It may be a matter of interest to the gen eral reader to be informed that while we of the north Pacific are "hard up" for com, the people of the Atlantic States are in possession of more than tlie usun amount of the "circulating medium." Ijite advices from New York, for instance, uitortn us that the banks or that city re port about one bundled millions of dollars reserve, or about double the amount the law requires. The current rate ot interest here is twelve per cent, per anuum, and little or no money to be obtained at cur- it-lit rates or any other, while in New York two and three per cent, per annum obtains. That is, if you have good "collaterals, such' as U. S. boud3 or first class railway or otlier securities, you can get money on the above low rates. Perhaps from seven to ten per cent., for the general borrower. would be nearer the mark; but no matter what the figures, the money is in the banks and can be obtained, and that is the main feature. There is more money than can find employment, therefore the low rates The recent sudden advance in the price of wheat in Liverpool, Induced Immense shipments ot the cereal to that point, and tor some time past, from almost every quarter of the globe, wheat has been pour ing In, Inducing a great decline iii pi ice J It is believed thai A3 soon as this rush Is over and the wlieat thus received placed, a demand based upon a crop in Europe much below average, will again bring prices up and our farmers may still hope to receive $1 per bushel for their wheat. But the prices paid for wheat here will depend in a large measure upon the amount and char acter of the tonnage seeking cargoes here, It Is asserted that for the present at least there Is a scarcity of vessels, even at San Francisco, suitable for the trade, and un less shipping of the right kind can be se cured, wheat dealers will not purchase very freely even at low figures. Our hope for obtaining (1 per bushel for wheat here, then, lies in there being sufficient tonnage offered to carry it to Europe. At Portland $1 65 per cental seems to be the outside figure offering for shipping, and only those who are absolutely forced to ob tain money are selling at that fligure. The latest quotations from San Francis co give S2 per cental for choice wheat, Oats, $1 6031 90. Wheat is nominally 75c per bushel in this market, but there is no coin to buy with at any price. ' Our warehouses are pretty well filled with grain, now, with a prospect that more room will be asked for tlian can bo sup plied. The general markets are fairly supplied with produce at fair rates. It is a custom of some lawvers who practise In the Police Court to badger witnesses who are opposed to them, and to ask them if they liave ever been in Court before, with a view of casting a slur on them in case they should answer that they had appeared in the character of defendants. "Sir," asked an attorney yesterday of a witness who was testifying in a case of assault and battery, have you ever been In this Court before? "Yes, sir," replied tlie witness, "I have been here often." "Ah, been here often, have you?" said the attorney in a triumphant tone. "Now, tell the Court what for." "WelL" replied the witness, slowly, "I have been here at least a dozen times to see you to try and collect that tailor's bill you owe." - A smile was noticed on the faces of all persons In the Court-room, except that ot the attorney who bad asked the question. Tlie cross-examination was brought to a close with tills answer The Navaios have a legend as to tlie procuring of fire. They tell how, when they first gained the earth, they were with out fire, and how the Coyote, the Bat and the Squirrel agreed to procure it for them. The object of their desire seems to have been in the possession of the animals in general, in some distant locality. The Coyote, having attached pine splinters to his tail, ran quickly through tlie fire and fled with his lighted prize. Being keenly pursued, however, by the other animals, he soon tired; upon which the Bat relieved him, and dodging and flitting here and there, carried the splinters still farther. Then the Squirrel came to the assistance of the Bat, and succeeding Mm in bis office, contrived to reach the hearths of the Nava jos with the coveted embers. iiancrofc Na tive Baees. Hew To-Day.
