My experience in raising, a small crop of potatoes, less than 100 bushels annually, for twenty-five years, has con vinced me that early digging is the best and safest practice. By early dig ging, t mean very soon after the crop is ripe, which is terminated by the absence f life and greenness from the vines, . and their detachment from the tubers. We gather our corn, oats, rye and other crops when ripe. What reason can be offered for permitting tho potato crop to lie in the ground until there is dan ger from frost, or even a single week after maturity 1 There can be no im provement in quality, certainly not in quantity, after the vines arc dead and all source of nutrition cut off. Oa the contrary, they are liable to deteriorate in quality according to circumstances. Heavy rains are liable to full in the season of harvest, which do not improve thorn, but tend to the reverse while they are covered with mud that often adheres after being dried, giving the cook an additional amount of labor. The wire worm, in land where this pest abounds, will take advantage of late harvesting, and bore into the tubers an inch or more, injuring tho crop ma terially. Several years ago I had a few crops nearly ruined in this way, and found my remedy to be gathering them at once after maturity. If the rot has appeared, there is no delay on that account, no waiting for the "predisposed' one to rot, for the place in which the disease begins is the ground, and the only way to save them is to dig them out But the greatest care is used in assorting them; not a tuber is saved in the least affected, as all such will be sure to decay, wherever they may be. By following this prac tice, my loss in the cellar for twenty years has been exceedingly small. If those farmersjwho have lost potatoes by rot after harvest, and hence leave them in the ground for the "predisosr ones to decay, would assort with sulHcient care, they would find very few "pre disposed'' in the cellar, and would save many bushels that are left in the field, or their experience would not corres pond with mine. In the hurry of gathering large crops, many affected ones escape and find their way into the bin; and if there is a speck of discolora tion of the skin, the disease has begun. and decay is very sure to follow. After the crop is put into the cellar. it should be covered with blankets, straw, or anything that will exclude the light The sun, striking a bin of potatoes but a few minutes each day through the window carelessly left tin pretested, will ruin the exposed ones for cooking in a short time, and even a strong reflected light will injure them. Potatoes grow in darkness, and they cannot so well be preserved as by keep ing them in this, their natural condi tion. S. iS. C, in JSortA American Cultivator. FARMERS.
