Pall Mall Gazette. September 13. A SAD CASE. Suicide of Aaterlran Girl In London. It was s'ated a day or two ago that the body of the young woman who drowned herself on Waterloo Bridge a few evenings since Lad been identi fied. Her name it appears was Alice - Blanche Oswald, and she was with in a few days of her twentieth year. At the inquest last night before Air. Laugham, the following letter was put in and read: 178 High st. , Shadwell London, ) September 3, 1872. ) - The crime that I am about to com mit and what I must suffer hereafter is nothing compared to my j resent misery. Alone in London, not a pei ny or a friend to advise or lend a helping band, tired and weary with looking for something to do, failing in every way, foot-sore and heart weary, I prefer death to the dawning of another wretched morning. . I have only been in Britain nine weeks. I came as nursery governess with a lady from America to Wick, Scot land, where she discharged me, refusing to pay my passage back, giving me my wages, 3 10s. After my expenses to London I found my Belf in tbi3 great city with only 5s. What was I to do? I sold my watch. The jaltrv sum I obtained for that soon went in paying board and in looking for a situation. Now I am destitute, every day is a misery to me. No friend, no hope, no money; what is left? Oh God of heaven, have mercy on a poor, helpless sin ner; thou knowest how I have., stri ven against this; but fate is against me. I cannot tread the path of sin, for my dead mother will be watching ne. Fatherless, motherless, home ) have none. Oh. for the rarity of a Christian heart. I am now mad; for days I have foreseen that this would be the end. May all who hearsof my death forgive me, and may God Almighty do so, before whose bar I must soon appear. Farewell to all, to this beautiful and yet wretched world. Alice Blanche Oswald. I am twenty jears of age the 14th of this month. - The jury 1 returned a verdict of "Suicide while in a state of tempo rary insanity." A. TVEETCIIED WEDDIXO NIGIZT. The following sensational narrative appeared in a French newspaper of the 5th ultimo: "M. Guillaume was, two days ago, married to a young and pretty woman, with whom he was deeply in love. !Iri the evening, after a modest wedding repast, the newly married couple retired to their domicile in Hue Monge, when happy to to find themselves alone, they talk ed together until a late hour of the pt and of the future which 6eemed to 6mile upon them. While convers , ing, their lamp went out, and the young couple went to sleep without relighting it. They were suddenly awakened by a noise at the door just as daylight was commencing and they then 6a w an unknown individual ad vancing in a threatening attitude to ward their bed. 'I knew it,' he cried in a terrible voice, drawing a dagger from his pocket,, the stranger com menced an onslaught on the pair. A desperate struggle ensued, the conse quences of which might have been fa tal but for the interference ot other lodgers in the house, who were alarm- ed by the disturbance. M. Gill ume was .discovered lying on the floor, , pierced with seven wounds, two of which were serious, while his wife lay by his side, also in a state of insensi bility, though fortunately unhurt. The bride and , bridegroom, it was discovered ' subsequently, had been the victims of a most unfortunate mis take. M. C -, a lodger in the house, who occupied an apartment similar to that of M. Guillaume, but situated in the story above, Mad made - c mistake in coming borne, and thought that he had surprised his wife in an act of infidelity. The man had been, it was said, indulging in copious ; libations during the ', evening, and to this bis unfortunate error is to be attributed. '. M. O was arrested at once, and hopes are entertained that M. Guillaume's life . may be ' eaved." . WHAT HORACE GREELEY KNOWS -ABOUT , S WI.G M A C II I X E S ! OUR FAVORITE SEWING MACHINE!
