STATE RIGHTS DEMOCRAT. ADVKItTlSKHKNTS: A 1) V 13 It T I S K M K N T S . A I) V K It T I B 15 M i: N T S 1 1 L ADVK ll'TISK M ENTS. Impes chnifut of tho President. The Chicago Tribune has been loudly call ing for th impeachment of President Uohn ion.' Itbijjrcd, scgMcJ, mid threatened by turiis." "Bit Congress adjourned without do ing anything of the kind. That body must have become alarmed for its own safety, and and being thu.s frightened, it backed squaro duwn, and now see the course of the Tribune. In ipeakir g of the class of Republicans-who are in favor of impeachment, the Tribune says : - . "Xh&M :nen are for the removal of Andrew Johnson, and to many of them it is immate rial whethor there bo sufficient cause for it or not. We have no doubt that Andrew John son has beon piilty of official nets that might be used to justify impeachment and removal. But the pnof of these acts is nut bo easily procured. An impeachment and a convic tion upon charges supported, by inferential. testimony, would displace Andrew Johnson, but would not blacken his name. A convic tion upon charces other than a clear, ralpa- blejand intentional violation of law and of duty, while it would remove him from orace, would not carry with it that weight and au thority which a grave proceeding should have. An impeachment, conviction and re-, moral of an obnoxious President as a mere party measure, will not meet the approval of me country, nor will it deserve it. ihe im peachment, conviction and removal of the president of the United States is a solemn proceeding that should not be entered upon for light causes, should not be prosecuted except under circumstances where the Na tional safety required it, and then only upon clear cases of criminal acts, sustained by unquestionable proofs. "We had a melan choly instance of reckless accusation and humiliating withdrawal in the investigation undertaken last week by Mr. Wentwnrth. Charges btued upon hearsay, and involved in a mist of questionable authority, are not sufficient to justify a formal impeachment of Sv i j i ; . A. a frcsiuenB ana a temporary puruijsii ui iuc Executive power of the Government." You, Mr. Tribune, never urged impeach ment upon any other ground than as a party measure. Never, never and now you aQru thqt&uch a proceeding would not "meet the approval of the country." Then, again, you speak of the "melancholy instance of reckless accusation and humiliating with drawal ia tb3 investigation undertaken last week by Mr. "Wentworth." Indeed, why were "Wentworth's malignant lies and slan ders of the President humiliating? Especi ally when this has been the exclusive busi ness of every Radical Congressman for the past year. Why should only Wentworth's malignity be "melancholy" to the Tribune and its party? Is it not foolishly splitting hairs, or are we to understand the entire party has squarely backed down from its high inypeaefcment? Cairo Democrat. OUR AGENTS.
