teith's wharf, at this city, and was re
ceived by the most enthusiastic cheers
from the large crowd of citizens who
had assembled , in anticipation of her
arrival. She started from Portland on
the previous rooming at six o'clock,
passed safely through the Locks at Or
gon City at eight o'clock, and arrived
at Sal cm at five P. si., where she was
welcomed by a vast crowd of citizens
of the Capital City. Leaving Salem at
6 o'clock, she arrived at Independence
about dark, where she tied up until
next morning, when she resumed her
journey, arriving at Albany as stated
above. After remaining about a half
hour here she again swung out into the
river and pursued her onward course,
arriving at Corvallia In an hour and a
quarter's run. Jere her appearance
" was again signalized by loud huzzas
from the gratified populace who had
assembled to witness her arrival. She
left Corvallia at 11 A. M., and arrived at
Harrisburg at 6 p. M., where she was
greeted with boisterous applause. Here
she remained over night, and during
the evening a pleasant party of ladles
and gentlemen of. that city assembled

and enjoyed the fleeting hours fn song,
conversation and general hilarity. On
yesterday morning when the writer of
this left Harrisburg, to return by rail
road 10 Aioany, sne was loading witn
wheat and expected to scart on the re
turn trip by noon, and last night when
we went to press she had just arrived
at this city.
We have only space at this late hour
to give a short description of this ele
gant vessel. , She is 140 feet long, 23
teet and 4 inches berm. has a carrying
capacity of 404 tons, and draws fifteen
Inches of water on an even keel. She
has nine staterooms capable of furnish
ing sleeping accommodation for about
30 passengers. All of her upholstery,
furniture ami appointments are of the
latest and neatest patterns, and her
crew are all gentlemen of the first wa
ter. .
A large number-of passengers and
invited guests were on the boat during
this trip, among whom raa be men

M. King, Secretary, and a committee
consisting of I. M. King, 11. G. Mend
and Mart. V. Brown were appointed to
draft resolutions of thanks to ths offi
cers of the Gov. Grover for courteous
attention during the trip. The resolu
tions were in due time prepared and
adopted and a copy of them presented
to Capt. Holman, by TP. Lair Jill, on
behalf of the guests. Following is a

; During the time of the late flood of
tho Santiam, your bumble twrvant was
aroused from his f lumbers at the dead
hour of daylight with a request tlmt
he would "loan a hand" In assisting to
secure a large collection of saw . logs
belonging to Mr. Smith, the proprietor
of the saw mill at this place. We
complied with the request, and while
"fishing around" on the rafts, tae
"boom" 'confining the logs suddenly
parted; whereupon about one hundred
and fifty dollars' worth of logs Imme
diately set out on a reckless voyage of
investigation perhaps toward the north
pole, and we simultaneously set about
discovering a north-west passage to
Jefferson, and found it. The remain
der and principal portion of Jlfr.
Smith's fine lot of logs were saved by
the combined exertious of ourself, the
mill hands aud providence.-- Now we
think Mr. S. ought to bo under , many
obligations to us for our kindness in
assisting him in his hour of need,
Perhaps ho is; but he never mentioned
cigars nor lager. Another raft of
about thirty logs which was moored at
the lower end of town was also swept
away by the resistless force o the
"raging Santiam." We were unable
to learn who it belonged to, as neither
Mr. Smith northe loggers seem willing
to claim it. ,
; A small dam near the grist mill has
been carried away twice lately occa
sioning considerable loss of time, mon
ey and annoyance, as the mill had to
cease operations until reparation was

ber were present, among whom were
three stock-solicitors who went away
with a smile on their face,
na nearly if not quite all that were
present took stock in the Albany &
Astoria Farmers' Company.
After tho usual routine of business
the Club proceeded to elect by ballot
one delegate to attend the State Con-;
vention, to be held in Salem, April 10, j
1S73, which resulted in the election of
A. S. Looney. H e recommend that
each and every other Club in the State 1
do likewise, that the State Convention
may receive eulogies as did the Linn!
(bunty . Convention which has the
name of beins the most harmonious
and largest attended gathering that
had been seen in the Court 7ouse for
some time. Let us move slow but sure
in the plan that we have adopted aud
everything goes well with the Club In
District No. ii5.

of the report of my remarks, made at
the Farmers' Convention at Albany,
which appears in your isue of the 14th
int. Referring to the lar above
Tongue Point, known as the "og's
Back." you make me say "only eleven
feet of. water, save twice a month,
when the tide was full. Vessels load
ing at Portland were always anxious to
catch this tide and thus could only
pas over the Tongue Point bar twice' a
mouth." ( It bhould have been seven
teen feet of water at ordinary high
tides, and the tides are usually about
one foo: higher for one or two days
near full moon, and then again the
same number of days at new moon.
The freshets in the Columbia and Wil
lamette Rivers make no perceptible
difference, as Cathlamet Bay is so wide
the water has room to apread.

ORLKAXS FARMERS CLUB.
Pursuant to notice a few of the far
mers of tha precinct met and organ
ized by appointing Joseph Hamilton
Chairman and Alex. Crusvford
Secretary. The Chairman stated the
object of the meeting, which was to
devise means for building a ware
house at or near Orleans for the stor
ing of grain, anticipating shipping it
dircet to Astoria. Adjourned to meet
at the same p ace on Saturday, March
22d, for a fu.ler organization.
Oak Point, Linn county, Oregon.
A Stamijede fob Oregox. By re
cent letters from Iowa we learn . that
there is to be a perfect stampede from
that country to Oregon during the cur
rent year. This is occasioned by, the
continued pressure of hard timesand
the terribly inclement weather of the
past winter in that region. We are
told that in the neighborhood of. Mar-
shalltown, Iowa, forty fdmlliet were
to have started for Oregon on the 1st of
March, and in many other sections a
like exodus is looked for. We cannot
expect that all of these people will
come full-handed, prepared, to pur
chase homes and Invest in business en
terprises, and we should see to it that
all are cordially welcomed and given
every reasonable aid and encourage
ment in our power. There is room and
a living in Oregon for hundreds of
thousands of industrious, honest peo
ple. Let them come. '
Gone East of the Mountains.
Last Sabbath the train carried from
this city several persons who are going
to the "upper country" on yarioss er
rands. Dr. D. M. Jones goes for a re
laxation from business cares and in
quest of an elligible sheep ranche. He
will go to the vicinity of TTalla TFalla.
Mm. W. E. Howell and family go to
her relatives at Walla Walla,' ' where
she will remain during the summer, in
the hope f benefitting her fast failing
health, r Jetfrr Clay poof and wife are
en route fat Umatilla county, the home
of Mrs. C's father, S. M. Pennington.
Mrs. Claypool's health has been preca
rious for years, and it is with a view of
its restoration that she seeks the pater
nal home in Eastern Oregon. We ear
nestly hope that all of our friends''
brightest 'anticipations- of the future
may be fully realized. '

Entertjment given by Albany Col
legiate institute was greeted with a
full house and was much superior, In
many respects, to any previous one
ever given by that, excellent instltu
Hon. The progranimo was well ' p r
ranged and carefully rendered, there
being scarcely a failure upon the part
of any performer. The Salutatory, by
Will. Simpson, was eminently appro
priate and well doll verod. Tho song,
"Nellie Jliie," by Misses Ella Barrows
and Cora Irvine and Profs. H'arrcn
and Sox, was sweetly sung and receiv
ed with rapturous applause. The
"Oration" by QUI Irvine, was good,
but hardly well enough committed.
The piano solo, by itaggie Foster, was
pretty and well executed. The decla
mation, by T. P. Hackleman, was ex
cellently rendered. The quartet, "My
Darling has Fallen Asleep," by Missus
3onteith and Cannon and Jlessrs.
IKcbtlake and Darby, was a sad, sweet
song and was received by the audience
with decided manifestations of ap
proval. The conglomeration speech,
or "What Is It,' by Rob't Foster, was
highly ludicrous aud set the houso in
roars of laughter. . Tho College Jour
nal, read by J. T. Tate, was scarcely
what might have been expected from
that source, but we presume tho stu
dents are at fault more'than the editor,
as they should have contributed a
greater variety and higher standard of
literature for its columns Mv.Tnte is
a young gentleman of ability, and will
doubtless do better when he has had
more exiwrience on the editorial tripod.
The piano duet, by Misses Tate and
Brown was lovely, and well executed.
The tableau Queen Isabella present
ing her diamonds to Columbus was a
rare illustration of that noble net of
the noblest of ovcrcisns. The reclta
tlon, by Miss Jennie Hamilton, was
excellently rendered. "The Sea vs.
the Ijtnd," by .Vlsses Llbble Altnouse
and Jennie Conner, displayed rare le
Bcriptive powers on the part of its
composers and was handsomely read
The duet " Afother, O ulng me to
Rest" by Prof. H'arrcn and Miss Cora
Irylne, was a iH'autiful song and ren
dered in the highest style of the musi
cal art. The Oration, by Jas. Darby,
was an excellent original production,
and was well spoken. The Instrumen
tal trio, on the piano and violin, by
Mies Barrows and Brown and Prof.
H'arrcn seemed to be the crowning tri
umph of the evening, being loudly en
cored after Its first rendition. The
recitation, "Fits James and Roderic
Dhu," by Ml-s Llbbie Halbrook, did
full credit to the speaker and to Scott's
sweetest production in the line of he
roic verse. The farce " He are all
Teetotalers" was the funniest thing
out and literally took the house by
torm. A little shaver sitting near us
ejaculated "Bully!" at every Majre of
the piece, so we presume that supi-rla
tlvc adjective will fully answer for our
description of that laughable force.
The duet by Miss Ella Barrows and
Prof. Warren, was superbly sung. The
tableau, "Innocence," was very pretty;
land the Valedictory, by Mbw Clara
Price, was a superior production and

The en
tertainment was, in fact, an eminent
success, aud spoke volumes Its favor of
the system of teaching pursued by the
faculty and the capacity for advance
ment possessed by the students of Al
bany Collegiate Institute.
War in Corvallis. Dr. Smith
tells us of a bloody battle between the
boys of Corvallis and the students of
Corvallis College last Saturday. It
seems that on Friday night the Col
lege students gave a ball to which
none of the city loys were Invited,
and this so incensed the latter that
they some time during the progress c f
the dance threw a torpedo Into the ball
room, which created for a time tho ut
most consternation and confusion
among the gay devotees of Terpsi
chore. The next morning the College
loys massed their forces and went on
the war-path in search of the torpedo
throwers. Approaching Frank Ray
burn, a young man of the town, they
accused him of the misdemeanor and
one of their number, named Peyton,
feathered onto him for a fight. Others
of the town boys having arrived upon
the scene, they and the College; stu
dents formed a ring about their chiefs,
and, drawing their knives, demanded
a fair fight. Then at it went Peyton
and Raj' burn, each fighting for the
honor of their respective tribes.
Chug! thump! fisticuff they went
for a few rounds, until at length they
clinched aud rolled upon the ground in
a savage embrace. Ray burn fell up
permost, but Peyton managed to get
bis teeth fastened on Rayburn's finger
and nearly bit it ofC While this mas
ticating process was going on, howev
er, the proprietor of the finger hooked
another digit into Peyton's Jaw and
began tearing the flesh in a fearful
manner, which process caused the bi
ter to raise his grinders off of that
finger Instanter. The noble art of
"fisticuff" progressed for some time
longer with varied results, when at
length Peyton, after having both eyes
closed with mounds a little smaller
than Jary's Peak, and having his
mouth filled with blood enough to run
a Turbine water wheel, concluded that
amusement was becoming monotonous
and signed a quit claim deed to his
share of that fight by ejaculating
"enough," Rayburn got np.and Went
for the other student's making swath's
through their ranks somewhat after
the style of McCormick's reapers, un
til his wrath and his vengeance were
satisfied, when he hauled off and laid
up for repairs. lie was almost as bad
ly damaged as "hU vanquished- foe ;
and In point of fact both of them look
ed like like they had literally "sailed

the Statu arc. not paid a farthing for
their work. It Is all gratuitous. .Tho
executive committee for Linn county
have purchased the subscription books
and done tho Incidental printing at
their own expense, and do not expect
to receive a cent in return for their la

work which every true son of America
