A lar;o number of Masons, teonpned by an equal num Uer f ladles, left tbi eitj for Corrallis, on tire itamer Echo, last Monday, to attend Ore Masonic installation in that city. From the fact of tl proverbial slowness of the 'tmttwlthe additional fact that a heavy south wind was blowing directly in her "snoot1' all the way up, it may be correctly imagined that the trip was a slow one ; but tne passengers amused themselves by danc ing and pleieant conversation, and when we arrived at Corvallis the utmost good feel ing and gajetr prevailed. The installation was at the Court House, which was densely crowded by the brethren and their families, added to which were a large number of spectators, who had been drawn there by curiosity or interest. The installation of the cScers of th6 Royal Arch Chapter was first in order, and was a very impressive and instructive ceremony. Next came the - installation of the Blue Lodo officers, which was followed by an address on Ma sonry by Hon. John Burnett. The address was a beautiful legend on Masonry, and a lecture on mcraity and charity of the very first order, and doubtless made many a heart present entertain a more favuraMo and en larged opinio of the objects and tenets of th t4 Order f the Mystic Tic." The cer emonies were interspersed with appropriate tausjc by a wall trained quartette of singers, aided by a m?lodon accompaniment, a f?a tn re which was highly appreciated by those present. After the installation was over a bountiful ftupper was served by Major John eon at the City ILttel, which was partaken of and enjoyed to the fullest extent by over one hundred persona. The Major certainly anderstaads Law to cater to the palate of his gueata. Our arrr t e next morning had a quick and safe return home n the steamer licit xace, feeling that it wan go d for them to go away and gool to come home again. Caairrais at Albast. At I'jrrish'a Hall the United Presbyterian, Congregation al aad. Baptist Sabbath School scholars, with their tca;i rs and parents, ha. a gay time. The hall was crowded with seeker .after pleasure and amusement, and alaiot every device was introduced to afbrd de light Co those assembled. Baskets ( cake snd fruit vr mal a rutin. I nritml iiaikIt and the little ones devoured the gMxJ ies ith a relish sharpened by true enjoyment. F'r the ediSeatkm of the children, II ev S. G. Irvine gave a miniature panoramic exhibi tion with his csagic lantern, whi :h was highly appreciated by all present. At the M. E. Cburch the children had a Christmas tree and a "famous g-od time generally." Santa Claus was most profuse and lavish in his gifts to the children, and they were happy accordingly. The bail at Houek 4b Myer'a ILKel was a brilliant wiceess in the fullest senseof the term. About twenty-five OKiple were pres ent, representing the beauty, grace and fashion ef oar city. The supper, gotten up and superintended by 3Iesrs. Brenner and Riggers, was an excellent repast, reflecting credit on those engaged in its preparation ; and the music, discoursed by Mr. Ros and Master Brenaer. was universally pro nounced the best ever furnished on a similar , occasion in our eity. The spacious apart ments of the magnificent building were brilliantly lighted and comfortably warmed, and the scene throughout the evening was tirring and animated, and all thought thai it was good to be there, and that to hpp. Shot. Last Monday night a man named .Dunham shot himself at Corvallis under the following circumstances, as he relates them himself: lie went to his room at the City Hotel aboat midnight, and was j exam ining a revolver which was loaded but seem- ed to be cut of repair, when his hani slip ped from the drawn hammer and th pistol went off and was pointed so thzX the all en. tered the stomach. Dr. Lee was called and j probed the woend but was unable to find .the ball, which was somewhere in tie dia- j pbrsgm. The man's life was suppose! to !e in a eritieal condition at laat accounts. He is an old man, a tinsmith, and ha s been drinking very hard for some 'week back, and there are same who discredit his story of the affair, aid believe that be attempted suicide while under the influence of liquor. Riorocs. List Friday night, Marshall Bell, of Corvallis, attempted to arrest some , roughs in a sal ran at that place, when they drew weapons and resisted, but at last be succeeded in accomplishing his purpose and lodged one of the parties in jail. But sometime that night the prisoner's friends effected his escape. Several suspected par ties were arrest s-J, and were to haye been , tried for this offense on last Tuesday, which we since learn resulted in the acquittal of one and the holding of the other two to an swer in the suet of $500 each. . Debate. We learn that Messrs. Todd and Arnoup will meet in discussion upon - the subject of Spiritualism in Portland, next week. The debase will be looked for ward to with great interest throughout the State, and we presume the enterprising pub lishers of the diily papers in Portland will have phonographic reporters on hand to writs up the discussion and give it in full to , their readers. You must do it, gentlemen, gaippiD. Mr. Nimrod Price a fey days since shipped to Thos. Cross, of Salem, " 'tome forty odd dressed hogs perhaps the finest lot, in respect to condition, ever ship ped ff on this point. i At Jefferson. We learn that the Breth ren of Jefferson Lodge, A. F. & A. M.t had a '"feast of reason and flow of soul" nt their installation last Monday night. Masonic Hall was crowded with the members of the Order and thefr invited guosts. Tho best of music enlivened tho occasion, and the ad dress of Hon. Geo. 11. Helm is said to have been neat and appropriate, combining genu ine eloquenco with poetry and beauty of ex pression. No ono can appreciate tho pleasure and benefits derived from such an reunion as that at Jefferson unless by expcrmcntal knowledge. .Would that there were more such. Council Meeting. To-night the out going Council that body which has Immor talized itself by buying a fire engine, dig ging cisterns, and "playing the d I gener ally" bold their last meoting, after which all but one of tho heroic band will lay down their armor and retire to the shades of pri vato life. One of the veteran Councilmcn, with the Mayor and Trcasucr, will hold their posts during another twelve months' seige, while tho Recorder and Marshal are con strained to take a tearful departure in com pany with the retiring Fathers. And this is all of greatness ! A Treat. An unknown (to u.) lady of this city this week sent by an unknown source a Holiday cake, with her compli ments. Would that we could all sco her, and, in token of our tearful gratitude, press the fair bands that could prepare so fair a present. But, the fates have decreed other wise, and we must suffer and be silent. (S. B. We trust that our readers will not think tho cake made us suffer, for it didn't.) C lunged Hands. The Eugene Guard has changed hands, Geo. J. Ruvs and A. Fitxroth purchasing the interest of the former proprietors and assuming entire control. The new proprietors announce that the pa per will bo thereafter, as heretofore, staunchly Democratic," and from the ring of the rst number under the new control we predict it will be a strong lever in sup port of Democratic measures. Attention ! We call the attention of our readers to the new advertisement of Mers. Blain k Young, in this week's paper. They commence the New Year with a new 4,ad," new good and new prices, and you will learn that there is something "new un der the sun" if you call at their establish ment and examine their "numerous" stock of good. Fiat ex's Klettmx. The member of Albany Fire Cotupanv Na. 1 will hold their annual election fur t.fiir-Ts on next Monday evening, nt Joseph Vellr's larber nhop.
