The ditch will have a gradual and easy natural fall from its source in the Sanciam to Jas. " Jr. Philip Lowe, of Tangent, Linn county, received the following letter from Gen. John Adair, of Astoria, last week : Astoria, Feb. 3, 1S73.' DkarSib: It gives me pleasure to acknowledge the receipt of your favor or the 25th ult., and to hear from you that the farmers of one of the most productive valleys of the earth have determined to emancipate themselves from a vassalage which, they have borne until patience aud forbearance have ceased to bo virtues. You have the right, and you lmve but to steadily pursue your purpose for n little while and every interest in our young and growing State will heartily hail your efforts. We cannot but rejoice, In our small and isolate! community, upon the Requisition of such allies. You farmers of the valley, with your stal wart arms, and tho banner of i truth and Justice in your hands, can drive the nail to the head with a single blow which we have been driving at for twenty years without striking It fast enough into tho public mind t3 hanir a doubt upon. , I have read your letter to several of my neighbors and they all, with one accord, clasp hands with you with one long, lou I huzza for tho furmers Of Willamette. Very sincerely your friend, John Adair, PEORIA. FARMCRW CXt'B. The club met and went Into perma nent organization on Saturday, Feb. 13, 18T3. , J. A. Portor in the chair. The committee appointed to draft a constitution and by-laws oftered their report, which was received by a vote of tho house, after which sixteen per sons signed their names as members of the club, among whom were some of the most substantial and Influential farmers Jn this vicinity. After go.'ng through tho usual rou tine of electing oflieers, etc., Mr. Jla ley oflered the following resolution: Ioired, Thai this club elect three delegates to attend the Farmers' Oni vention, to be held t Albany, Afareh S, 1?73. On motion, the reso.rition was adopt ed and the elub proceeded to elect by ballot which resulted In the selection of X. D. Jaley, D. C. Curry and T. I Porter as delegutes. The club instructed the Secrefury to forward a concise report of this meet ing to the Democrat for publication. After listening to a few siuted re marks from .Vr. Sumner, in regard to the duties of the farmers in protecting their interests, the club adjourned to meet on Saturday, March 1, 1S73. . F. A. WATTS, Secretary. X Wnxa HTIHM.HITE VENTILATED. Scio, Feb. 15, 1S73. Editor Democrat : Allow me through your columns to give a little airing to an article which appeared in the Pacific Christian Ad- rowKf, concermnff ine iicatn oi iiav Joah Powell, over the signature of W. F. Wet. lie says that Mr. Powell, although a Democrat, prayed for the success of President Grant and the Republican, Congress. Now we are taught in the Scriptures that we are to pray for kings and rulers, and all thoe hi au- f,,r " being a devout Christian, would pray resj.ient Orsnt and Congress not j for their success, hmvever but that j 00,1 would pardon the enormous crimes j Wilicll thpv -pr. mmm if finer in tlin ! 'name of liberty. This would seem Grange to Mr. U'est, he being as great a Granger to principles of Christianity a iir,g s to theology As to "taking a little whisky and being opnsel to temperance organiza tions," that is a plain and palpable falsehood. He was a temperate man 0f unrighteousness, he did not possess one a0lars worth of pronertv. isow, gentle reader, we pronounce Mr. West's correspondence a lie from beginning to end ; and when he said, j tl,e wind-up, "I write this in the in terest of Christian forgiveness," he uttered the most damnable falsehood that ever escaped the lips of man. This canting, whining, puritanical bloodhound of Zion had not the cour age to speak out until the old veteran of the Cross was dead; and when his venerated form was laid beneath the sod, and his ppirit basking in the smiles of his Redeemer, this mali nant, cowardly asa makes an attack upon his persona! character. ""I wrote this in the interest of Christian for giveness!" That 'sounds well for a man in whose composition there la no more Christianity than there is sancti ty in hell; a man who has stolen the livery of heaven in which to serve the devil. We would Just say to Mr. West, if he makes another such cowardly at tack upon the dead and that falsely we will give his personal character a little ventilation. There are a great many men in the "Forks of the San am" who are personally acquainted with Mr. West, and we have abundant evidence with which to ventilate his foul carcass. - And we would further say, had he been in this vicinity when that article appeared In -the Advocate and heard the bitter curses heaped up on his head, he would absolutely have had to flee at the hour of midnight to have 6aved himself from a severe cas tigation at the hands of an outraged and indignant people. The Rev. Joab Powell was an honor to all such scalla wags, liars and hell-hounds as this de ceitful, hypocritical pup. IFe would say to him, by way of advice, to- nver again, so Ions a God may spare, bis unprofitable life, desecrate the pulpit. It is a sacri ege and a shame to the name of Christianity. Meanwhile, we "poise our pen in midair" and wait to hear from the ,Rev. (oh, God! what mockery! Mr.'West. ' Nero.
