filled and some usually on the
waiting list.
This comes at a time when
(here is an unusual demand for a
higher grade of teaching in the
fundamentals and in citizenship
There is one cause for this m
only one, insufficient salaries for
teachers. In spite of the $73
minimum salary law passed last
year the advance was only about
1(1 per cent. Teachers are leaving
(he profession to start in new jobs
for which I hey are not especially
trained but at a higher salary. A
Normal trained teacher just re
signed a position in this county
years ago anil had only been
raised to $80. She started in at
100 in an office were it will take
some months training to learn the
! work and will then get more pay
if she is successful. A kitchen
girl in a lumber camp in Wash
ington County is getting more
pay than the teacher of the
school.
There is an even worse phase
of this question than the closing
of schools and that is the unrest,
dissatisfaction anil even resent
ment and bitterness in some cases,
among those who have become
tied lo teaching as a profession
and are not situated so they can
turn to anything else. This is no
time when we can trust the train-
mi of our children to teachers
who are in that frame of mind.
There is no greater emergency

the limit and still are too poor to
raise the salaries.

One. is n bill to levy a slate wide
tax of 'I mills which would raise
approximately 10 per capita for
the school children of the state
to be distributed in such a way "'
to relieve especially the small
weak districts. At present we on

capita from the stale.
The other bill is to remove the
(I per cent, limitation from apply-1
lug to educational appropriation.

the Legislature.

salary than the Superintendent.
Some of the county officers gel

and merely clerical positions get
as much.
Washington County is among
the wealthiest and most populous
counties in the state and rinks
about third in the amount of
county business. Our county of
ficials are among the poorest paid
as a whole.
The snlary item altogether is
an insignificant item in the coun
ty budget. The cost of raising
one county official's salary .f00

sessment of $1000 the price of
only one 10c cigar.
The state legislature sets the
salaries of the count v officials and
will do it if recommended by tin
ilelcialion from the countv con
cerned.
How will our Representatives
know how the people feel about
these things unless somebody
takes the trouble to express them
selves. What is everybody's bus
