FRO OUR REGULAR CORRESPONDENT. Brownsville," Jan: 25, 1870. The rains have descended in torrents recently, so that our southern mail has failed to connect for the last ten days. Mr. George Kirk, the mail carrier, has been out ten days over time. Up to this writing his friends have not heard from him. 1 Since writing to you last week, we have been called upon to commit to its last resting place the mortal remains of Mrs. Hausman. wife of A. .C. Hausman, of this place. 1 She was a lovely and estima ble lady, in the very prime of woman hood. " So in the very midst of the busy scenes of life, we are often very near the gates of death. She leaves four little eirls. husband and numerous relatives and friends to mourn her loss. A petition forwarded to this office by the Department, is being numerously signed without regard to party politics. We have the first man to see who is un friendly to the proposed legislation the repeal of the franking privilege. Mr. Charles Bury was arrested and fined, lately, fcr running his doggery on Sunday.- Or in other words (for fear the high moral and refined sensibilities of some gentleman may' be wounded by the above notice), we would say that the gen tlemanly saloon keeper over the way was taken before his honor. The Willamette has been running "level iull" at this point during the past week, owing to the almost continuous rain-fall of the past two weeks. Navigation is therefore un obstructed, and our warehouses are being rapidly depleted of their stores of grain. And the rain prospect is still good. Bad Boys. -.We have a few bad boys in our city, who gather on the street corners at night, and annoy passers-by and residents is the vicinity by rude re marks, yelling, and throwing missiles. A few arrests, accompanied by fines, might administer a lesson that would net be lost on them, but eventuate in their ul timate good. Fined. A few days since a. letter was received from the agent of the Magnolia Mills at San Fran cisco, containing the information that California had been recently visited with a bountiful rain-fall, and that the danger of short . crops there next season was. therefore, passed, la consequence of this" news, wheat jhas declined, and -is now quoted at 5055e bushel. St. .Charles IIotki. The new hotel building on the corner of First and Washington streets, recently erected by our eoterprisiLg townsmen, Messrs. Houclt & Myer, as will be seen by card in to-day's issue, is now, under the charge of Mr. II. Brenner, open for the reception of guests. The hotel is a two story frame structure, neatly finished inside and oat, and hat been fitted up with entire new furniture, carpets, etc. The beds are all furnished with spring bottoms, and every room in the house. with probably the exception of the kitchen, is carpeted. The appointments and conveniences of the St. Charles are most thorough and complete, equal if not superior to hotels of much moro pre tentions. - The reputation which Mr. . Brenner enjoys as a landlord, will prove itself in the management of onr new hotel, and the St. Charles will soon have a reputation throughout the State as a erst class house. - M'COHMIOK'S 11 A Jl XI O T II STOCK OF TOTS, FANCY GOODS, YANKEE NOTIONS, GIFTS.
