The work on the Da les ai.d Sandy wagon road at the ( Wades progresses finely. Tlie vegetable garden at the Pen itentiary near Salem is said to be the best in the State K. N. Thomas is building a large addition to his main warehouse near tlio depot in .lefterson. A new bridge across the Santiam, three miles above Jefferson, near (iray's lerry, is talked of. J. Stitzel and family left Walla Walla tor Colville on Wednesday of last week. Mr. Vile, of Ilillsboro, has in vented a new washing machine which bids fair to beat anything of the kind yet invented. The Democratic Territorial Cen tral Committee of Idaho have called meeting to lie Iteld at Uoise City on the 29th day of this mouth. It is thought by the Commission ers of Ada county, I. T., that they can run the county with 812,000 loss than has ordinarly been used. Gov. Grover has refused to grant an application tor the pardon of Frank Starr, sent to the penitentiary from Yamhill comity tor larceny. Henry P. Ankeny, the largest cheese maker in Marion county, aid Oregon, is now mi king 135 cows and making 200 pounds of cheese daily. - Father L. I?. Demern, the pas tor of St. Peter's Church, in the Dalles, will open a select school tor boys on the 1st of September next. Raker City wants to be clothed with corporate powers, which means to have a Mayor, Common Council, Police Court, pay big taxes, etc. The Chemeketa Hotel at Salem, is hereafter to be in charge of Thos. Smith, who is well known as here tofore proprietor of the 'Empire," at the Dalles. The Schooner Louisa Morrison nailed from Shoalwater Bay on the 15th inst. tor San Francisco, with a cargo ot 5,000 baskets of oys ters. Mr. A. L. Stinson informs the Record that a good deal of wheat is coming into Jefferson for ship, meut. The Academy of Mary Immacu late, at Dalles City, will commence the first term of the scholastic year on August 24th. David Wall and Wm. Hickey engaged in a drunken row near Lafayette on Friday night, of last week, in which Wall was badly stabbed. The Salt Lake Tribune says: "The police received $1,147 last month. This is $143 apiece to men who do more to irtinple upon the Jaws than they do to preserve the jwace of the city. In the vicinity ot Dayton, W. T., the farmers are busy threshing their grain crops. The yield of Wheat will not, from present indcations, be much more than one-half of the usual crop. A letter to the fyirit from Waits, burg, W. T., says: Farmers jfan erally in this vicinity are very busily engaged with their harvest, grops are light, bat enough trijl be rained to supply the borne demand 1 or more. '' The telegraph line from Winne m ticca to Silver City was within twenty miles of the latter place on the 8th and is probably complete by this time. A silver City man complains that his wife is an inflationist. She blows him up every day, and makes him circulate until he actually feels he is beyond redemption. We learn that harvesting is about over with in Wasco county. The crops are not quite as good as last year, yet they are a fair average. FINANCE AND COMMERCE.
