The State WomR SnfTmge Association met at the Conrt House tn this city on Tuesday, President, Mrs. Laughary, In the Chair. - Mrs. F. F. Victor, Secretary, being ab sent. Mrs. Van B. Delashmutt. of Port land, was appointed Secretary pro tern. . Minutes of last meeting read and ap proved. On motion, tho President appointed the following Committees ; On programme Mesdaroes Martin and Fiske and Jacob Conser. Kesolutions Mesdames Thompson, Mar tin and Miss Olds. - Finance Mr. D. D. Gray, Mesdames Crawford and Johns. Music Miss Reed. By rectiest, Mrs. Thompson read the Constitution and circulated it tor signa tures. Several persons coming In after ward, she read it a second time. A correspondence from the Treasurer of the Illinois Woman' State Association was read by Miss Olds and . followed by some remarks. A communication also from F. A. McCown. of Oregon City, was read. After-some discussion, Mrs. Martin' read the report of the Committee on Pro gramme, which was adopted. EVENING SESSION. Association met at 7 o'clock, Mrs. Laugh ary in the Chair. After music, minutes of tlie previous meeting were read and approved. ' Constitution was then read by Mrs. Dr. M. A. Thompson. The reading was fol lowed by music. On motion, Mr. Tuscan was elected mes senger. Mrs. Dr. Thompson offered the report of the Committee on Kesolutions, and the dis cussion proceeded on the question : Eesolted. That intemperance can onlvbe overcome by Woman having equal political i rights with her brother Man: Mrs. Laughary opened the discussion, i followed by Mrs. Dr. Thompson and sev- ' eral others, alter which Mrs. Dr. Thomp son read the following : Resolved, That justice demands for woman equal protection with respect to property anu uie enstouy ot children. After a thorough discussion in which a number engaged, on motion, the resolution was adopted. The Association then adjourned to meet at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning. WEDNESDAY MORNING. Association met pursuant to adjourn ment. Minutes read and approved. Committee on Programme offered the following : W hat can we do to further the cause of woman sun rage? This question wa3 taken tip and discussed at lt-ngth. Mrs. Dr. Thompson then read the Phila delphia bill of attainder. Mrs. Martin offered a resolution regard ing an organizing officer, Which was laid on the table. The President announced that the an nual election of officers will take place this ! afternoon. Adjourned to meet at 2 o'clock P. M. '' EVENING SESSION. The Association commenced a"7 o'clock. President in the chair. The music by Miss Piper and Mrs. Miller, was most excellent. After the reading ot some spicy corres pondence by the Corresponding Secretary, Mrs. Dr. Thompson was introduced, who delivered a very interesting address of thir ty minutes duration, denning the qualifi cations for voters demanded by the woman suffragists. Mrs. Van B. DeLashmutt was then in troduced, who insisted, among other things, that there should be a property qualification governing the franchise that each and every voter should be possessed. In his or her own right, of $500 before be ing allowed to vote. Mrs. Johns objected to any property qualification. . Dr. Lister followed in a few well chosen remarks, attacking one of the positions taken by Mrs. Thompson. 5f rs. T. again canw forward and replied to Dr. Lister,, stating more folly her poet- tiotK ; -- "Dr. L. replied that he was not opposed to woman franchise-; not t all ; lie was In favor of woman enjoying ' every privilege but one that of being the -father of the family." Dr. L. only had serfou objec tion to the plank that- prohibits foreigners exercising the franchise until they have resided in the United States ten years. Mr. L. Elklns also took an active part in the talking, asking numerous questions of Mr. Dr. Thompson and Jacob Conser. About this time in the evening (9 o'clock) the fun grew fast and turlous.. Two or more would rise at the same time and ad dress the chair. Tho President announced that it was growing late, and as the meet ing would necessarily be compelled to ad journ soon, speakers would be allowed one mlr.ute In which to air their eloquence. Under this rule Messrs. Pearce. Consor, Elklns, Buff, Miller. Gray and others made remarks.
