i-itavntu. FftlDAY NOVEMBER 27, 1874. , , mim)-bi:auixo. . Tho prof osBora of Yale College, New Haven, Conn., have lately been entertained by the performances of J. It. Drown, 'the mind reader. The learned professors indulged in hiding coins, pencils, cards, etc. , in books, corners, and drawers. Brown was then placed en rapport with the hidee, that is, he took the hand of tho person who hid the article, or took hold of a line held by that per son. Brown, although blind-folded, would lead the individual to' tho ex act spot, and find the article Pro fessor Thacker purposely imagined a, pain located under his nose. Brown immediately placed his linger on the precise spot. Professor Marsh im agined a particular word, wrote it on paper, and gave it to another person. Brown spelled it out at once by pointing to tho respective letters in alphabet written on a blackboard, Tho venerable lix-President Wool- sey concealed a coin under some books, but Ins ramd was probably hazy for Brown could not quite find it, though ho came near tho spot. But when . put m rajvport with a younger man, Professor Whitney, Brown immediately found tho coin. Professor Brewer placed a tapo measure in a distant apartment; Brown promptly wont, blindfolded, to the ldaco and found the article. Professor I'isher gave a pencil case to Professor Johnston, who gave it to Professor Thacker, who ooucealed the article Brown led tho lattor di rectly to the snot, and found the pencil. , Professor Lyman held a paper on winch words were written iy Professor lusher, and, blind- foldod, Brown spelled the words without difficulty ! Having witnessed so many of these curious experi ments, it is to be hoped that the learned professors of Yalo will be able to explain how they are uono. ANOUIO WONUICR. It ii narrated that in Kinsman, Trumbull county, Ohio, there is a little girl often yuan who has devel oped a faculty ot seeing without eyes, Some months ayo an eldor sister was attacked with inflammation of the eyes, and the younger oue Attended her until she regained her sight. Tho little nurse was afterwards at tacked with the saino disease, and completely lost her sight. Her eyes were securely bandaged to exoludo the light, aud she was confined in a darkened room, liy degreos, it is said, she developed tho faculty of dis tinguishing objects without the use of her oyes. Sho could point out per sons, describe their attitudes and actions, and, moreover distinguish daylight from darkness. To tost her powers tlill itirther, a new book was given to her. fcjbo opened it, de scribed tho piotures, finally was en abled to read it fluently, her eyes all tho time being bandaged, (she has sinoo rooovored oculur sight, and her oyes are pronounced by physicians to be porfeotly sound. Bui strange to say, tho faculty of Boeing without them remaius, and when blindfolded and placed in a dark room sho can see with ease. The oaso has puzzled the' doctors. Thev nro unoertaiu whether the eyun have actually recov ered their power, or whether the faculty of seeing without tlioni has not survived eutiroly. Not many years ago this proteased power would have subjooted tho child to tor i turo. There no historical eases of allcgod second sight which have hitherto been treated as niythi. A severe lest of tho present ease would throw some light upon the utterly unintelligible scionoo which, lor the want of a better name, has been tsrmod psychology a torm nobody can define. Railroad Cond Atohs. Rail road conductors find It so difficult to induce insuranco oompaniua to insure their livos, except by the paymont of enormous premiums, that they have undertaken to insure ono another. Too seventh annual convention of the Kailroad Conductors' Life Insurance Association recontly mot in Si. It ia well known that many moro brakeinen, firemen nd engineers are killed iu the oourse of a year thau oonduotors the laltor having the privilego of soaiing thorn solvos m the last car uftor tho tiokots arc oolleited, and thus surviving the collision which smashes their subor dmatoi, Still, a oomluotor is always in danger ol sudden death; and mi bord la railway trains which cross the Wostorn plains, he is, moreover, exposed to tho hazards of tattle and murder at the hands of roaming Apaches or Iravoliug gamblers. -How to Manaob a Husband. A lady road tho following paragraph in a paper: u "A young wife once cured her husband of a disposition to ab sent liimscll Irom home at night by providing a good dinner, aud sujing to him afterwards: "Georiro. if vou find a sweeter spot thau our home describe it to mo and I will rival il i I die in the attempt.' . A kiss and few words comploted the victory."
