Messrs. John H. Burkhart and J. G. Ev ans, the latter business man ot the Demo- . erat, on Tuesday were arrested charged with taking a large sum ot money from the fire proof vault in the County Clerk's office at - the Court House, some weeks ago, a full 'account of which was given in the Regis ter at the time. Wells closed one of the largest and most success ful writing schools ever held in this city, with a class numbering over'fitty scholars, last evening. Prizes were awarded as of fered. At the request of scholars, the Pro fessor will commence another class this (Friday) evening, lowering his price from $3 to 2 the term, in expectation of a very lare class. Asa teacher of penmanship Piol. Wells stands at the head of the pro fession on this "coast, giving such general satisfaction that the better he is known the larger his classes. A BjiF.AK Out. The great pressure of grain in the oldest of the two warehouses owned by the Farmers' Co., of this city, caused the sills to give way in one corner ot the building some, time Saturday or Sun day night, and for a time it was a case of klonas whether the whole building would not collapse and spill 80,000 or more bush els of wheat out in the rain. However,' through the energetic exertions of the Su perintendent, several tons of wheat were at once removed from the overloaded build ing, and the danger was averted. The heavy rains ot the past two weeks unprecedented in volume at this season of the yeai caused the Call pooia to get way up, the first of the present week the water running over' the mill-dam clear, making scarcely a rifiie. The high stage of water compelled the shutting down of the Magnolia Mills until Wednesday night, when, the rain having ceased, the waters fell, and the mill was enabled to commence operations once more. Tlie The Willamette also increased its volume, probably eight or ten feet, enabling steam boats to come and go, loaded to the guards. The probability now is, there will be water enough tor all the purposes of navigation in the Willamette until spring. Good Teacher. Our public schools are giving better satisfaction now than ever before. In Mr. Royse our people have one Of the test educators in the State. He keeps the best of order during school hours. the scholars like him, and yet be has never had a "switch" or "strap" or "rule" in tlie sciiooJ-room, or been called upon to use anything of the kind to enforce obedi ence to any of his rules for governing tlie school. Does not this alone speak volumes in his favor? Such teachers are a rarity and when a community has been sotortun ate as to obtain such an one, that cominu nity should give him the fullest and heart iest support. A Success. The course of lectures being delivered at the M. E. Church upon Phre nology and the Human System, by Dr. Rice and Prof. McDonald, are well patron ized by our citizens. Phrenology and Health Laws will be treated to-night. To morrow evening Courtship and Marriage will be discussed. . No one should miss it. Those who wish to know themselves phre nological ly should' call at once upon Prof. McDonald., Dr. ,Rice , gives special atten tion to the treatment of chronic, obstinate and critical diseases that afflict both sexes his consultations tire free, at the St. Charles Hotel. . . v.. 5 J :i ' -.i i Tho sills of the Farmers' Warehouse did not split, as at first reported, we are in formed by Superintendent Simpson, but the building had canted and seemed to be sliding from its foundation, caused by the foundation sinking at one corner some inches. As soon as a sufficient amount of grain bad been removed all danger was obviated and although the whole building .'leans towards Jone's," three to five hun dred dollars will set things to rights once more. Not a timber was broken or even cracked in thewhole building, Mr. Simp son informs us, and no wheat was lost or damaged. Fcxeeai The funeral services of the late L. C. Burkhart, one of our oldest and most respected citizens, died at his residence, less than a mile east of this city, on Wednesday evening. Deceased L leaves a wife and six children and hosts ot friends to mourn his loss. He leaves large: property, accumulated by years of toil and honest industry. We this week commence issuing invita tion cards to those of our friends who are in arrears on subscription, etc. We are compelled to collect what is due us, or sus pend and let the Sheriff do it for us. This is the reason why we send out invitations to all who owe us to pay up. Fbctt. Railroad to Portr land are now $3 per ton fifteen cents per 100 pounds or f30 per car load. Quite a reduction this in favor of the farmers from former rates. - It is claimed that the full returns from this county give Lane 237 majority. The Democratic majority in the State is figured at 300, with three counties to hear from, which may cut this down considerably, r SCAitCE.
