city. We were one of the excursionist,
and would like to give a detailed ao
count of the entire affair, but we
couldu't do It Juatlce aud have not the
time uor apace at our command. Buf-
floe it to any that on Tuesday morning,
according to programme, the express
train, with two chartered can attachedi
left Albany bearing away the Fire
Company, the officers of tha JJnn
County Agricultural, Society, the brass
band and a large number ot Albany's
(air ladles all bound tor Portland to
participate la the celebration of the
22d anniversary of Willamette Engine
Co. No. 1 of that city. At Salem we
gathered up quite a number of persona
among whom were Gov. Orover, and
Hon. J. H. Hackieman. After passing
Aurora the Albany Braaa Band went
Into the rear car, occupied by tbe Gov
ernor, tbe ladlea and moat of tbe Un
man; and serenaded Hia Excellency,
who responded in a handsome and ap
propriate speech, paying the moat flat
tering compliment to Albany's beaut!
ful ladlea and gallant Firemen. The
writer of "these few lines" was called
upon and made a few dyspeptic obser
vations. Arriving at Oregon Cily, the
boys found Tony Noltner of the Enttr-
prite standing on the platfrom, and de
spite bis frantic struggles And piteous
appeals, they carried him into the can
and took him off to Portland., He
did look helpless and forlorn when be
sank Into a seat and ganped out to us
In choking sobs: "Mart, I am tetotally
ruinated, for I haven't left a hooter of
copy on the hook, and the coinpoeiton
were waiting for Insidecopy! He tele
graphed baok to the priuten when he
got to Portland o jet away from a
Patent Office Report till be got back,
Van Cleave of the StgUter was also
along with us, and he' and Tony were
the observed of all observers as they
marched up the streets of Portland
arm-in-arm, looking like the Siamese
twins or a couple of Roman Seuaton
In disguise. ;

The dinner spread at the rink was all
ail that could be desired, 'fables
stretched from one end of the large
buildings to te other, and were laden
delicacies and groaning under the load
of good wings they bare up.
, The collation closed with appropriate
toasts, responded to by Hon. H. W,
Corbett, Jaa. tfMeara, M. V. Brown,
Suubrick Norris, A. B. Hallock, 8. J,
Dryer and others. -
Tbe day closed with a grand ball at
the Rink, which was attended by sev
eral hundred people. -
On Wednesday our Albany firemen
and their ladlea were received and en
tertained most handsomely at the meet
ing room of the various fl re Compan le's
of Portland, when speeches, oasts and
general fraternal jolarity was tbe con
tinual order.
The excuniouiBts came home on
Wednesday evening's train, of course
considerably fatigued with their round
of enjoyment! for two straight days;
but they seem never tired of praising
the firemen, ladies and citizens of Port
land for the warm hospitality liberally
showered upon them while there.
that trip will never be forgotten while
one of ite participants lives upon the
green earth to remember with pleas
ure and gratitude the. generous Port
landers. Our boys are now only living
to secure an opportunity to show their
appreciation of the event In some more
tangible manner than In mere words
or set phrases of thanks.

As we were meandering down Ferry st
to the office the other morning a Oospel

and "Bruce" ran against her from a dlrec.
tion where she could not see him, jostling
her off the sidewalk Into the dusty road,
and the rook of disgust and hatred which
she gave him will haunt us to our dying
day. But "Bruce" didn't observe it; he
was by this time galloping off with a sort
of hall moon shaped roll of papers which
sue had dropped from some place about
her person, and as he crept under tbe office
with it we earnestly prayed that would not
prove unwholesome food for his capricious
and delicate stumack, and make much of
a bustle In his craw.

engraving is as follows; "Awarded to

The other Is Inscribed to "The Hose Boys,"

a fine lot of improvements at his grain
warrhouso, one of the greatest being that
of bringing down water from the canal and
using a wheel to furnish the power to ele
vate grain. He furnishes ascks snd stores

Firemen's Reception. On next Mon
day evening Albany Fire Company will
give a reception at the Opera House, to the
ladies of Albany and the friends of the
firemen generally. All lady friends of the
Are boys are cordially invited to attend,
There will be a uniform patsde of the
Compsny in the streets before tho recep
tion. Refreshments will be served snd
the Albany Brssa Band will discourse mu
sic on the occasion. This event will give
our citizens an opportunity of attesting
their appreciation of that most excellent
and deserving Company.
A Couple of most superb wreaths, made
by the ladies of Portland, were sent up by
our excursionists last Wednesday, and
will be formally presented to Albany En
gine Company, for whom they are intended
next Mondsy night on the occasion of the
reception gigen to the Isdies of Albany by

lutions of thanks to the Portlanders for
their handsome entertainment will le

Nothing to note since our last Issue but s
decline In wheat. At this time there are
no buyers In the market, and more favora
ble advices from Europe as to crop pros
pects has caused a decline of ton to fifteen
cents a bushel. We can give no reliable
quotations for this market, as nobody
wants to buy. Farmers will have to watch
the signs of the times carefully, aa every
thing is now unsettled.
