Dead. C. C. Crowe, whose appoint
. inent as Secretary of Utah , was confirmed
on the17th inst., is reported as having
died at his home in Alabama.
Complexion or -the Legislature.
The election returns as now fixed up
give the Democracy a majority in the
next Legislature of thirteen on joint bal
lot four in the Senate and nine iu the
House. The Republicans have nine
members in the Senate, viz : one from
Multnomah, one from Clackamas, one
from Washington, one fiom Yamhill, two
from Marion, one from Benton, and two
from Douglas, Coos and Curry. In the
House they have nineteen Representa
tives one from Clatsop and Columbia,
four from Multnomah, three from Clack
amas, two from Yamhill, five from Marl
on and two from Benton, making twenty
eiirlit on joint ballot. To meet this the
Democracy have forty-one on joint ballot

driven off. One train was corralled two
days at Gypsum Creek, fighting Indians.
It is no longer safe for trains to travel
without a strong escort in that country.
Isn't it about time another treaty was made
with these noble red men, as they may
soon run out of powder ! They should
be presented with a new supply .of powder
and ball, a few boxes of Henry rifles, re
volvers, knives and blankets, that they
may be able to cope successfully with the
bloodthirsty white men, who are robbing
them of their homes. Let us have a
peace commission, provided with canned
fruits, straw hats, revolvers, tracts, tobac
co, "powder, paper collars, rifles, pipes,
knives, sidesaddles, hoopskirts, leg horn
bonnets, etc., to the end that these muoh
abused and long suffering people may be
induced to delay the punishment, so
richly deserved, of these murderous and
cruel whites, who have destroyed such
quantities of sage brush, and murdered" a
few jackass rabbits, while traveling
through a portion of their country ! They
might be induced to forego their ven
geance, at least until after the gifts were
distributed by the commission, which
might have a salutary effaotou the bloody
white men ! .
Teeth Set. with Diamonds. To
what extremes" and follies the god of
fashion can lead its devotees is shown by

Killed. Mr. R. L. Lewis, an esti
mable citizen of Douglas county, was
thrown from his horse on the 10th inst,
about seven miles south of Canyon villa,
and so badly bruised that death ensued
in about thirty hours thereafter. He
leaves a wife and family.
Governor Musgrave, of British Colum
bia, married Miss Kate Field, daughter
of David Dudley Field," of New York, on
the 20th instant.
A bill passed the House, of Represen
tatives recently confirming the tide to two
islands in the Pacific ocean to a Mrs.
Parker, whose deceased husband discov
ered them. -
Escaped. On Friday morning ot last
week, a convict named Patrick Brawn
escaped from' the Salem penitentiary.
His sentence was for life, lie walked off
with a 13-pound shackle. Major Berry
offers 8400 reward for his capture.
Hot. In New York city on tho 19th,
the thermometer stood at 118 in tWb
sun. The street cars were almost stop
ped, owing to the terrible effects of the
heat upon both men and horses. A great
number of sunstrokes were reported.
Women Votes. The Olympia Tran
script says that eight women voted at
Miami precinct, and seven at Grand
.Mound. Three women offered their bal
. lots at Olympia precinct, but the judges
refused them. Those judges need never
expect to be shown any favors in the new
era that is now dawning for lovely
woman.
A band of eighteen Indians known as
'Sheep-eaters," consisting of thirteen
bucks and five squaws, were recently
carried over the great falls in the Yellow
stone river and dashed to pieces. : . They
weTe on a hastily constructed raft, fleeing
from a party of white men whom they
had robbed "a few hours before.

city election on last Monday passed off
quietly. The Democrats succeeded iu
electing one Councilman. The City
Council stands seven Republicans to two
Democrats. .
After reading the speech ot Red Claud,
says the Marysville Appeal, we have
hopes of the speedy civilization of tho
savages. Besides the poetic figures of
speech in which he indulges, the fact
that he hastened in his first sentence
to make use of an idiom that must have
been borrowed from the white man, would
tend to ehow his appreciation of the re
finements of civilization. When told
that the Great father had beed kind to
his people his reply was "I cant see it.

their Chief with anxious solicitation as to
how his mecrshsum colors."
New York Sun of Mav 20th
A brilliant fashion which has just been
invented in this progressive city bids fair
to outshine Paris in its lustre and ex
travagance. Recently an up-town gentle
man of wealth and fashion conceived the
dazzling idea of having his fro ut teeth
set with diamonds. He conferred on the
subject with two of his fiiends, one .of
whom is a lady of literary celebrity, and
all were so welt pleased with the sparkling
novelty that they had large and valuable
first-water diamonds . set in their front
teeth, and on Sunday afternoon they
attended one of our most- fashionable
churches on Fifth 'Avenue, attracting
considerable attention, and diverting the
attention of a large number of the con
gregation from their devotion, by the
lustrous rays of their teeth. -, On their
return home ; they were followed by a
multitude, whose curiosity had been ex
cited by the dazzling radiance of the
brilliant circle. Should this fashion be
adopted, jewelers, lapidaries and dentists
will reap a rich harvest, and will tend to
promoto good nature and cleanliness, as
the queens of fashion, especially those
who are thus fixed, will be continually
brushing their teeth and smiling, if for
no other purpose than to show their dia
monds. Ob ! xe gods and little fishes,
will it not be a cure for sore eyes and
empty pockets to su, in front of such an
audience in a church, theater, or opera.

The Nebraska City Chronicle, of May 26,
says: A man by the name ot was

An American traveler in Italy has
dumfounded the Government by seriously
proposing to lease Mount Vesuvius. He
eays ha will make roads and lay out
pleasure grounds upon its rocky sides,
build hotels, aud set up soda fountains off
its summit, and help visitors up and down
by machinery. To pay him for all this
outlay, and amass a fortune besides, he
will charge s small admission fee from

the erand pow-wow at Washington as
one of the broadest farces of the day
Red Cloud, it says, is an Ogalallah Chief
who possesses but little influence with
the band he represents, bpotted Xau
is a mule chiei and a man ot more than
ordinary influence with his band ; but it
is a great mistake to suppose that either
or both of these men can commit their
bands to any definite course of action
The Sioux care very little for their chiefs
it is the "soldier's lodge?' composed of
the young men of the different bands
whica decides all questions ot peace or
war. .Red Cloud can no more speak
for the Ofralallah Sioux, than for the
Cheyennes or Arapahoes. If what he
promises meets favor in the soldiers'
lodge, when he returns to his band all
right if not it will amount to simply
nothing at nil. Spotted Tail is much
more influential with the Brules, for the
reason that he is an able man, boasts
six wives, and all the relatives of his
wives are warmly attached to bim ; but
after all. if the soldiers' lodge resolves
upon war, that is the end ot it.
