The last "field day" of tlie Maine Historical Society was enlivened ly an address from Mr. R. K. Sewall, who said that at a special meeting of the Soeietv, held at Augusta, in Feb ruary, 1SG9, the question of the ex istence of pared streets at Pemaquid was discussed, some alleging occular demonstration, and others dennying the fact. On motion of the Hon. J. AY. Bradbury' a large committee of the Society was appointed to visit the spot. On the 2Cth of August following, that committee proceeded to Bristol, and found the half had not been told, for sections of pavements, artistical ly built of beach cobble stones, with perfect gutters and curbings, were opened and examined, unearthed from the depth of a foot or more of soil, above w hich the tall-grown grass Lad long waved and often been shorn and made into hay. .Further examination disclosed oth er facts, showing that Maine had a mysterious but buried history, to un earth which the citizens of Bristol were promised a field day exercise in two years from that date by this Society on condition that they would make fuller explorations of their an cient remains, aud gather up for the use of the Society all fragments of history within reacli, and a special committee was orgauized to take this duty in charge, tlie remarkable re- , suits of whose efforts in developing the archsxdogy of tLis spot have seemed to justify the recommenda tion, that a granite Bhaft here be rais ed in the interests of the history of Maine, to mark the "beginnings" of !New England here uncovered. J. H. Hackleton gave a most inter esting detail of relics and traditions, supported by affidavits of living eye witnesses, showing that in 1S3G a fragment of a gravestone was turned out by a plow near the ancient bur ial "ground of Jamestown, marked -with the date of 160G. He exhibited ' a leader ornament, apparently a tag to a roll or piece of cloth, dug up at 2f. Harb r in ISoS, bearing date 1610, an English H in the center. The affidavit of Mr. Fasset, that in 1753 the ancient canal showed re mains four feet high, deep and wide, bearing at that date maple trees eighteen inches ia diameter. He al so exhibited pipes from the apparent rains of an ancient factory there, of the patterns of pipes of clay, in all respects like pipes classified, marked, and arranged in a museum of tobacco pipes ia Guildhall, London, belong ing to the times of James the First and Charles the Second of England, eeen there by Mr. Dean, and now compared with the specimens shown. Spoons of the pattern of the Eliz abethan period, and in all respects .like those dag up at Gosnold's land ing on the Elizabeth Islands, are found here and were shown. He al so exhibited shot found in a locality cf X. Harbor, where heaps of 6hot from the size of a bullet to a Xo. 2 have been taken out, 50 lbs at a time, within the past five years, by his affi ant, Joshua Thompson, of X. Harbor. At this place are the ruins of an ancient fort, 52x51 feet, walls 5 feet thick, which, 47 years ago, was over grown with Tery large oaks, now cleared off. Full descriptions of the streets of Jamestown, pavements, re mains of smitheries, as they were half a century ago, were given by eye-witnesses and laborers who had been employed to remove the ruins and level the streets, fill up the cel lars and dig up the pavements, and erase the remains. ; THOUGHTS FOB Tlin PEOPLE The reason why the "good house wife" is like the broad Atlantic, is be cause she sometimes wears white cans. If you would retain your peace of mind keep your temper. "When we look back to the sweet days of our childhood, the happy summer time of our life how apt are we to conclude that the present is more sorrowful than the past. Should your neighborhood exhibit any very great curiosity to know how you live, press them to visit you, but always after dinner, for curious neighbors are generally great hogs. Whenever a quack dentist comes along, don't fail to have him drag out some sound grinders and insert his artificial ones. It is such a de lightful thing to pay a hundred dol lars for a little humbug. , The simplest inventions are usual ly the result of the greatest minds. Simple minds stretch at things which they are not capable of grasp ing. True greatness consists in being what every man should be, a uhns tian. Find a man so bigoted that be be lieves only himself and his to be right, and you will 6ee one whose own soul often steals out of his keeping, and only returns in the hope of better things. The Eilbourn City ("Wis.) Mirror is responsible for the following mod ern version of Damon and Pythias: The other day two gentlemen, whose names we might furnish were rambling along the river bank a short distance below, when one ot tnem, making a misstep, slipped into the water. After safely reaching terra nrma again, his clothes all dripping with moisture, the other being a man of noble impulses, remarked : "Mine Gott! it was too bat dat you be bo mooch vet und me pe all dry." i - And to express his sympathy for his friend, he deliberately plunged into the cooling stream, and came out with his ardor unabated. Butler says : "If I am not sustain ed in more cabins by the prayers of the colored man than any other com mander in the army, I will never ap pear in public again." If Gen. But ler will stand by this, it is worth while to have a Congress Commission issued to ascertain how. much he is SCISSORIXCiS.; The Ohio river is going to decline. It keeps its bed and is quite low. "Why was Eve not afraid of the measles? Because she'd Adam. "When you hear a man say "Lifo ia but a dream," tread on his corns. Lifo is real. An Indiana lover of ninety-one is engaged to a poor-house inmate aged one hundred and six. Two Englishmen have been eaten by the Fijians, who speak highly of their tenderness and gamey llavor. There were 1,700 Bainplos of milk inspected in Boston last year, of which 610 were more or less adulter ated. Thiers is said never to punctuate in writing, and saldom to kuow when to come to a atop in rpeaking. The weather prophets have come out with the assurance that tho com ing winter is to bo an unusually cold one. If you want to eat just such a pud ding as your mothei made vhen you were a boy, you mu8t somehow revive a boy's appetite and palate. In proof of the assertion that cattle will stray into strange places, we may say that we have seen a cowjhide in a shoemaker's shop. Some of the old orange roes in Florida have suffered so much from insects that many groves have been burned down to get rid of the pests. A learned Hindoo lady, who is lecturing in England, says the vice of intemperance was unknown in In dia till the English introduced it there. Mrs. Elizabeth Cady Stanton's old est son, a youth of twenty-tixyear, i3 one of the most prominent members of the Louisiana Legislature. A Cincinnati youth, twelve years old, stole a trunk full of his sister's clothing, and some money from his father, and eloped with a girl of eleven. Steamer Artie, of Dundee, Scot land, returned from a whaling trip the other day, having taken thirty- seven whales, which produced 200 tons of oil. It is stated that in Xew York city, recently, a quantity of human hair, silky, silver gray, aud thirty inches long, was sold for $33 an ounce nearly twice as much as gold will bring. Mobile boasts a man wio ate forty two eggs and drank a gallon of lager beer for breakfast, ate six pound of beef and two loaves of bread, and drank a gallon of lager for dinner. The pastor of the Baptist church ia Cambridge baptized two young ladies the other day and married one of them right there in the church before she had time to get dry. A strict temperance man in Con necticut would not let his horse diink out of a public trough which had the word "bitters" painted upon it by Borne peripatetic advertising agent.
