Be Prepared When War Chest Workers Ask for Donations McKINNEY & McKTNNr.' Publishers The O regon W ar ( best drive, a p art of the N a tional W ar Fund, is one of the sm artest moves to come out of this w ar. T hrough this p ro g ram rep e a te d e f f o r t' to raise money for the m any w orthy ch a ritie s in con nection with the w ar are co n so lid ated — it saves the tim e of volunteer solicitors and of those who a re asked to give. People should he p re p a re d to m ake th eir donations to cover all w hen the solicitors call so th a t it will not he necessary for these volunteer w orkers to m ake re peat calls to those who have fo rg o tte n about the drive. M ake it a pleasant, courteous business deal, for it is a definite responsibility of every individual to do his share. < ontrib u to rs are assured u n d e r this n a tio n a lly -a p proved w ar chest program th a t th e ir money is going into w orthw hile channels and th at it is going w here it is needed most. A fter c arefu l study the quota was m ade up to correspond to the dem ands of each of the 17 approved organizations in the N ational W ar Fund and the eight state-w ide child carin g agencies. In a d dition th ree ch a ra c te r-b u ild in g o rg an izatio n s for the youth of W ashington county— Roy Scouts, ('am p Fire Girls and Girl Scouts— are also included. The various agencies approved in this cam paign are w orthy of the w h o leh earted co-operation of every individual in W ashington county and th a t should be forthcom ing if the county is to meet its quota of $30 - 500. This county has consistently met obligations in the w ar program and this will be no exception. President Roosevelt in a recent broadcast urging su p p o rt of the drive said in p a rt: "I ask you to rem em ber th a t the USO is y o u r share of w hat we are doing for our cw n fighting m en. and the forces behind the lines I ask you to consider that W ar P risoners' Aid does w hat no g o v ern m ent can do I ask you to th in k of the U nited Seam en's Service in term s of the people's debt to the men who took cu r ships across ia the darkest hours of the war. “And I ask you not to forget that the people of Russia and China, end of all the oth er U nited Nation»—and especially the u n fo rtu n ate hungry men. women and children of all the o v erru n and enslaved countries—see in your personal and frien d ly concern the b rig h test ray of hope and th e greatest pow er for good in the w orld today— the sovereign voice of the people of th e U nited States “Living on the Home Front" Last week m arked th e celeb ratio n of N ational Business W om en’s W eek by 73.000 m em bers of t h e Business and Professional W om en's clubs in every state in the union, A laska and H aw aii, the first observance of the week being in 1928. The w eek has been h e ra ld ed by the chief executive of th e U nited States, by gover nors and m ayors as a national institution. It has been celeb rated by the local club since th e y e a r in which the club was organized as one of the o u tsta n d in g events of the y ear. Down th ro u g h th e y ears th e focus has changed as the w orld has ch an g ed . This y e a r ’s p rob lems are so confusing, so com plex th a t only tra in ed m inds and far-sig h ted o rderly p ro ced u re can solve them . “ Living on th e Home F ro n t,” this y e a r's them e, is tak in g care of the people a t hom e as th e boys in th e service w ould like to have them cared for, and to aid in every w ay possible to bring th e end of th e w ar closer and to bring a lastin g peace to th e w orld. To th is end Business and Professional W om en a re d e d ic a tin g th e m selves. An Unhealthy Picture T hat m any A m erican citizens are sh irk in g th e ir duties in the w ar effo rt is in d icated by a recen t survey by Dr. G eorge G allup. This survey reveals th a t about 1 3 G, million fam ilies own no w ar bonds or stam ps. P e r centages of non-bond buying according to sections w ere revealed as follow s: M ountain states and Pacific coast, 1 5 . : New E ngland and M id-A tlantic, 1 2 '. : E ast Cen tral. 1 5 '. ; W est C entral 1 8 '. , and South. 3 2 '. . The su r’ ey also show ed th a t th e g re a te r n u m b er of non bond buyers are in th e low er incom e and edu catio n al brackets. Every fam ily an d individual should c arry th eir p ro p o rtio n ate sh are of th e w ar's cost and some m eans should be found to ch an g e this very u n h ealth y picture. A move to “ d r a f t” Eric Jo h n sto n of Spokane, VV ash., president of th e L’nited S tates ch a m b e r of com m erce, as a c a n d id a te for th e rep u b lican p residential nom ination is rep o rted from C hicago. Jo h n sto n is one of the o u tsta n d in g m en in th e country to d ay and his views on national and in te rn atio n a l a ffa irs have been w idely p rinted and quoted. F u rth e rm o re , th e re is a lot of logic and good comm on horse sense in w h at he has to say. He would have a lot of p o p u lar a p p e al with th e rank and file of th e voters, m uch more so th an most of those m entioned so fa r. In sp ite of his post as p resi d en t of th e U. S. ch am b er of com m erce he is very lib eral, believes firm ly in th e sp irit of A m erica and free enterprise.
