FRIDAY .JULY 21, 1882 TEMPERANCE DEPARTMENT, i i 1 .' t - irssrs KDITKD BY TUB Women's Christian Temperance Cnian H8ITH Tr.nrrB.4NrE. Christian women eugaged in the great work of temperance, while they regard the liquor evil as ene of the ohief works of the Devil, remember that the "Son of God was manifested that ke might destroy the works ot the Devil. Christianity proposes a war of extermination against aU sin, whether in the individual or nation. When introduced into heathen lands, it makes no compromise with idolatry, supersti tion or tyranny. God must be worship- "I i . i i a a, trutn have influence, and love pre vail. So in all Christendom every form ot evil U combatted by bible prin- moles which sooner or later must tn- nmph gloriously." itmn tne memory ot tn-we now living the practice of duelling was re a a aa . aa ffarded as mental to the maintamance of human honor. Presidents, Govern ors, Senators and representatives a) gave it countenance. But when the pulpit and press uuited to throw on this dreadful sin the full light of chris tian truth, all its hatefulnesa and wickedness were revealed, and the nobler sentiment of the nation abolished it forever. numan slavery was once so inter woven with the government, its laws m, . . 1 " . . . . i custom ana interests mat it seemed impossible to ex terpate it. But before the advancing light of Christianity the conflict was irrepressible," and the sin htd to ye dotrn. Towering now above all other evils of our land is that of intemperance- Supported by law, appetite, custom and greed, some think it an impossible task m. a t wi remove n. we nave only to re member that "truth is might? and aur. prevail" that chtiatianity pro oses no toleration of any iniquity; and that God is on the side of right, to be as wared that tue great day ef deliverance it drawing nigh. The women's christian temperance movement vests its hopes on the everlasting truths of the Bible andissureof final victory. An in z . . . jqiiuy aicu carries wito it tno sncn lice of every earthly interest, destroy ingbody, soul spirit of the unhannv victim, and spreading wreck, ruin and death over all the land, must bo dow before the biessad light of Goapel tem perance. Already the signal notes of vic tory come up from various States of our country, and others are catching the glorious inspiration and the impend; ing crisis is again at hand. Oregon is destined at no distant day to take the common sense, just and righteous posi tion of entire prohibition of a traffic so unstatesmanHke, unpatriotic and wick ed as in that involved in intemperance. We depend much on he pulpit and the press to "cry aloud and spare not' shewing the people their sin in this respect, till signal victory comes. CHISEAE S tTI Bi U TIO. It 13 remarkable, coandered hour gen eral kas b sen the debate over the prop ositioa to grant privileges of citizenship to Chinese persons, that some of the courts have iilegaily attempted to nat- uraliza Chinamen. Two Chinamen were alleged to have been admitted to citizenship yesterday by a Philadelphia caart. Tne original naturalizatien laws extended only to free white persons. In 1870, it was propoaei to strike out the word "white." This was opposed by congressman, who were not in favor of admitting Chinese to citizenship, and alter some debate, naturalization la 8 a ' were, by express terms, extended to aliens of African nativity, or perbons of African descent. Ia 1875, some fur ther question having arisen, the statute was amende! to read as follows : "The j provision of this bill shall apply to 1 aliens being free white persons and to aliens ot African descent." Thna the i law stands to-diy, and as Chinese are ! net free white persons of African nativ-' ity or desceat,k is clear that all so-called naturalization issued to them are null j and void. Ar. Y. Times A HUT FOa (IE FEE DBIXKEits. While "dining out" one d ty recently the coffee, which, though the last was by no means I he least of the good tntngs iurniaue-ij was so unusually ex-: ke a . . J 1 caiient that it was the subject of gen eral remark, and a word in the ear of the charming hostess after retiring to the drawing-room, called forth the fol lowing explanation of how the good re sult was obtained: The coffee furnished was a clear amber in color, rich in flavor and delteiously aromatic. To give th3 hostess' method a fair test, it will be no more than put to don one's apron and adjourn to the kitchen The coffee to be used is Maracaibo and Java, equal parts of ejoh, finely ground. One large cup of coffee, one cup of cold water, one well-beaten egrg, mix tber oughly ; add four cups of cold water aad place it over the fire. After it reaches the boiling point allow five minutes to finush the process; strain and serve imtnediiitely. This seems a very simple process, but in the handd ot a servant, if allowad to boil too long, it would be simply spoiled. Tab room in the Franklyn Cottage, Elberon, in which President Garfield died, ia closed ani drapod heavily in mourning. In this condition it is stated it will always remain. mv. of ;r.ir Rr.ro rk aid itkk The love-makings o.f men of genius before and after marriage, with or with out it, are tempting subjects ol inquiry, and all the information of this tort we cn cet. if it sometimes doea no more ' than atmiie an idlo curiosity, may be, and generally is, as iustruotive as it is entertaining. With fuller information than we have along the private rela tionships between Socrates and Xm- tippe we should understand better than we do the public work of the great ather of Greek philosophy. A flood of light, which would otherwise be wanting, ia thrown on the mystic scholasticism of Abolard by the extant records of his dealings wrth Kloiwo. If as much weie known from their poims of view of Beartice and Laura as we know of Dante' Sand Petareb 'a written nf them. nerhaiw our estimate of the men's manhood would be some what different from what it is. though our admiration for the oets poetiy might remain the same; and for and au thentic biography of Anne Hathaway all but the more pedantic Shakespear- ans would be willing to surrender two or three of his less memorable plays. Cumins down to our own century, It will suffice to hint at the scientihc vain nf the little that has been uts closed respecting Clothilde de Vaux in elucidating the position of Auguste Comte as a great teacher. Evety where nd tri a man's worth must be gaged to some extent, though only ta nan. bv his domeslicitr. Some of the i j - best work dene by men of fcmall pri i-atA worth. A man of genius is not to be judged by ordinary standards Aoentricitr. The duties it imposes on its possessors may make it their duty to neglect duties imposed K K.iiii. or something mores authoritive than custom, on com mon folk; and their highest virtue may consut of or net be inharmonious with disregard of conventional virtues. But for all that men are men before they are anything else, whether poets or philosophers, waniors or statesmen; and among the fundamental conditions of human life the instincts that lead to love-making and marrying are bard- lv less fundamental than those that J oblige statesmen, waniore, philosophers poets and all such 'prodigies to eat and sleep pietty much as plowboys do. If the common laws of human life are varied from, there uiuat be reason for the variation, and reverting to men of genius ir. is useful to knew, not merely what variation at all, but yet more bow it affects their atandiug and influence in the world. 1 111 .n. on !.u. trios.
