lie Dfiiwttat. FRIDAY FEBRUARY 21, 1879. s"HE FAKMEB'S Ml TV. One of the principles of tho grange is to strengthen the attachment of the farmer to the farm and to in crease tho attractiveness of home. If farmers wish to Induce their bright, active sons to remain on the farm, they must show an active laith in the business themselves; tlu-y must indicate by pronounced measures that tjtkey believe in the farm and admit no superior calling in the comparison. When a farmer becomes thoroughly aroused to- the imjHrtauce of better seed, belter 1m. piemen ts, better cultivation, and, in fine, of Utter methods throughout, in such an individual is to be found a firm supporter of farmers' organi zations for mutual good. A good farmer is always anxious to know more, while many a poor, ahiftleBS frmer is laboring under the delusion that he already knows enough. . One can never measure his ignorance or knowledge by himself aloue hs a standard. It is necessary to com pare notes with Ms fellow-workers in the same line of business. The low er tlie level which a man is willing to occupy, the less his range of vis ion, wirile as he steps up l.igher, his horizon broadens, new opportunities present themselves, new fields of discovery appear, and the individual becomes more comprehensive, more 1 intelligent and more successful. There is a pleasure in gaining infor mation, which is a stimulant to greater exertion. The more a man learns, tht greater his desire to ac quire knowledge. Few men are in clined to do their best without the fric tion of rivalry or competition. One energetic, enthusiastic, successful far nier is apt to leaven a whol neigh borhood with his sterling qualities. A few determined men can influence the tendency of a whole village. How important, then, that every tnf- nier-shonid make up his roinu to per- form well his part, to fulfil his duty as a citizen as well as well as the head of a family, to sustain and en courage, in ever so humble way, the noble art of agriculture. !. The present low prices for produce are extremely unsatisfactory and nn- renumerative to the farming classes, yet it isn't worth while grumbling aoout it. Ine great natural laws of supply and demand fix market val ues, and individual wishes are of lit tle account in this busy world. Let every producer see if ho cannot lessen the cost of production, so as to leave a margin ot profit, even at low 'prices. It is also surprising how much may be accomplished in the way of economy and retrenchment when one is forced to the attempt. 1 he grange organizations in the United States number 24,000. "Who can doubt that such an agency ig doing a vast arntunt of good in the country? Associated effort in the practical matters of everyday concern is elevating and advancing the ttrmerV iuterests throughout the ' land. No " farmer should rest content who is not connected with seme organization as a. club, a grange or agricutlural society. . Each indi vidua! owes it as a duty to the cause as well as to himself to put his ghoul, der to the wheel of progress, to assist in t-vt-ry legitimate way to elevate the occupation, to improve its meth ods, to enchance its profits and to as sert its dignity and position. . It is said that 500 pounds of a mixture of ashes and bone, there being 375 pounds of ashes to 125 pounds of bone, will produce as much wheat oats, barley or corn as 10 two-horse loads of stable manure.
