J. 1 i v 11 J8&. JOwflaai HATURDAY.. FEBRUARY 29, 136S. Money Market, flan Francisco Legal Tender rates.. New York Gold tiuotauons 140J CottRKSPONDKNTS AND DeLINQVENTS. We haTO a few words to say to all who write for the press. We are glad to havo good corres pondents. They serve to impart life aud vi vacity to the Democrat, by giving facts, local and otherwise, in their immediate vicinity. But they must obey certain rules and keep within certain prescribed limits. AVo re cently had a communication, very well writ ten, sent to us in pencil mark. Wo want its author to favor us occasionally with his lucubrations ; but for our sake, aud more es pecially that of the compositors, we hope ho it ill use good black ink hereafter. And what vtq say to this correspondent we say to others. Again : Be as concise as possible. Study x give a large amount of meat and but little lull. In this respect your communications ought to resemble the peccan nut sweet, concentrated, and nutritious. As the Dem ocrat is not as largo as a blanket, its writers should dilute as little as possible. Of course there may be occasions when a different rule trill bo right thore are exceptions to all yules but ordinarily this one must be ad hered to. It is also desirable that corres pondents write only on one side of the sheet, 1 wiving the other side blank. For some weeks past, as our readers well tnow, we have been short of paper, owing ti the ice-embargo that has only been re cently removed. For the paper on which this number of the Democrat is printed we are indebted to the editor of the Journal; but from a letter from Messrs. Allen k Lewis, of Portland, we learn that a good supply of paper, for us, was there awaiting cur order, on the the 22d. instant. We do not antici. pate any more hindrances, from this cauo, in the future , and as the campaign is now fairly open we intend to pitch in, and deal sturdy blows to the traditional and her iditary enemies of Democracy, from this time onward until the campaign shall have closed. But, in order to dc this we mut be backed up by oar friends in every legitimate manner. They should see to it that they pay up promptly. If you subscribe for the Dtmoerat pay for it down, if possible. If joa want time and it is granted, be sure to pay at the expiration of your promise. Do not make us wait month after month, un der the impression that three dollars do not amount to much, and that hence we will be tut little affected by your dilatoriness. We concede that $3 are but a trifle ; but sev veral hundred three dollars make a snug pile. When, we trust a subscriber, we do m because we; believe him to be honorable and honest. There are men on our listmen standing high ia community men abundantly able t-i com mand their hundreds and thuu.sauds who have teen taking the Democrat for the last -twenty months, and jet have not paid a ccut for, it. These men are not dishonest they wish us good speed but they are criminally careless. If they do not turn over a new leaf soon thoir names will be stricken from our list and our accounts against them placed in .pome proper person's hands for collection. 'A word to the wise is sufficient." Albaxt Ferrt. We understand that Ashby Pearce, proprietor of the Lower Fer ry, recently bought the Upper Ferrj, giv ing 5,500 so that now he has complete control of both fcrry3. This arrangement nill somewhat affect the public, as the rates, of ferriage will be considerably rai.seJ ; j not higher, however, than is uual on the Willamette. For some month pit the rates of ferriage have been ridiculously lyw, ow ing to the opposition between th two ferrys. j . Oar friend Pierce will now make money. Ax out Desoc2at. Lat Thursday wej had a call from Daniel Bringle, Esq., an old' resident of Linn county. Although sixty five years of age, he is still hale and vigor ous ; in proof of which he not long ago walked from Sweet Home Valley to a friend's foqr mi! 63 south of Lebanon. He is so full of democratic principles that, when struck, bis back, rings out -Democracy." We trust ba may live to see a Democratic President again inaugurated, and the fonl dominant party driven from power. IIos. YVU Clover, We understand from ft gentleman living near Hon. Paul Clover ttat a few days ago he was taken down very sick; and that Mrs. Clover also is quite low. It is not probable that Mr. Clover will be present the next session of the County Com missioners' Court. We hope he may speed ily recover, as he is not only a very estima ble citizen and neighbor, but he is one of the .soundest and most judicious public servants this county ever had. Runaway-. A dray-horse belonging to 3Ir. Blake, of this city, made a very decid ed attempt to runaway last Monday morn ing; but the dray was too heavily loaded for him to make much headway ; and he was caught and secured before accomplishing xtuch damage. Xgg Matthew Fountain, an old resident of Linn county living near Harrisburg, was re. ntiy kicK by a norse over the left eye ,and Krr severely injured. Fears, were en tertained at one time tat the eye would go .out, but appearances now indicate that he rill recover. 'The FAIB.-The Fair given on the 21st in tantby the friends of tha M. E. Church of tfcis place, was well attended, and tho results wer tetter than most anticipated, the net proceeds being $142,37, Latest advices from the East inform us that there is an advance of ten per cent, on dry goods, so that it is hardly probable that our present quotations on that staple Vill hold giod for any length of time. The "Social Hop," given on Thursday evening last, at Parrish's Hall, was a very pleasant affair, and gave entire satisfaction to all those who participated in the festive B jene. . '. '. ' . ... rij We learn that the Democracy of JJrownsTille were addressed on- Friday (the 3 1st) by Hon. G. R. Hclin. He epoke in the afternoon and eyening to crowded house3, JThat Railroad. There is at this time considerable talk about railroads in Oregon. Whilo other places blow a great deal, Albany executes. Albany has the honor of having quietly built tin first railroad in tho State j and it is now in successful operation. Messrs. Parrish & Mendenhall havo recently constructed a magnificent uhow-window in the Drug store room occupied by Wakefield & Co., and it is so arranged that it can bo drawn back into tho room on T rails. It is at present worked by horso power ; and it works admirably. Would it not bo cheaper to run it by initio power ? By tho way, Wakefield has been setting things to rights amazingly in his store. His drugs look as clean aud fresh as if just taken from a band box. Trt Mrs. Stipp's Thoracic Balaam. ALII A NY I'KICI.S CUKUEXT. CORRECTED WEEKLY BV J. CRADWOIIL. Albany.
