Airnlfti liny for SHirti Cows. We are we'l fatisfied tliat lor milch niws alfalfa hay m more val uable than any other. It will .uake more milk, and ot a better quality, than si v other kind of hay. In fact, we believe and our belief is founded upon actual experienct in fecdiufr that cows will give more milk and make more butter or cheese when kept in the stable and fed on good al'al'a hay alone, than they will when running in the pas ture and feeding on a plenty of good native grass. We have fed cows on oat hay and given them a good slop twice a day, and we are wire that wiih this feed they will not thrive as well or give as much milk as when fed on alfalfa hay and no bran at all. The alfalfa, how ever, to secure these good qualities must be cut before in blossom, and must he cured without exposure to the sun, so that all the nutriment will be retained in the stem and all the leaves be retained. It not cut until too ripe, and then dried in the nun, it becomes ot but little more value as hay for any use than so much willow brush. The cheap rate of living in Eu rope, as compared with our fashion able watering place scale of prices, is having its effect to send sn unit ftially largo number of summer tourists across the water. Added to this incentive is the 1-iw rate charged by the steamboat lines, the effect of competition. Steerage passage is exceedingly cheap, and it is said that it will fall to $10 be tore the end of the season. Saloon passage is extremely low, some lines carrying passengers for $50. The Philadelphia company is taking passengers at the lowest New York quotations, and in addition to this pay the traveler's railway fare from their homes to the city they sail from. At this rate a person can go abroad, spend six weeks in the old CQAl orn ntry, and return at an expense not more than $250. While Prof. Watson has been fooling away fifteen years ot his life in the study of astronomy, a very common fellow in Delaware has discovered that a turnip tied to a string and hung to a hook will pre vent rheumatism from entering the house. If a bird in hand is worth two in the bush, it is no less true that a thorn in the bush is worth two in the hand. The table ot Sewing Machine Sales for 1873 shows that our sales last year am ounted to 233,111 (two hundred and thirty two thousand, four hundred and forty-four) Machines, being a large in crease over the sales of the previous year (1872.) The table also shows that our sales E ceeal those l mii.v other Company, for the period named, bv the mimberof 118, 1154 Machines, or nearly double those of any other Company. It may be further stated that the sales of 1873, as compared with those of 1872. show a relatively larger Increase, beyond the sales of other makers, than of any other vear. For Instance in 1872 we sold 15.000 more Machines than any otlicrContpany, where as, In I8f3, tiie sinus were 113,20-1 nnrnineN in urr oi oar Highest Competitor. Those flvnres are nil the more remark able, for the icason that the sales of the nrlneiiinl Coinmihlcs ill 1873 are leas than their sales in 172; whereas, as has been shown, our sales have largely Increased. The account of sales is from tunrn mum made to the owners of the Sewing Machine Patents. It will hardlv be denied, that the superi ority of the SINGER MACHINES is fully dcinonstratod- at all events that their pomilarity In the household is unques tionable.
