A leading Republican paper urges that when the Republicans come into Kiwer again in CotTgress they should make a new Stale out of East Tennes see, "which will be h substantial and permanent gain" to the Radicals 1 But this little trick will never 'Wnir." . In the first place the Republicans will not again have the ascendancy in Congress, and, in the next place, if such n calam ity should occur aud they should hatch out their new East Tennessee State, it would go fcquare back on theni, like West Virginia did, and the Democracy would get the "substantial and perma nent guiu" to be derived from the pro posed new accession. We don't think the Radicals . want any more experiences in this line of po litical jugglery. It don't " Pan-Handle" for them I A MANLY I'RIOfl HOLpICB. Ex Governor Chainborlain of Maine is a Radical, and gallantly served intlie civil war ; but he is not a "bloody shirt" fanatic nor a hater of the South. In a recent Seoch upon the unhappy outlook for the future, in consequence of the desperate efforts of Radical lead ers to "fire the Northern heart," he ex- proaacd these noble sentiments: "There are some who will not have it that the war is over till they have their way. From much of the talk of lato one would think that all the toil and trial of the war was in vain, that these soldiers and Kailors of yours did nothing of lasting value, and that that glorious war and God given viutory must oount for naught, and that tho real way. to sivo the country ia to keep curtain sjli ticians in office, and that servile follow ing of them is the only test of loyalty to the Union. For one, I resent thif er vision of our inetivea ami thia belit tling of our achievements. I am in dignant at this insult to the memory of that great coinprny of noble souls who are martyrs iu anacied cause and a triumphant cause. Do nut mistake the issue. Your sous will not have died in vain beuAuse the Southern States are brought back into the Union, and send their bnt turn to represent them in Congress, even though they had tbe eouragn to wield the sword instead of the pen iu the time of mortal struggle. Men who freely joured out tbeir hearts' blood for their convictions, though wrong, are lens to bo feared than tbey who skulk in the rear anil gloat over the strife so long as they can fill their sockets with plunder, snatched alike from foe or friend." rtllAMK r 1MK "IVSttlTV MtMiK." We are adinunishrd tb it if we have nothing good to say of the dead to throw over their faults the mantle of charitable silence. I have no eulogy to write njsja the dead Chandler. It can be said that, jiersonally, be was consid ered honest, but .politically he was one of tbe Morton strijie, who contend that the end justified the means, lie was bold and grasping, ready to take by force, almost, any needed advantage for his party. It was bis dispatch the morning after the Presidential election in 187C, when tbe Republicans every where were acknowledging defeat, that gave John Sherman and tbe rest of the ballot tbteveti tbe cue from which the popular verdict was reversed. "Haves has 1S5 rotes and is elected," tele graphed Chandler, and the gang knew what it meant. That bold stroke re sulted in seatiug a fraud in the Presi dential chair.
