The Pavilion presents a fine appear ance to-day, every department being creditably represented in articles on exhibition. A finer display of vejreta bles has never been shown at any Fair in the State. The quantity is not so great, but the quality is certainly with out a parallel In any other country than Oregon. Fine specimens of fruit arc to be seen, but the quantity and variety does no special credit to fruit growers. The Superintendents of the different classes met at the Secretary's office at 1 o'clock to select judges and receive from the Secretary a list of the articles entered in the respective departments for examination. As annonnced yes terday the opening address was deliv ered at 1 o'clock to-day. At half past 1 o'clock p. sr. the racing began and for the rest of the day the. track, the judges and the spectators' stands were the main centers of attraction. The first race, running, for three-year-olds, single dash of a mile, purse $200; first premium $150, second premium $50; three to enter and two to go. George Ross entered "Hiram Abift," W. J. Tindall entered "Bill", and Ross en tered "Unknown." "Hiram" and "Bill" were the only horses to put in an appearance, and at the appointed time they were let oft iii good style. This nico was very exciting. The hor ses ran lapped from the start and came out within one-fourth of a second of each other, "Hiram" winning in 1:31. The next race was at 2 o'clock; trot ting, two in three, for horses that nev er beat 3:30; purse $100; first premium 57o,vsecond premium $25; three to en ter and two to go. Jown Cowdell en tered ,"JSuip,". C . Aanis eutered "Minnie Parton." and Tennant enter ed "Dusty Bob." The first heat was won by "Dusty Bob" time 3:07J; "'Snip" took the second time 3:14, fend ".Viiinie" took the thiol time 3:13, TJasniade it necessary to go another heat, which was won with ase by "Minnie time 3:12. At half-past 3 p. if. the last race of the day came oft Purse S-j00; first premium $350, second premium $130; three to enter and two to go; two in three, mile heats, running. ' Gird en tered "Buckskin," Ross entered "Tri fle," and somebody else entered a "straw horse" to make oj the race. "Trifle" won in two straight heata time 1:43 and 1:35. 'Buckskin's" time was 1:48 and 1:36. This closed the races for the day. TJie friends of the respective horses in each race man ifested their confidence in their choice by risking their money In almost equal sums at the pool stand and in private bets. Great preparations are being made for the great race of tha season, which is to come off at half-past 1 o'clock on Saturday, for the purse of $1,000. The contest will doubtless be one of the most exeiting ever had in the State. Albany is again to-night crowded to overflowing. The streets are still thronged at 1 o'clock this (Friday) inorninjr. Parrish's Hall is the scene of gay festivity, even at this hour, in the character of a dance In which both old and young participates witii about qual apparent pleasure. t FOCBTH DAY. The weather is still beautiful. There is no perceptible change in affairs since yesterday. About the same number may be seen aiwund the principle pla ees of resort.- This being next to the last day of the Fair, it is now certain that, as com pared with last year or any previous yeiJf Ihe present meeting of the Socie ty is a suecess. The amount received as entrance fees' alone had reached about $2,200 1 on : Tuesday . evening. Since that time It has been impossible to learn the amount taken in, as the officers have been too busy to keep a daily record of the receipts and place it n shape tri be communicated to re porters. The Agricultural Address was deli vejed to-day by A. C. Jones, Esq., and listened to by a respectable audience. At 10 o'clock the plowing match came off, but as yet it has been impossible to get the names of the competitors or the award of premiums The great trotting race which was postponed from Wednesday came off, and was the first race of the day. This was three in five, mile heats, for $500; first premium' $330 second' premium CI rA , TIM.L A. . i ,nt , ... . ieuu enierea "jjiacKDii" ana Lindsley entered "Jaynard." The latter won in three straight? beats . time, 2:401, 2:44J and 2:44. "Blift&- bird's" time was 2:433, 2:45 and 2:45. . Horsemen claim this as tfie best time ver made in Oregon:- " fTJfcie next race was at'cfclock p. m., pacing, two in three, purse, $150; first premium, $100; second premium, $50. JT. Jj. Rudd entered "Horace Greeleyj" and S.' Montgomery antcred "Shoo Fly,'.' - The former took the first heat; time,"2:38j. . "Shoo Fly" took the sec ond and third;. heats;" time,' 2:37 and 2:40. ; ; At half-past'3,,,oclock the trotting race for three-yearolds was- made the order of the day; '.The race,-as per ah Tiouncemebt by ihe Societjv was two iii three, purse of $100;. first-premium; ' $75; second premium, $25; thrfee to en ter and, two to. start, jitilsb entered f Robert Bonner,", and Cowdellntered 4,'Ni?per.'' Bonner" wo'ti' la' two Jtraighf heat's; time, 3:31' and 3:27.. , ? Thte ended the racing, -except a Sam- bcr of scrub contests not worth men tioning. ' A hasty run around among the stalls where the stock Is kept gave convinc ing evidence that this feature of the exhibition is really excellent.- . v. ' FIFTH DAY. f This being the last day of the Fair everything is In bustle and confusion. Many are leaving because they have become weary, while others have left in disgust in consequence of depleted exchequers, superinduced by too lively bidding for pools and too frequently "getting on the wrong horse." At 9 o'clock to-day the Judges on draft horses proceeded to inspect those on exhibition. There were three en tries, by Westfall, Duncan dm! Morris. The horses were all noble-looking ani mals, but in the opinion of the Judges Westfall was entitled to the first pre mium and Duncan the second, and the awards were made accordingly. At half-past 1 o'clock the great race of the season was run. This was for a purse of $1,000. First premium, $750,' second premium, $300; three in five, running. Gird entered "Buckskin" and Ross entered "Trifle." The latter won the inside track. At the pool stand "Trifle" was the favorite from the beginning, and sold two to one higher thau her competitor. The hor ses, though showing a great deal of mettle, acted splendidly. "Trifle" won in three straight heats; time, 1:50, 1:55 and 1:56. "Buckskin's" time was 1:51, 1:57 and 1:59. This race closed the running for the season. Considerable meney changed hands on the result, both at the pool stands and in private lists, but odds of two to one were gen erally given by those betting on "Trifle." At half-past 3 o'clock the ladles com peting for the premium in the line of equestrianship appeared on the track in front of t.ie judges' stand. There were three competitors Mjs. II. S. Crowder, Mrs, .V. Luper ami Mrs. M. L Nixon. They were all well mount ed and managed their horses iu fine style. The sympathies of your corres pondent were deeply enlisted in behalf of the gallant judges, who seemed at a loss how to decide airaiust either of the fair rivals who were o earnestly striving to bear oil the palm of victo ry. There was no escaping the duty imposed, however, and tho judge sup posed to possess tho steadiest nerve, was authorized to attach the blue rib bon to Mrs. Crowder's rein, and the red to that of Mrs. Nixon. Mrs. L.u per rode without a saddle, a feat in which she is without an equal in the State perhaps. . She sat her spirited horse with as much apparent ease and reariessuess as most ladies would ex hibit reclining in an arm chair. The next and last order of the day was a foot race, quarter of a mile, pre mium $10. There were three who competed for the purse, named respec tively, Price, Saunders and Sportsman. Saunders won; time, 1:05. Sjort.snian ! came in second, but many feet in the rear. The Marshal - now proclaimed the Eighth Annual Fair of the Linn County Agricultural Sciety closed. Personal. IJ'.ii. Thompsou. editor of the Mercury, was in attendance up on the County Fair a couple of days last week, and called in to see us dur ing his stay. R. G. Head and Geo. McCIane, pro prietors of the C'orvallis Democrat, rushed in upon us the other day on their way to the State Fair. Hiram Farlow, of Ashland, former ly of this county, gladdeced us with his presence in town last Wednesday. He reports times rather lively in Jack son county. Wheat is worth a dollar a bushel and everybody 'goes for Greeley. Escaped. On Thursday evening of last week Charles Brown ami Alex. Reid, confined in the county jail await ing their trial fur stealing a span of horses and a buggy from Bartgcs & Merrick, escaped and have not yet beeu cairtured. They made their way through the aperture over the door connecting the hall La which they were temporarily placed into an adjoining hall, and then into the front room, from which they easily escaped out side. A reward f one hundred dollars has been ofTered for their capture. Stone Coal There was on exhibi tion at the County Fair some fine spec imens of stone coal, from the Beaver coal mines, north of Lebanon, in the Forks of the Santiam. The mines be long to the Beaver Coal Mining Com pany, of which Gov. Ballard is Presi dent and, Harrison Jolinsn and M. D. By land Directors. The specimens which were on exhibition were pro nounced by good Judges to be of supe rior quality. , Fine Sheep. Mr. Nimrod Price, of this county, had on exhibition at the County Fair a number of fine-blooded sheep which attracted considerable at tention. One Cotswold buck, import ed from England, one fine French -Merino ewe, and a pair of lambs, a cross between the two, were really excel lent. Mr Price sheared a flock of year lings of the same cross last spring, which averaged 12 lbs to the fleece. Burglars. The residence of Mr. Jason TFheeler was burglarized on last Friday night while the family was absent attending theeounty Fair. The burglars ransacked the bouse but con tented themselves by taking a couple of gold specimens from a drawer and a supply of provisions. Brown and Reed who broke jail are supposed to have been the guilty party. Arrested fob Gajibling. The authorities arrested a man named Browri fr gambling during Fair week. He was taken before Justice Carothers and fined $100 and costs. He conclud ed first not to pay his fine, but' a' few days in tall made him change his' na tion and he paid up and, shaking the dust of Albany frdtd -his feet, departed. Jobe EBGiABA The residence of Moses Miller, about five miles ' east of town; wasr entered by thieves last Thursday night. " r The thieves took a fine shot-gnu and Eome other articles of less varlae. This things is becoming monotonotte. There is certainly an or ganized band of burglars about. : . Thanks?
