The assistant prosecutor quoted figures to show that there was a de crease of drunkenness in the United States five years after the enact ment of the Volstead act. He said that while the decrease in the United States had reached 50 per cent, it had increased by 65 per cent in England. He pointed out figures to prove that the number of jail inmates had decreased, that the number of in sane people was lessened, that there are less deaths from alcoholism, and that poverty hasn't the hold on the country that it had during the days of John Barleycorn's greatest popu larity. Mr, Patterson argued against the idea of light wines and beers on the ground that it had laen tried years ago and found wanting. He said that the plan of government control in Canada is not proving all that it should be. All of these things he contends should be considered before con demning the Volstead act. R. Frank Peters was luncheon chairman.
