Last Monday, at twenty minutes past 4 o'clock p. m., was the time wheu the predicted collision of our little planet with the new comet," discovered by the Swiss astronomer, Plantamour, was to have taken place, ll'e liad ev erything about our sanctum In readi ness to receive the shock. Our edito rial chair, which had become some what discouraged like by the wear and tear incident to editorial life, we bad exchanged for an empty nail keg, ou which we firmly seated ourself. He braced our feet against the wall under our table, which was also in rather a demoralized condition owing to the loss of two of its legs. . Our mucilage bottle and pen rack we deposited safe ly in the waste-paper box, and with a fine life-sized portrait of Horace Gree ley, which we keep suspended against the wall in our front, fondly folded to our bosom, we awaited the approach .of the expected wreck of matter and crash of worlds with the calm con sciousness of one "Who his duty knows, . And knowing dares to do." Four o'clock and twenty minutes came and went, and to our utter disgust no celestial messenger, shaking from his fiery hair pestilence and war, made his appearance. We felt disappointed, and turning to our late exchanges we found that the "St. Petersburg Times of a recent date publishes the result of the joiut observations by the Swiss astron omer, Plantamour, and the Russian Professor Bockh, of a comet which ap pears to have been observed by them separately, but nearly simultaneously by one at Geneva and the other at St. Petersburg. The Gazette says Planta miour was right when he asserted that the orbit of his comet crossed the earth's in such a way as to necessitate a collision of the two bodiea. Bockh and Plantamour state that there is no reason to disbelieve that the orbit of he comet is strictly a parabola and that iu passing on towards the sun the new and terrible visitor to solar system will smite the earth, with what result, however, it is impossible to foretell. When first observed the comet was far beyond the most distant point reached by Neptune. Subsequent observa tions show it moving with a velocity of about nineteen miles a second, about the rate the earth moves in its orbit, and that early in August it will be visi ble to the naked eye as a small patch of light twelve and a half degrees west of the Polar star. It will become more distinctly visible and the tail be seen divided into three parts. Thenceforward until the collision takes place, it will increase in apparent size and splendor until its light shall fill the entire heav ens, rendering the stars, moon and even the sun invisible. As to the exact mement of contact there is a disagreement between results arrived at by astronomers, Bockh giving it August 12, at twenty minutes to 4 P. M., Greenwich time; which Planta mour places it at half past six P. M., a difference of two hours and fifty minutes." It is only neceasary to add that if any person wishes to purchase our interest in comets -they can have it cheap. - . . , CoiffEREXCE. Columbia Annual Conference of the M. E. Tho Society is making every necessary preparation to provide for the comfort and conven ience of exhibitors, and others who may attend. The brilliant array of premiums offered In every department of the Fair is very creditable to the Society and adds greatly to the inducements heretofore offered to competitors to enter their produce, stock etc. There are already a large number of horses on the ground in training and a larger attendance is anticipated at the coming Fair than was ever before seen In any county in the State. Heavy Thcxder. On last Tuesday evening the citizens of Albany were startled by one of the most vivid flash es of lightning and heavy claps of thunder ever experienced In this lati tude. It occurred about half-past eight o'clock. There were many on the streets and sidewalks, and In the vicin ity of the Court House several persons were almost prostrated by the electric shock. It came without the least warning, being the first report heard during the eveulng. The lightning seemed to envelop the town in one complete blaze, and the thunder fol lowed in such, quick succession that no time was given for reflection, and the sensation made on the mind was not unlike that caused by the unex pected explosion of a magazine. Jany of those who were on the 6trect at the time say the first thought that occur red to them was Prof. Bockh's com et had actually switched its fiery tall round in too close proximity to our little planet to be agreeable. . . . . Corvallis FiRB Engine, The En gine belonging to the Corvallis fire company was brought up on last Jou- day's train, to this place. Albany company received it at the depot and, assisted by a number of the Corvallis company, housed it in their Engine room. The engine is the largest, worked by hand, ever brought to this coast. It was brought from Baltimore to San-Francisco as early as 1S50, and cost originaly, "51S.00O. The Corvallis company purchased It for $2,000. It will remain at Albany uutil it U fitted for use. when Albany company pro pose visiting Corvallis and taking a hand in exhibiting its powers as an extinguisher to the citizens of that place. Ixvitatiox Accepted. We learn from the Portland dailies that at a special meeting of Willamette Engine Co. A committee has been appointed by the company to make all the preliminary arrange ments. A Poor Concern. A Perilous Seawon. Glorious and delightful as the Summer wea ther if. its tropical heat is a severe trial to the vital powers. Even the strongest are some times prostrated by its effects. The common phrase applied to this condition of the body is 'general debility." Now, general debility ari ses from, and includes a variety of ailments. The liver is more or less affected, the bowels are either constipated or much relaxed," the stom ach but half performs the work of digestion, the appetite is poor, and the spirits depressed. This is what is called general debility,' It is a genera! disarrangement of all the pbysicnl functions, and requires a a remedy a medicir.e that will regulate tbem all. Hostctter's Stom ach Bitters is specially adapted to this purpose. Its general operation is not confined to a single organ. If the liver is affected, it restores its tone.- If the stomach is torpid, it regenerates it. If the nerves are tremulous and weak, it braces and reinforces them. If the mind, which ever sympathises with the body, ii gloomy and despondent, it relieves the difficul ty, and soon brings the whole mechanism of the body into harmony with the laws of health. There is no civilized nation in the Western Hemisphere in which the utility of llostfetter's Stomach Bitters as a tonic, correotive, and anti-bilious medicine, is not known afid , apprecia ted. Throughont the tropics it is considered, both by the people and 'ho profession, the stan dard speci6c. While it is. a medicine' for . all seasons and all climates, it is especially suited to the complaints generated by the weather, be ing the purest and best vegetable stimulant in the world. . .. . ; . , - :-.-' Beware of the bitters made of acrid and dan gerous materials, which unscrupulous ; parties are. endeavoring to foist upon, the people.
