in the pulpit. Twenty yenrs ago;
yea, ten years since, a visit to the
church was but to hear the doleful
Round of the tomb drummed into the
ear. alona: with the comforting assur
ance that unless you belieted just as
the preacher believed, your portion
would be eternal helllire and damna
tion. To bo a preacher then, was easy;
the man of God, had only to learn
certain set forms of prayer, which
sometimes were interluded with pe
titions to Heaven to remove the un
godly from the earth, and this was
supplemented by a semon which was
replete in invectives and certain in its
tone regarding the future state of the
flintier, i There were no new ideas in
troduced. , Each pulpit pounder
deemed it his duty to slather up a
Certain amount of brimstone 'in his
sermon, and if possible to crcato n
panic amoiif the worldlings. When
possible'a 'revival" was introduced
and then was the harvest of the aver
age preacher. When he lacked in
common sense, he made up in volume
of voice: what was denied to linn by
nature he recompensed in the liery
denunciations he made of sinners,
Arguments were useless when the
Bulls of Bushan bellowed, and reason
Jed when the "power" was on the
preacher. Men of culiuro, refine
ment and scholarship laid aside their
gifts on entering tho temple. - To rea
son was to doubt; to doubt was a sin,
and tho sinners end was a surplus
bath in the reeking hells of immor
tality. ThuH was the world fed with
the husks of Theology, until came
the Delude of Doubt and then came
the Kefunnation. The clergy saw
that their power was departed and
that it was time for them to accoiu
.mudnU) Ihemsclves f o tho great influx
of light shed from Modern Science.
Hence there has been a steady advance
made by the priests during the lust
few years and great improvements
piade in their Lnnons. No longer
' do we hear tho rough, uncouth threat
enrags of a Uteral hell, but instead is
related the wonderful love of a Jesus.
"No lnnTf-r An thfi tliiindrvs roll from
Sinai, but instead we hoar the gentle
pleadings of tiie Sermon on the
Mount. No lunger does the devil
with forked tail and cloven hoof rant
over the earth, but wo hear only the
pleasant fannfligs of angol's wings as
they watch ovorourpillows. No mora
do we hear (except in isolated cases)
tho loud-mouthod fulminations of a
Jonah, but instead of that the mod
em nunistor appeals to the sober son
sos, lauds the beauties of Nature, and
from thence leads us up as willing
worshipers to .Nature s (tod.
Wo congratulate the clergy, as well
m the people, on this wonderful rr
formation, and whatever wo can do
' to uphold or strengthen them, the
ministry will find in Tjie Dkmocuat, a
willing helper. Oltmmca JJemocrat.

London Timet says:

are just reported from a village in
Madura, near Cape Comoriii. This
is surprising, for the object of the
recent discussion in Bengal has been
(to reduce the Juggornath cars to the
small size and lightness of those of
Madras, which arfl made of bamboo.
'The ; Bengal Government is now
issuing tho final orders on this sub
ject, after its correspondence with the
Government of India. Magistrates
of districts are instructed to toko all
steps necessary to prevent danger to
life or safety on such occasions, to
ascertain in each case that proper
precautions are taken by tho parties
concerned, and to see tiiat 110 olio IS
compelled to drag the car against his
will. They are warned to avoid tho
scundid of the past season, and not
themselves to undertake tho mechani
cal arrangements necessary to tiie
safe dragging of the car. The next
festival in June and July will, I fear,
show a repetition of the accidents of
past years, unless tho magistrates do
whiitthis order really means thcui to
do, nil 'press the 40-foot cars as a
dangerous nnisunco under the Crimi
nal Procedure (lode section, from
which there is no appeal.
