Last Thurs day about thirty men and a number of teams, began work ou theSantianiand Albany Ditch. Jr. Jason Wheeler, one of the Company, has also a number of men employed cleaning out the ditch already completed foflm Elkins' near Lebanon, to where it taps the river above. The party that began work Thursday is under the employ of A. B. Morris, of this city, who has ta ken a contract to construct three thou sand feet, a part of which is flooming, from Elkins -VTI1 to the open prarie thisside of Lebanon. This! contract embraces the heaviest part of the work. Mr. Morris proposes to prosecute the work on his contract with all possible dispatch while the weather is favorable. Another Absentee. Gov. Ben nett, of Idaho, addressed something over a dozen iH-rsons at the Court 7ousc in this city on last HVihu-sday evening, favoring the re-election of the man from whom he receives his bread and butter. It was previously announced that the Governor would sneak on the issues of the day. -He 'did no such thing however; his speech was a re hash of one of George L. Wood's poor est efiorts of six years ag, interlude! with an occasional stae joke which smacked s-ora rvli:tt of the outer limits of civilization. The people of Albany did themselves credit by suffering this hired man of Gen. Grant's to speak to empty benches. List of Jurors. The following list of jurors have bee n drawn to serve on the grand and petit juries during the term of the Circuit Court to convene in Albany on the fourth Monday of this mouth: Thos. Goodman, Jath ew Brysoa, Mulky Veruon, F. Shedd, J. 3J. Coon, H Turner, J. Xewraan, John Tet hero w, Strand. Froman, C. P. Hogue, Jesse Irvine, D " B. Craig, C. Cochran, S P. Arnspiger, Owen Barr. Ilouk and John Claypool. Maevelocsness Large.- On last -Monday an old gentleman, who resides i near the foot of the mountains north of Lebanon, came to town in a wagon in company with another man and for the first time iu his life saw the loco motive and cars. The sight struck the old pioneer with such awe and wonder that he actually fainted away, and it was some time before he could be re stored to consciousness. , Fine Fuhnitere. Whitlow & Co. have some of the most elegant bed room sets we have seen in this market. They are of ash and maple, with carv ed waluut finish, and are of the finest workmanship, and rcaiarkably cheap. The furniture in their establishment is all of superior material and manufac ture, and we would advise the public to call and inspect it. Highway Roeeeky. Sheriff Par ker received a -dispatch yesterday from the Deputy "Sheriff of Marion county, informing him that a robbery had been committed the day previous near Mon mouth, in Polk county, by two men answering the description of Brown and Reed, who recently escaped from the Linn county jail. No further par ticulars have been received. TFheat. 'Since last week the price of wheat has fallen from 62J to 55 cents. He have heard pt many of our farmers who have been compelled to sell at that figure. The European .market now rules the market in Oregon. When the farmers of Oregon learn that they are forced to' pay one half of the price of their Wheat to monopolies, they will know how to avert the eviL Gold Jedal. TLe Beaver 7osiery 3anufacturing Company, of Jefferson, Marion county, was awarded, a gold medal by the State Agricultural Soei ty for the best lot of goods- of their manufacture. The Company is still extending their business in the shape of extensive improvements to their already large establishment. The RftEK. Boatmen say that the river is lower than it was at this time last year. The improvements now go-' ing on are expected to facilitate navi gation on the Willamette to a consid erable extent but not to the extent that boats may be expected the year round hereafter. Justices Court'. Rather an inter esting trial came off before Justice Ca rotherson last Wednesday. L. Fan ning sued Brand for 179 on rent Poweil & Flinn for PI'S; and Hum phrey for Defr't. Decision in favor of Defendant.- . , A Fine CaseofIxstrumekts. Dr. D. M. Jones, of this city, recently pur chased, through the house of E, C. Hill & Son, of Folkers Bro's, of San Fran oJsco, one of Parker's Compact Ampu tating cases." The case containsall the instruments in use and cost $125. The San Francisco Circus, which has leen performing at the State Fair and in the lower part of valley, will be at Albany in a week or two. All that have seen it join in saying that it Is the best circus that has ever stretched a canvass iu Oregon. The r.-'ociiKtle fever is about to break out again in this eity. One of our employes has had a slight attack, ac- j ! compunied with all the symptoms, of i ; this malignant disease, and the people j may expect to hear of its becoming epidemic in the near future. Iist Friday night a bevy of beauti ful damsels were out serenading, and many of our citizens are deeply in debted to them for the soul-inspiring, heart-bustin' strains which they war bled under the windows of a select few iu a manner that would have made a nightingale hang its head and blush for very shame. Some dastardly wretch distributed a quantity of oisoncd meat on the streets in nearly every quarter of the city last Saturday night, and some of the finest dogs in the community have since died from the effects ot eating it. A large reward is o.Tered by the own ers of the decased canines for the ap prehension of the person who commit ted the of'ence. If the citizens sue ceed iu fillJilIS oat who done the dam age he will bt verj' apt to be dealt with in a pretty rough manner. I'KEsnyTEnY.
