Then we must be active and un ceasing in our tabors for the whole ticket. We have an abiding faith in the devotion and loyalty of the democrats of old Linn, and confidently look forward to a com plete victory In June. The republican party of the county is numerically weak, but Its leaders who are pushi ng their coun ty ticket are attempting to devise schemes to divide and distract the democrats in order to make sure of carrying this state for the presidency this fall. We say plain ly to democrats that our leaders through out the state will bend every nerve to wheel our young, vigorous, growing com moawealth into line for Cleveland this fall, but In order to succeed we must carry it in June. Hence we mut not be handi capped with local dissensions, but lay aside all such and march in solid phalanx upon the enemies lines and victory will follow "If St John can satisfactorily explain why he did not come out to Oregon last fall to labor when the prohibitory amend ment was up, instead of during the presi dential roar, it might overcome some seri ous doubts as to his sincerity in the cause he espouses." Herald Disseminator. Now this is both uncandid and unfair. Everybody knows that arrangements were made at the beginning of the prohibitory campaign last summer with St. John to canvass the state, but a howl of protest went up from every Blaine organ in the state against his coming. Blaine republi cans who claim to be temperance men threatened to vote against the amendment in case St. John took part in the campaign. It was in deference to this threat that the engagement with St. John was cancelled These facts were matters of public noto riety, and the Herald must have known them. The Democrat is not answerable for St. John, nor in any wise promoting his third party movement, but would pro mote fair dealing towards all parties. Without criticising the management of those who in former political campaigns have been selected as chairmen of the democratic state riral cawimittf, w have no hesitation in expressing the belief that the selection of Mr. Bush was very wise and politic. Mr. Bush has both the time and ability to make one of the mot intelligent. spiritod, systematic and success ful campaigns ever made in the state. He can have but one ambition that of elect ing Mr. Gearin. Let every democrat in the county con tribute his influence and effort to swell the majority which shall be given the demo cratic nominees for county officers. It is net enough to simply elect. We should roll up 300 majority, for in doing so we contribute to the election of Gearin to Congress and Judge Burnett to the Su preme Bench. Gearin' election means a democratic president. What democrat would be willing to see the national gov ernment in republican hands again ? The democrat of the Sixth Judicial dis trict have nominated Hon. W. M. Ramsey of Pendleton for Circuit Judge. Judge Ramsey is an able lawyer and the district will be assured the best talent in the state for it Circuit bench. Judge Ramsey was elected County Judge in Yamhill against an adverse republican majority ,and last fall was elected Mayor of Salem on the democratic ticket against an adverse ma jority of 300 vote. Simon (we mean Joe) says wig wdg.and the whole machinery of the republican party in Multnomah county is set in mo ticn in obedience to the mandate of the republican "Boss." For two years,8clf-re-specting republicans haw been denounc ing Joe as a Judas,and he does not seem to have denied it,but with this charge weigh ing him down, he manages to carry the republican party in his pocket for his own benefit. Mr. George Belt, of Salem, was renom inated last week by the democrats of this Third Judicial District for District Attor ney. Mr. Belt has filled the office the last two years very satisfactorily to the people, and it would oe best for all concerned that he should be continued is the office with whose duties lie has become familiar. Let us elect him in preference to a new man. How beautiful must be the feet of those republican managers who.in Portland, bad the audacity to put Dave Thompson and Joe Simon on the same ticket for the Leg islature. There is about as much harmony and good feeling between Dave and Joe, as bstwecn an anarchist and a Chicago po liceman. On next Tuesday the state election in Louisiana will be held. A full state ticket and legislature are to be elected. The re publicans have made a vigorous fight and claim they will win. They have had a very large "sack" furnished by the pro tected monopolies of the North and Last Democrats,though badly disorganized, feel safe. What astonishes the republicans is the fact that democratic wool growers from Eastern Oregon, who were on the commit tee on platform at the democratic state convention, heartily supported the resolu tion endorsing Cleveland's tariff views.For every demecratic wool grower lost there will be three republican stock men gained. Jacob Sharp, the great boodler of New York.is de id. TWO PICTURES. A richly attired lady whose whole garb attested the wealth which sho has at her rommitn.1, and the frown on whose face testified to the contempt for the poverty by which she had swept as she passed along the street, was seen to enter a store In Portland where she purchased a lot of jewelry amounting in the uggregate to $50. She remonstrated against the extortionate price which she said the seller had put on his good. He attempted to mollify her feelings by explaining to her that these articles were Imported from Switzerland, and that the Importer had to pay a duty of 10 per cent on them before they could be landed at New York. That is to say $4.54 of the price of the goods was the duty the importer had to pay, and this was added to the price of the goods before she pur chased. Thus was this individual taxed $4.54 en a purchase of $50. This is one picture, but the reader may suggest that there is nothing very startling about it. But place it alongside of the following pic turc and judge by comparison. A scantily dressed farmer's wife was seen to enter a large establishment In Al bany where she asked to be shown some blankets, woolen shawls and woolen un derclothing. She selected articles amount ing to $50. It was hard to have to part with the last dollar that she had. But she had been saving it all summer, dollar by dollar, In order that she might purchase these Indispensable articles for winter use. The salesman, net with the same suavity of manner, but with the same purpose in view, told the woman that these goods had been imported from a foreign country and that a duty of 70 per cent had been levied upon them at the custom house, that is to say, $x.53 of the $50 which this farmer's wife paid for the goods was the duty that was paid on them at the custom house.and this was added to the pricu when sold to the farmer's wife. Now how do you like the two pictures ? The rich woman, who was abundantly able to pay, was taxed $4.54 on a purchase of $50. The farmer'-, wife, who expended her last dollar to protect herself and offspring from the cruel and unrelenting blasts of winter, was taxed $ J0.5S on her purchase of $50. This is one of the beauties of our robber tariff. How do you like it ? If you are so heartless and inhuman as to be pleased with thls'-inhu- inanity to man," then vote for Binger Hermann for Congress next June, as he favors and promotes this infernal system of tariff robbery. If vou despise this "in humanity to man that snakes countless thousands mourn," then vote for John M. Gearin. ho will "fight until the last armed foe expires" to blot out thU robber system from our statute books. A PROTEST. "AH earnest and conscientious republi cans deprecate the style of politics which was too apparent on the surface of .Satur day's convention. If quiet acquiescence in the methods in vogue is indulged in, we shall sooa have in Portlasds Boss Tweed or Chris Buckley .from whose authority er dictation there is no appeal, and if anyone dare question the right of the few to' dic tate to the many, he will be drummed out of the party as a renegrade or "kicker." Portland A'rtvs. The above, from the Xeu.-s, shows very faintly the feeling among self-respecting republicans at the "ring'1 method used in that citv in making nominations. Before the convention was held it was currently reported that the ring had entered into a deal with the Oregonian, whereby that sheet was to be allowed to name three or four of the legislative candidates in con sideration of its support of the ticket. But what can be thought of the Oregonian sup porting a legislative ticket headed by Jo Simon ? It seems to us that nothing but a deal of the kind spoken of cydd have brought the Urottomtan down to such depths. REITBLICAX STATE CON VENTION. The Republican State Convention met in Portland Wednesday and nominated Hermann by acclamation for Congress, Judge Lord for Supreme Judge. H. H. Hewitt, of Albany, for District Attorney for this district. Mr. Hermann's and Judge Lord's nominations were expected by all. Now for the contest. Republi cans claim from 3000 to 5000 majority in the State, leaving little hope for a demo crat. CHKKKISM NEWS. The democrats of San Jose and Modi -to. Cat., elected their city tickets last Monday. San Jose ha heretofore been strongly re publican. Albany, New York, went dem ocratic by 3000 majority, the democratic majority has usually been 500 to 800. Jer sey City elects Mayor Cleveland by 5000 and Hoboken elects an independent dem ocrat against a republican. The city has heretofore been republican. Tariff reform is telling. Get out of its way or be crush ed under its wheels. nrrfir;.wi,oi k.T For a week or more there has been a deadlock in the lower house of Congress over a bill that provides for the return to states that paid it a direct tdx that was levied by Congress during the war. Some states paid the tax and some hav e not. This btll provides for a return of the money to the states that paid it. Oregon paid $350,- 000 and will get this amount if the bill passes, i Plainview, Or., April 9th. Editors Democrat : . I took quite an active part in the demo cratic primaries with the hope of securing my choice for Clerk and Sheriff. I failed in both, but I do not intend to go off and help elect the republican candidates. That course would be unmanly and undemo cratic. I propose to do all in my power consistent with honor and fair dealing to help elect tho democratic nominees. If I should help elect any republican candidate the republicans would crow ovr my head in an hour after the election that it was a Blaine republican victory. Cleveland ha given us a clean, honest administration, and I propose to help strengthen him by helping to elect the whole state and coun ty ticket. Farmer. The Oregonian which, in former year6, has denounced in scathing and v igoroue terms the "robber" tariff laws,is now doing ail that it can to prevent any reduction of the tariff. That paper is nothing.if not in consistent. Brigadier General George Crook, the Indian fighter, has been nominated by President Cleveland to be a Major Gen eral in the regular army. Good. We may be in error.but we feel sure the Mills tariff bill will pass the House either in its present or in a modified form.
