gcmoaat. riUOAY JANUARY 21, 178 OFFICIAL PAPER FOR OREGON, eAVIt CONglKTEXCY. As sb illustration of how Uie Pres- iJsut's practice tally with liU nti Cutholio utterances we will here cite a few instances which will be readilj appreciated br Oregouiuns especi ally. At the Des Moines soldiers' reunion last fall he openly annulled the Catholics, charging theui with lieing enemies to our frie Govern ment atid oar free schools, an in hit lata Message he took special pains to hnrl a vicious stump speech at them, wherein he reiterated his Den Moines Utterances in even broauor language. But in what singular contrast with all these anti-Catholio bawlings is his oeurse in making appointments in Oregon! Jlem. 1st. He has re cently appointed Major Connoyer, (Catholic.) Indian Agent at the Uma tilla reservation, and turned over the Indian school there to the Catholic priests . and teachers. 2J. A few months ago he appointed Dan. Ma larkey, (Catholio.) V. S. Marshal for Oregon, rice Toting, (anti-Catholic,) removed. 3rd. He alto removeJ Henry Warren, (Baptist,) and ap pointed in his stead S. J. McCor miek (Catholio) to be t'. S. Tension Agent for Oregon. 4th. He has, van since the issuance of his last phillipic against the Cutholics ap pointed P. B. Sinnott (Cstholic) as Indian Agent at Grand' Conde Res ervation, end a priest is Chaplain and spiritual director of the Indians there, while the Sisters have full con trel of the Indian schools. f mention these facts with no intention to fight the Catholics, be cause we entertain no ill will towards them, but for the purpose of showing the utter emptiness and hollow raecksry of Grant's anti-Catholic sentiments. Tl.e foregoing state ments shew that one-half of the Federal patronage which he controls in Oregon is bestowed upon Catho lics; while the remaining one-half is doled out among such eminent Chris tians (!) as Bn. Simpson, Ben. Un dented, MeJoru:n Crawford, Harve Scott aid One-Arm Browu ! What a sweet pink of consistency the Great Ulysses is to be sure ! No wonder Bishop Haven and other Methodists want him in office again; he is doing so much for the proroga tion of the Protestant religion in the United States and is so persistently and effectively uprooting the Catho lics! Out upon suck accursed hypoc risy! TssrorMiEiTstaiiis ottoNciirse We find the following in the Washington correspondence of the Baltimore Gatctte of Ike '2'hh ult. "Lafayette Lane, of Orvgon, thi youngest Msmber of the present Hoase of Keprejentatives, is a hon of General Jot Laue, who, in 1H(0, was a candidate on the Breckenridge ticket for Vivo President. The Gen eral at present resides on his farm near Bosebnrg, Oregon, and, al though nearly eighty years of age, is as vigorous, mentally sod physi cally, as when be occupied a fceat in the United States Senate. Lufav ette Lane is a lawyer by profession, and previous to his election to Con gress served a term in the Oregon Legislature. Two years ago he was selected to revise the code of that State a task for which he was emi nently qualified. Mr. Lane is said to be an eloquent speaker, and, pos sessing industrious habits, will no doubt prove a very -useful and effi cient Member." Ax Ensoul, TisnrRNEMi. Grant has now again sent to the Senate the appointment to be paymaster of one Maynadier, who was dropped out of the army in 1870, and whom the fe-n-ate at its lost session would not con firm, pigeon-holing his nomination. Grant slubborniy persisted in his pnrpese of getting Maynadier Lack into the service, and appointing him again as soon as the benaiou m over. Last Winter he reduced to suspension a sentence of dishonora ble dismissal pronounced upon Com mander Quaeleebuth of the navy, a fallow who had been once before dis missed for disgraceful conduct. These sre two out of many instances of like sort since Grant came into power. The question will be immediately asLed, by an anxious public, will the Democrats, if they are restored to power, do anything towards reducing these enormous ciponditures. For answer we point them with pride to the new Democratic House of Repre sentatives which has already com menced the good work, and gives promiso of cutting down the cvponsos of tho government to the tun of ibout forty millions a year. Mr. Handall, Chairman of the Commit tee on Appropriations, sees his way clear enough already to save the forty millions, and it is probable that still more may be made. That will be good enough at any rate, Ferty millions saved by one session of a Deuiocratio Congress! when it has iiicisssed almost ut the sumo rate by every session of a litidical Congress! At this rate of reduction a few years of Democratic rule iu each Depart ment weuld clear tho country of debt, bring new life into tho Repub lic, peace would reign and prosper ity be general. And with this great end in view tho people will restore that grand eld party to power once mora. IN COXURIttti, In the Houae, yesterday, in Com mittee of the Whole on ths State of the Union, Hopkins of Pennsylvania, Chairman of the Select Committee on Centennial Celebration Appropria tion, spoke in liohslf of the bill, llu said; The National honor was involved in the suocess of the exhibition, and that thew ccsib.1 ho no extremity ol financial distress that ought to cause an American Cflngroaa to falter in voting an appropriation topresorve tho good namo of the Oovernmont, an National unity was valueless with out National honor, lteferrinp; to the National advantages of the cele bration, ho said that, one of these would be to show that Southern peoplo wore neither Dukes of Alva nor Spanish inquisitors, but were men and brethren. Tho spirit of '76 would breathe its influence on the people, and under that inllaynce all animosities ami nil angry weinorioa would fade away. Ilia pas:iago ol tho penning bill, by ths aid of those the sincerity of whose patriotism had besu unjustly questioned, would con duce to that consummation devoutly to be wished, Waddcll of North Carolina followed in a speech, reported as follows: If it was supposed that ths irritat ing discussion of Inst week would have driven Southern men awny from the support of this measure, ho sin oorcly trusted that the result of ths vote wcuhl only add another illustra tion to the many already givon of how utterly imposFihle it is for some people to understand and appreciate the spirit that animates other people. He and his associates aoqaitted their Northern broth ren of all responsi bility for that discussion. They had understood fully, for it was trans parent, the motive which underlaid the introduction of that subject, aud, attaching to that motive its exact vsluo, they limply looked down upos and passed by the whole subject. ThcT wished tbe disturbers of the public peace to understand that, not withstanding tho spirit exhibited, they were too good patriots and too sincero men to allow that spirit either to control them or to serve as an example for them. They wished to maintain the honor and character of the American Union, and they would do so if they were allowed.' One element in the House had not len heurd from in that dis cussion, the element of Southern sol diers in tho late war, of whom he was one. They had sal in silence and taken the 'fire which the gentleman from Maine Dlainej had opened on them, with no other feelirig than that of gratitude of having escaped from bo terrible an encruv as he I Blaine I must have been during the battles of the late war. If, now, when mat gentleman's hair wae silvering, and his natural force perceptibly abating. be could develop such intensity of spirit, bow must uis plume have waved ia the forefront of that conflict which had occurred at a time when hel Blaine wu young and strong and healthy. That element had not yet spoken. It could not be goaded into discussion; on the contrary, it hud exhibited a spirit which he believed the American people would not eeos forcel. It met a storm of hnte and persecution as the awan meets the billows with a breast of down. He knew souis gen tlemen who had leeu engaged iu tbe same cause with him, who hid not it tended to vote for this measure be foro thatdiseussion.but now intended to support it us to let an example of patriotism.
