The gov eminent ban no alternative but to pay big wages to shipyard work ers, ammunition workers and oth er war activity laborers during the war period. This forced th employing people nil over th country to pay larger wages or KO laborlcss. War created th condition. Our bovs on land and sea enlisted to the government cause, worked for victory- and they should be paid accordingly They arc entitled to more than what thev have received. Th slacker at home profited by th condition, and labor everywhere protited by the same token. Give the boys a raise, and pay it to them in a lump sum - and do it right away, is the real essence of the situation that should be taken by a government that has any claim to responsiveness. The pending proposition of a dollar' and a half a dav for time served in addition to the measly pay giv en the bovs is the least that the government can, or should do. SCHOOL NEWS Leading business and neighbor hood organisations of Washington County go on record as favoring the two mill tax for elementary education. At the regular meeting of the Hillsboro Commercial Club Tues day evening;, March 80, the pro posed two mill tax for elementary education was discussed at some length. At the close of the dis eussion, a resolution favoring sup port of this measure was unani mously pased. Co. Supt. Frost addressed tin Sherwood Business Men's Asocia- tion at their regular Luncheon, March 21, on the subjects of the two mill tax and Union High School. At their following meet ing, March 31, a resolution was passed unanimously endorsing tin two mill tax. Several of the neighboring districts have become actively interested in the union high school and success of the en terprise seems asured. The Witch Hazel school held n program and basket social March 27. Co. Supt. Frost was present and explained the need and w ork ing of the two mill tax. A reso lution of the Parent-Teachers' Association endorsing the mens lire was introduced and passed unanimously. Gale Grange, at their regular meeting at Forest Grove, April 3 passed a resolution unanimously endorsing the bill for a two mill tax for elementary education. A copy of this bill with cxplan ations has been sent to all the 1 10 school boards. Out of 60 replies so far received, only two have been opposed to the bill. N. A. Frost, Supt. MRS. FRITZ GINDHART Mrs. Fritz Gindhart died at the family home near Buxton, March 29, 1020, survived by the husband and a son, aged three days. Her maiden nume was Fdsie Laura 1'aetsch, and she was born near liuxton, on the father's home stead, July 22, 189(i. The family moved from liuxton to Shady Brook later on, and on July I, 1919, she was married to Mr. Gindhart, at Lebanon, Oregon. After marriage she and her hus band lived near Buxton until death separated them. She was highly respected by all who knew her, being a lover of home lifer, a good neighbor, and ever ready to share the responsibilities of life both at home and in the commuri- ty. She was a life long member of the Lutheran Church. The fu neral took place from the home of Martin Gindhart, and notwith- tanding the inclement weather, was largely attended. Undertaker IL W. Prickett conducted the funeral. Besides the husband and son she is sur- i-ived by a father and mother, a brother, and two Misters.
