STATE RIGHTS DEMOCRAT. 3Ionejr SXarkct. Fan Frineisco Legal Tender rates.... 7S74 Kew York Gold notations i Hellions Notice. The Rer. Mr. Short, of Corral; is. will preach next Sabbath, atli ociooa, m ia the Dixie School llonso. ..The Oregon City Enterprise. The editor of this Radical sheet has some thing derogatory to say of us in & lato num ber. "VTe know all about this brindlc-haired genius. He is now a ranting, red-mouthed, blatant Radical, although professedly pub lishing a neutral paper ; and under tho cov er of nsutrality he advocates tho radical pro gramme with whatever ability ho possesses. Yet we can prove that he published, on this coast, not many moons ago, a "copperhead" paper. About a year ago, when we were starting the Herald, ho sent a friend to us, more than once, and through him sought the position of local reporter ; aliedging that, though at work for Pittock, ho was as truo a Iemoe, rat as qould be seared up, and that he was -Kuring on tho Oregonian to obtain his , bread and butter. We refused to employ him because first, we doubted his democracy, and second, because we did not deem him fit for the position. One thing we disliked in him was his penchant for noipg round and prying into affairs that did not concern the 1 public and then giving them publicity. . This red-headed, brandy-soaked specimen of humanity was, a few moons ago, very hos tile to monopolies, particularly the Ocean - Steamship Company. Yet he now favors one, with all his limited ability, not a whit . better. Is it because ho has been bought ' over? Some time last spring or summer he jras so offensively personal, in his warfare on the Ocean Company, that one of the cap tains in their employ knocked him down on one of the wharves of Portland. He made no attempt at resistance although he had every chance to do so but, picking himself up, he ferociously seized his cane and walked oSl We published a very brief no tice of the affair, at the time, and ever since he has defamed us whenever he had anything like a fair pretext for so doing. ti,:.. ii j 1 i ii i say about our ''Christianity." We do not deny our firm belief in the cardinal doctrines of Christianity. But this white-livered libel ler, and liar this pimp this ninny this fellow without bonqr find without correct principles this trickster end time-server this uninitigated coward uay as well un qerstanl that we believe in the doctrine" of self-deft nseaUo. We believe it not cnly right bet a duty o protect ourself when as sailed,' either in 'our person or character.' tVhile we act as editor we shi.ll defend th6 . men and measures yre en'dorss j and if this blatant .Tacigrlaxd. and paltroon does not like to JuiVi'ua pitch inti Lira, he must let us ana our inenas aione. Cranok L Helm. When the Legislature wa3 ;n eos ion last fall we visited the capital, and ha(fthe pleasure of hearing Hon. George Helm make some remarks in the House of Representatives; and we considered him, and substantially io said at the time, one of the best public speakers in the State, and a fearless champion of the rights and honor of his constituents. ' But not until this week tare we ever heard his partner, Mr. Crancr, on the forum. During the week a man was tried before the County Court Judge Geary presiding5 on a charge ot perjury, in which ease Crinor &' Helm appeared in behalf of the State.-"Mr.'Cranor made the closing ip'eeeh; and ft was an effort of which we Bave just grounds for. being proud. It was concise, to the point, and logical, and withal abounded in impassioned appeals truly elo quent. Mr. C. stands high as a lawyer here, but until we heard Mm speak, we supposed it wa in consequence of his legal knowledge and skill in preparing and managing a case rather than as a superior advocate. To Delinquents. We hope those owing .us on subscriptions will not neglect to send us what they owe, by some friend, at the next session of the Circuit Court. , We are in dead earnest in this matter. The excuse .that some make that they will wait and see ifthe Democrat will not smash up is stale, fiat and unprofitable, and invalid. While we are no "bummer," borrowing $20 of this man, and $40 of another, and $75 of an other and never paying we wish it distinct ly understood that we do not go to the other extreme, but we want the money which we have fairly earned. We don't "bum" mon ey out of others, and we don't intend others shall "bum" much out of us, "you bet." In the States we had the reputation of being a good hand not only to make money but to collect it after it was made. We don't in tend our reputation shall suffer much in this particular here in Oregon. Come, gentle men, walk up to the clerk's office' and settle. , ... ' ' ,; Joel K. Dbiggs.-Death has again visited us. On the 10th inst. Joel'K. Driggs, a large portion of whose life was spent in this county was stricken down by consumption, and Tuesday last, his mortal remain were followed to the grave by a large concourse of relatives, friends and citizens, and in charge of the Good Templars. His death, though for some weeks hourly expected, has cast a gloom over the community. 'Mr. Driggs was universally beloved. He was a young man of much promise ; and additicn he was almost faultless as a son, ft, brother, a friend, or citizen. He unfalter ingly and sternly trod where duty pointed, and asked none to cultivate virtues he did not himself practice with a constancy and fidelity rarely equaled. We motit sincerely condole with his rela tives in their irreparable loss. The Weather of Last Febxcakf. It is professedly against our nr tide on Spiritualism ; but it is really an at tempt to prove tho theory of universal salva tion. Wo mean rm disrespect to him when we say ho has not met the issuo. Ono post tion wo assumed was, that Spiritualism teaches tho dogma of universal salvation. Mr. Fry does not deny this j but admits it, and attempts to provO it to bo truo from tho Bible. Wo shall not debata this question with him. It is not in iftsuo legitimqtcly, and wo do not intend to bo drawn into the discussion of this, or any other question for eign to tho subjects under consideration. In a private noto to us Mr. F. seems to bo aware that, in order to i;ivo the public his views universal salvation, he has somo what imposed on our magnanimity, for ho says: "Hereafter I shall confino mvself moro to Spiritualism proper." We hope he will come fully up to this promise. If ho do not, we shall bo compelled io lay his fu ture lucubrations on tho table. Contributions for tue South.
