Grains and grasses are now 19 Local Batters Hillsboro Monday PETITIONS PRESENTED Property Owners In Section* 35 and 36 Present Ob jections To Petition* The first formal step to bring about the long sought tunnel thru the mountain to Portland was tak>n Monday morning when the petitions for the formation of Tunnel Dis trict No. 1 were presented to the county court. A caravan of 84 au- tumobiles, headed by several traf fic officer* on motorcycle* and siren* telling the world they were, ar rived at 10 o'clock and proceeded directly to the circuit court room in the court house. Joseph Presents Petitions The presentation of the petition* was made by State Senator George Joeeph, who said It waa the first step In the great project to Join Portland with the beautiful Tualatin valley. He said that after the dis trict i* created and before the people vote on the project they will be advised fully as to what it will cost each Individual. The talk of a tunnel started as long ago as 25 years. The petition, signed by 400 prop erty owner* In the proposed dis trict. waa presented to Clerk Ed. C. Lure by Senator Joseph, together with a bond for 84000 guaranteeing the county immunity from election expense. Objections Made Thomas H. Tongue appeared as attorney for 15 objector* to the petition. All the objsetors live in »ectlona 36 and 36, township 1 north and 2 west. The petitioner* agreed to leave these section* out of the district and the court accepted the petition with this understanding. County Judge E. J. Ward pre sided and Commissioners Frank W. Livermore and J. M. Hiatt sat in court with him during the proceed ing*. The law give* Judge Ward 90 day* In which to set a date for an election, but the date will probably be announced this week. The right to vote in the proposed election la limited to holder* of title to at least 50x100 feet of ground with- ing the limits of the district. District Wealthy There are approximately 69,000 acre* of land in the Tualatin val ley portion of the tunnel district as outlined and the Portland sec tion embodies nearly all the West Side business district. The assessed valuation of the property in the dis trict la in excess of 1200,000,000. The cost of the tunnel is estima ted by engineers at around $3,000,- oo(£ and the promoters plan to fl. nance the project by sale of dis trict bond*. No site has been chos en for the tunnel. The tube will be a little in excess of one mile and will be 10 feet wide. Cyrus of 84 North 23rd Street, Portland, was drowned in Gale* Creek at Rippling Water* last Saturday morning. Cyrus I* said to have been unable to swim but dove off the diving board and failed to come up. Dr. Via was called on and worked on him for an hour, but in vain. Dr. Via say* he believes that the man died of heart failure, although there was a bruise on hi* fore head. The victim was in the water several minutes before the condi tion was realixed. Wells, manager and owner of the company. The new building will be on Washington street between Second and Third. Odie Wilmoth of Banks died at the Dr. Via hospital in Forest Grove about 7:30 last Friday morning of injuries received in an automobile accident at Greenville the Sunday before. Wilmoth’s skull was frac tured at the base and he never re gained consciousness. Ellis Edmundsen, with Wilmoth seated on the back of the motor cycle, was riding south from Banks, through Greenville when the car driven by Francis Herb, coming from the east struck them. Ed mundsen was thrown over the front of the machine and Wilmoth was tossed some distance to the side of the road, where he fell on a pile of boards.
