A train in India recently encoun

elephant, a large tusker, was apparent

charged the advancing train. There
was a trcmenduous concussion, the ele

after a series of violent jolts, which
nearly threw it oT the line, came to a

VERY CLOSE.
The dispatches so far received indi
cate a very close vote. Had there been
no reign of terror, inaugurated and car
ried to the bitter end by Democrats, in
the South, we should now be rejoicing
in the election of Hayes and Whee'er
by an overwhelming vote ; but even as
it now stands, we have strong hoes
that the Republican ticket is victorious.
Last night the telegraph told us tha'
Florida had gone Republican by 1.S00
and that the Democrats, aware of tht
fact, were trying to ditch trains so tha'
they might secure and destroy the eh c
tion returns. Telegtams further state

was thought the "Governor' would hat
