacle have been overcome, and the development of the property really begun. The work ol this season will be the driving ot three tun nels, the sinking of two shafts, and the building of a wagon road from Gates to Uuartxville. A null. 40-etatnp capacity. will also be constructed, and, le(ure the snow nies next winter, the property will be in tine working condition, llank Smith, so well known on the Comstock in its palmy davs. and until recently superintended of the Bullion-Beck mine of Utah, will have charge of the property, It was his report that convinced Mr Lawler one year ago of the value of the property, ar.d subsequent develop ment lias proven the accuracy ol the statemets made by Mr. biuith regard ing the Quartxburg prowrty. The pupils of the public schools have read eight hundred and tweniy-hve vol nines during the last four months of school. The) books were taken home and allowed to be kept for two weeks. The teachers have questioned the pupils about their reading and in some invun ces have required them to write a com position about the book read. We hav thus been able to determine what has been done. Aside from the number of readings above mentioned, sets of hooks have been used in class exercies in the school room. The patrons of the school need have no fear of their children read ing any trashy literature from the school library, as every volume in it has been carefully inspected. We believe great good bas been dore both in creating an interest in school work and in cultivat ing a taste for pure literature. I would alio like to add that every book has been returned bv the pupils and great care manifested' in returning them in good condition. Hiram Tyre, Principal. Anotiieb Hold Ur.
