The youujj lady's pupils. without an exception acquitted themselves creditably, and gave evidence of tiio fact that Hiss Piper is a muinail instructor of rare talents, and has the faculty of impart ing bar skill to her pupii.t. Tha young lady herself, besides being a brilliant pianist, has very few equals as a vocalist, and was warm ly encored every time she appeared on the stage that evening. The audience seemed to go perfectly wild after her rendition of that beautiful old Scotch ballad" Ihjwn the Barn, Davy love. The lLafTenden Bros, are well known in this community and noth ing we could say would add to their already established reputation as vocalists. A. Haf fenden's isBersonation of a female was warmly applanded. Th same programme, with only a slight change, was given again on Monday night for the benefit of the Y. 1'. C. Association. Johnnv Dubruille has returned from Lebanon and aL'ain cone iuto partner- ship with Oren Eubarta. They are both good practical workmen aud always give sat isfaction. J. F. McCoy, who a fevr weeks ao liought a shop in Scto, has leased that business and come back to this city and bought an inter est in the establishment owned by P. M. Thompson. We hope that all parties will meet " with the best of success and never have cause to regtet the steps they have taken this week. barley Starr's Case. Last week during the ft8ion of Circuit Court Charley Starr,the convict, was brought before Judge Harding on a writ of h'jdican corpus, but the Judge ordered Sherifif Dickey to take the man to Gov. Thayer before he was discharged. Upon taking Starr down to Salem he was again thrown into the peni tentiary. From several little transactions which occurred while Starr was in the jail here, we are led to believe that there wag some dark lantern, work practiced to get him ; back iuto the penitentiary. The reason for it we can at rireaent oulv surmise. 1 J One evening last week a saloon keeper Jefferson discovered a hedgehog in the street near hia place of business, and giving chase he ran it into a wooden box and then carried box and all in his saloon, where the strange sanimal has been onexhibitionever since. Armstrong fell from the second step of the Btairway and striking on his head drove the skull against the brain with such force as I to cause him to be insensible for three or four hours. On the 4 th iust. two horsemen -N. Williams and Nathan Turnbull arrived at the Mountain House, having come across from Cache Crock on that day. They re port about eight miles of snow, commencing near Big I-ake, thosleepcst being about four feet. Two light wagons from this side of the mountains passed through the snow oa Fri day of last week, aud now any vehicle can go over. The bank was rather steep and tho dray going down first the horse fell on it and drove it into the mud and thus kept it front running on into deep water. Thure. Dofflemyer, tho driver, jumped down the bank ami cut the horse loose, and the old equine had a hard scramble to get up the bank. Mpertlag Parties. Last Saturday a fishing party consisting of W. B. Scott, Will Miller, Geo. Borkhartand W. A. Hill went from here to Ilinkle Creek, out back of Corvallis, and came back on Monday evening, bringing with them over two hundred trout. Their score was about as follows: Scott, 103; Mitler.OO; liurkhart, 25, and UiU 1. Last Tuesday D. B. Monteith and Nick Sprtnger started over the mountains for lilue Lake, taking with them several kegs which they txpect to fill with trout. Chureh of this city, delivered the Baccalaureate Ser mon to the graduating class at the Albany Collegiate Institute last Sabbath evening. Nearly all tin churches in the city omitted their regular Services and consequently the College Chaptl was filled to overflowing. The Doctor took his theme from tho parable of tho talents, atl dwelt on the advantages of education. Us was listened to with rapt attention and sesmed to make a deep im pression upon the (lass and the audience. . Net Forgotten let. It seems that Joe Vebber's old friends and comrades in the Portland Fire Department have not forgotten him yet, although he ha not lived there for maty years. Columbia No. 3 expects to have grand "blow-out' in that city to-day, and their Committee of Arrangements invited our1, now Chief to re spond to the toast "Our Visiting Firemen." Mr!
