Many of the readers of the Demo crat will doubtless remember a color ed barber, named Johnson, who former ly lathered and shaved, in Albany, and subsequently moved to Salem. Well, it seems he has followed in the foot steps of tile illustrious John Hippie and In a mad tit of "early Indiscretion" and perturbed state of mind, aban doned his lawful wedded wife fo' God and wandered out "into the wide, wide world" with a female Lothario who won his susceptible gizzard from Its true allegiance. But here is a card from the Salem Recordot last Monday which explains more fully the perfidy of this colored Imitator of our perturb ed Senator ..'- ... , V. rv- BaLBM, Jan. 24, 1875. MR- Editor: A short time before .the State Fair, a young-oolored lady came to this city from Grass Valley, California, representing herself to be a hair-dresser. . Being rather stylish in her appear ance, she captivated several colored geriw of this city, among whom was my husband, Mr. D. A. Johnson, This-fascinating "brunette" plied her blandishments so successfully that my husband, forgetting his marital vowsj has left bis wife and family and "sloped" with her to Portland. Mr. Johnson is, I learn, soon to ap ply fora divorce, so that he can many this charmer. The name of the deceitful syren is Goriiimr Boalman; and, as she has been successful heretofore In causing several separations between husbands and wives, I hereby warn all married women to look out for this dark skinned female Lothario. These are just the sort of "scraps" we like, and we Invite our young readers in other parts of the country to try their hands in the same way. Don't be afraid. If every sentence isj't perfectly rounded and every word according to the strict- est rules of orthography, we will cor-i tect It all up and make It look and read well enough. But here is our 'Sweet Homers " Hung-Lung Company (the Greefi Horn Chinese ditch diggers) froze out and emigrated last Saturday. Center Grange, No. 67, of Sweet Home is tu have a new hall. The hoodlums of this necko' woods have a literary society where Webstera and Demostliones are wont to congre gate and air their book larulii.1 j Beef and mutton are dear at present, I with a chance of a fall before Spring. We huve had a very pleasant winter j up here, so far, with the exception of: about three inches of snow on the 12th Inst. The "Sweet Homers'' are In perfect health and all ready for their rations at least three times a day. No doctors need apply. Through Much Peril- Abe Hack leman arrived iu this city from Oilm en, last Friday. When his m Thurs ton, was so very ill, two or three weeks ago, a telt'grani was sent to the Dalles and a courier engaged at that place to go -to Ochoco after Mr. Hackleman. The courier started just about the be ginning of our late severe weather, and uearly perished before reaching O dioco, where he found Mr. H. and they both started ioi the Dalles, ar riving thsre more dead than alive in about ten days from the time the cour ier had started out. Mr. Hackleman was so anxious to reach home that he put off almost immediately down the Columbia, on trull, In company with several other persons, and the weather was so severe that but for the friendly hnunes sparsely situated along the route they must have perished In the storms. Several of the party had their hands and feet badly frozen, but Mr. H. escaped with but comparatively little suffering. He marie the trip from the Dalles to Portland in about three days. He was rejoiced to find his son slowly convalescing with a full hope of Ills ultimate recovery. Accident to a Citizen op Linn. From the Salem Record we learn that on Saturday last Mr. Washington Lines who resides a short distance from Mil ler's Station, Linn county, met with a severe accident by fulling from a rail road trestle near Jefferson. The cir cumstances are these: Mr. Lines was coming to Jefferson from' his home and wlille upon the long trestle he heard the up train, and stepped upon one of the long stringers at the side of the bridge to get out of the way. At the end of the stringer was a barrel of frozen water, Mr. Lines was leaning against the barrel when it gave way and he was precipitated to the ground, a distance of 25 feet, breaking the right arm near the wrist, dislocating his thigh, and bruising him otherwise. He was fonud by Mr. Jacob Conner, who happened ia be passing shortly after the occurrence, and taken to Jef ferson here his wants were utten.led to by Dr. William Smith, of that city. Editorial obwr vatlona, etc., ete. - Last Saturday evening, in company with several Brethren of the Mystic Tie fiontliis city, we made a trip to Lebanon, over a rough and rugged road so to speak. The occasion was the annual installation of the newly elected officers of Lebanon Lodge No. 44 A. F. & A. M. Arriving there about 5 p. M., after a three hours' ride, we found the village alive with "Morgan killers" and their families all come to enjoy the annual reunion and sea son of refreshment. The following officers were publicly Installed In- the presence of a crowded hall of specta tors, R. Cheadle, W. M.; E. Keebler, 8. W.; R. McCally,1 J.' W.; Jos. L. Cowan, Treas.j C. B. Montague, Sec'y; Geo. F. Burkhart, 8. D.; A. B. Griggs, J. D.; Jacob Oberhaltzer and P. Lelu berger, Stewards; M. Snyder, Tyler. At the close of the Installation cere monies a sumptuous feast was partaken of in a large hall, to which nearly two hundred persona did ample justice. Tills supper was prepared by Mrs. Comptou, and the well provided table, with Its most excellent prepared edi bles, spoke volumes in favor of the amiable hostess" culinary taste. (Of course she isn't responsible for the rather questionable manner in which the committee on refreshments sup plied her with a sufficient number of chickens for the feast.) , After the supper had been partaken of, two large halls were found, well warmed and lighted one of which was appropriated by those of the youngsters who desired to "trip the light fantastic," and the other one was occupied by an equally Jolly orowd of children of a larger growth" who amused themselves with choice Instru mental and vocal music, old-fashioned games, plays, ete. making the merri est evening we have witnessed for many a day. For real jovial fun and warm-hearted sociability, commend us to the Lebanoiiltea every time. We were surprised to observe the rapid strides iu the line of improve ment made by our "Athens of Linn" since our last visit to that place a few munthsugo. Weobserved a full dozen of new houses which have sprung up, us it were, almost in a night, and all seem to bo occupied either as business houses or dwellings. Among the resl- dunefs recently built the most promi nent is that of Mr. Milton Snyder, which will compare favorably in arch itectural design and finish with our best Albany residences. The new livery stable of W. B. Don loil is a model of neatness, and is an ornament aud credit to the town. The stores of J. L. Cowan and Mon tague & McCally are fully patronized, uud deserve to be, ns they are kept by the best fellows iu that burg. Mrs. Wheeier has a neat aud beau tiful little millinery store. Mrs. Co upton & Daughter also have tt handsome millinery and dress mak ing establishment which they adver tise In this week's issue of the Demo crat. We commend those ladies to our feminine friends In that vicinity. Lebanon Is fast approaching that in teresting size when it will be knocking at the door of our Legislature for mu nicipal honors anil dignities. 'Squire Montague had a vagrant In dian before him last week for stealing chickens, but the gushing hearted and sympathetic 'Squire knew how it was himself and let Mr. Lo off with a gen tle and tearful reprimand. One of the Lebanon vounkers nt the sociable Saturday night tried to kiss a pretty girl while the candles were be- g lighted, but wo heard a thwack in the dark that didn't sound like a kiss (that ia, if we know ourself,) and when the ligh.s were struck we observed that the aspiring youth hud a mighty red ear, from which sign we took it that that girl wasn't that sortof a hair pin. Lebanon Academy Is running under a full patronage and Is said to be a suc cessful and popular institution. ' Lebanon has two first class bands, viz: The brass band, led by Prof. Compton, and the tin pan band, engin eered by Prof. Cowan. Each leader was recently presented by a beautiful and appropriate testimonial of nllec tionate regard by the grateful and ap preciative populace. The Masonic Fraternity own a large and commodious building, the upper part of which Is used for their hall aud the lower story Is rented to the Grangers for similar purposes. Both orders seem to be flourishing and pop' ular. . Editor Democrat: . Thinking that you would like lo hear from this part of God's earth, I will endeavor to give you a bird's eyo View of our future prospects In as brief a ir.anner as possible. Buck Head City is a thriving little place consisting of one dwelling, a small store and black smith shop. The proprietors are good fellows, but they keep nasty stuff at thtlr store. By-the-way Buck Head is situated on Ame's Creek not fur from Judge Settle's saw mill. The saw; mill hasn't sawed any lumber yet for'j the logs went off; but the proprietor thinks he will be ready next wiuter If we have a wet spring. The chances are he will saw a right smart chance of lumber. A little farther up In Sweet Home Vulley, J Hughe's City. It'. was a thriving little town until Sheriff Rice came round collecting his pesky' taxes. Town property wus loo lilgn, and the proprietor swore he hadn't lost any town, and away went "Coley: and tho bouuds." Nevertheless, the city still lives. The town consists of one dwelling, one store, post office and feed stable. By-the-way the proprle--tor Is a business cuss." He keeps store, pulls teeth for Z5 cents; tends post office and Is studying law; besides' he is running a Literary Society at Sweet Home school house and Is edit ing the Sweet Home Literary Compan ion. Mr. James House is running a boot and shoe factory there also; that is, he mends boots and shoes; and Center Grange holds forth up in the loft of the store In a doctor's office. The literary cusses have a debate at the school house to-morrow night. Question: "Resolved, that J. R. Her rin's Chinamen are a new essence to so ciety." I will try and attend and see how the thing goes, and procure a copy of the Companion for your readers, We expect the Yaqulna railroad will be finished as far as Green Horn this summer. A WORD FROM PEORIA. t J?xpKU, Joi.,23, 1875. Editor Democrat : In your issue of yesterday I notice communication over the signature of "Middleman" in reply to one Written by rue which appeared in the Demoobat of Jan. 1st. The writer very pertinently takes the liberty of criticising my version of the 'Peoria wheat transaction." Therefore,1 in order that I may exculpate myself from the charge of an intentional misstatement or perversion of facts, I am again forced to trouble you for a little space. The statement I made which seems to have exercised the feelings of "Middleman" to such an intanee degree as to cause him to grasp his "quill" and espouse the cause of truth is ih substance as fol lows: I said that the P. W. H. Co. charged but three cents per bu. stor age, whilst other parties charged five, thus saving to our farmers two cents per bushel on all wheat passed through their house. But somehow the "types" got it 25 cents instead of 2, as I intended to state.. This was indeed, something of a mistake. I noticed the error and could have Bent a correction, had it not occurred to me that the mistake was apparent to the most casual reader, as the dif ference between 3 and 6 did not in volve a very profound mathematical question. But farther, our friend wishes to know hpw we get our divi dend approximating 15 per cent, on paid up stook. Most assuredly, Mr. "Middleman," Ibis income is derived from the nett earnings of the house, and from no other source. . The five oents per bushel advance we got over local bids goes into the pockets of the producers where it rightly be longs." Had our farmers patronized you, Mr. '"Middleman," where would that advance have been? ' ' Please curb that insatiable avarice of yours friend, and meekly accept the situation. Farmers will profit by past experience, they will store their wheat in their own house and not relinquish possession of it until a sale is effected under their personal management, relying upon their own knowledge of business transactions for the successful maintenance and furtherance of their pecuniary inter ests. . Hoping that I have made a suffi cient explanation for "Middleman's" understanding (with the aid of a schoolmaster), feeling assured that his ponderous brain will now oool and be henceforth freed from the laborious task of longer working over mathematical questions that are so distressingly obstruse. Editor Democrat: Sir, I would bo very thankful If you would allow me an opportunity to an swer through your most valuable pa per a communication over the signa ture of G. F. Simpson, in which he acknowledges that he, as superintend of the Farmers' warehouse, was offered a bonus of one per cent. So much for that. Now, Mr. Superintendent, did you not make a bet of oysters that a cer tain firm in Albany would not pay morn than fifty-live oents per bushel for .wheat, und when approached was informed that wheat could be sold for fifty eight, and he, the proprietor, Im mediately drew an order on the treas urer of said firm at fifty eight, when you, Mr. Superintendent lost the oys ters? You said at that time that "they may give ftTty-elght cents for wheat if they wished, but you could got all the wheat you wanted for fifty-five." ' Now, Mr. Superintendent, don't this look like you were not doing Justice to stockholder No. 2 or any other stock holder of said company by not giving as much as other houses In town? - As It Is well known that you did all you could to Induce farmers to sell their wheat which was In the house at fifty-five cents, what Interest had you la this manner of prnceedure when you got the storage? Were you controlled I by Portland middlemen?
