Release of an Arkanslaa. After Six and a Half Year Confinement In a Military Prison; 1 ; ' " XRUTIl STRANGER THAN FICTION. u This Mjiog was fully verified last Tuesday on the arri?al of the steamboat Natoma, for among her passengers was Mr. II. IT. Leo, formerly a citizen of Jlsdison, Saint Francis coUDty, ia .Uu State, but who fcas been . a prisoner, ia close confinement, for , the past six years and a half. So close was his confinement that hs never was allowed tho privilege of communicating with the outside worlds not even his own family, who were in the greatest distress at his sudden aud' mya terious disappearance and that too at a time when their worst fears were being daily realized. From a short conversa tion had with Mr. Lee, wo 'learned the following leading points connected with Ms abduction and detention in a loathsome pTison in the State of Wisconsin, and in America: In November, 1SG2, Mr. Lee went'to Memphis, then occupied by Federal troops, for the purpose of procur ing some supplies; he was arrested and fthrown into the Irving block, then occu pied as a prison ; he remained there one eight aud that evening, with, other pris oners, was shipped on board tbe St. Cloud -en route for Camp Douglas, in Illinois. Arriving there, the officer in charge of the Camp inquired what were the charges against lee, and was told that he was arrested for speculating in Confederate money. The Camp officer declined to receive him, as there was no law forbid ding speculation in money of any kind. The Lieutenant having Lee in custody said they would take him to Hock. Island then, as they would take any one there. He was accompanied by seven men as guards, and they concluded to have a grand spree before returning to Mem phis for active duty,, So went to Milwau kee, Wisconsin, and were going to put Lee in jail for safe keeping, until they had visited their friends and finished the .spree laid out for themselves. In the meantime Leo had resolved on escaping, in which determination he was heartily Joined and assisted by one of the guards having him in charge. They made their' escape, but were pursued and captured alter a few shots had bee n exchanged. Mr. Lee was then imprisoned in the Mil waukee jail and there kept in cloe con finement for two years and a half without beioz brought to trial. At the end. of that time he was taken out and sentenced (without a trial) to four years imprison ment in a branch of the State prison loca. ted at Madison, Wisconsin. . Daring the four long years of his con finement at Madison he was not allowed to write to his friends, never saw a neWs paper nor a book of any kind, but was as effectually excluded from the world as any liring man ever was before. His health -was good all the time, but be came near .freezing with cold the first three winters. The fourth he fared better. The time came at last for his release, and with 'a heart full of thanks toOod for tho preser vation of his life, his first thought and purpose was to seek his wife and child. He went to Cincinnati and there met with :an old school-mate who told him that h'13 wife was dead his child he knew coth mg of. Could it be possible? He,' left -there immediately for Memphis ; arriving there he was received as . one risen from the dead by his many friends, and from one of them he received the joyful tidings that his wife and daughter, now a grown joung lady, were not only living, but were , well and doing well. Tears of joy were ahed, and renewed thanks to Almighty God for his protecting care filled the heart of the released captive. The swift ness of the telegraph was commanded to -flash the glad tidings to'the dear wife rf his heart,' informing her that him fUr -whom she had mourned as dead still lived; :ao4,would meet her in Jackson on" the 13tbTinst. , They met. and such a meet ing as it was never oeeured within ow knowledge. The joy of he wife at the sight of her restored husband was too great, and swoon after swoon followed ia japid succession. - The sews spread rapidly, and many ni our citizens called upon the happy re-uoi -ted family, to express their joy at peeing its members once more joined togetbein i-he bonds of love. We have seldom ever witnessed a more affecting scene. ' Mr- and Mrs. Lee left Tuesday evening for Batesviile, their future home. An Elopement. The r Nashville pa pers announces an elopement which occurred at Cole's Station, in' Tennessee, on the Northwestern and Nashville Rail road, last week. ; A' yonng man' living near Cole's Station had been paying his attentions to., a beautifal young lady - for several esonths. Being advised by sev eral friends, he "popped the question" to the parents, who immediately refused tiim. iThe two then made up a plan to run away, and named Tuesday night at eleven o'eiock for their departure. The father. get wind of this littfc plan by some means or -other, and when that night came he loeked all of the doors and armed himself with a double-barrel shotgun and conjale41imself behind the house. 3Ieaa whsle like young lady had been adopting some feans of escape herself. ' I rf Fkding all the doors locked, she se cured a long rope, and fastening it to the bed-post she descended to the ground and met her lover, who was ready with, tWQ horses to carry them away. The old man having waited ' some tirae;Jdozed off to sleep, and never woke up until late in the eight. He proceeded to" the house and the ace to his daughter's room,, and upop entering and finding his daughter absent he vras greatly vexed. ghe had written him. a .note, say jug that when hewould see her again she would be married. The runaway couple went to : Franklin, and were-there united in the bonds oi matri mony. They returned .home on Wednes day, end were met by the father in a friendly manner. He at last" consented to give, theaVa'fina dinner, and a.'parlyj . All t officers in Iowa arelonVanjd have been for years, and yet iar Iowa" has beiJ discovered one of the greatest land swindJfis, except that of Congress in,; tbe Uniott 'Pacifie, that has ever keeJt.ie cordel. . ' v ' . Wheat. Campbell, of San Francisco, in his 1st cf August Circular lay ;i The receipts of wheat from tho now fcrop have been one-third larger during the present month than at a .correspond ing period last year, yet there is not uf ficient , offered on tho market to supply, tho local demancf; the grc"atef portion having been purchased in country to go directly on shipboard. C The slock of old in warehouse is completely exhausted, and there U no uew being stored by either farmers or dealers the former recelf itg a much higher price than ihoy had f an ticipated, and the lattery warned ' by .the experience ofJast year are unwilling to Operato at present figures. All the wheat shipped up to the present has'ben on Eoglistoorders. wliile at thin timo last year, a great portion, was ship ped on Culii'ornis account, in anticipation of higher rates ruling, but which wound up with disappointment und heavy losses to all engaged. The crop in this State it not turning out iw well as anticipated, jus tho rust has done more per ions injury in many counties than was at first gener ally reported, and tho "consequence is we thall have a large quantity of shriveled cruin. 'The prico opened at $1 50 and $1 55, and has gradually advanced to SI iO to SI 75 fur best shipping grades. Cure for Suicides Grace Green wood tells a story illustrating, new meth od of curing ihoe who aro inclined to suicide. The ' father "of a family, after two attempts to mane way wun nimeeu, at length succeeded in shooting himself through the heart. His widow an en ergetic sensible woman perceived that her eldest daughter was iaclincd to follow in the footsteps of her father, even unto death. I he mother watched her daugh ter narrowly, and ono day found her soon after she had swung herself off fro as an old chest in tho garret. She cut her down, and tenderly brought her to; then, taking the knotted halter, she laid it over her shoalder. saying : '"I'll put a stop to this suiciding ! I m not going to have it rui in our family, I'll have ou under stand." This treatment was successful in curing the mental disease. Josh Billings says, "I am violently opposed tew ardent speentss az a bev ridge, but for manufacturing purposes, think a little of it tastes good. Tue man who was lost in slumber is said to have found his way out on a night mare. Acctc and chronic rheumatism, as well ai gut, generally affect the joint, bat other more valuable parts are alao subject to their attacks.
